In Defense of Opie.

He keeps the show moving, he is an on air executive producer. His job isn't to be smart, funny or at all informed. He is just there to keep the ball rolling, and collect fat paychecks. Opie is doing this job perfectly, its when he steps outside of his lane that he runs into trouble.
You've heard Jimmy gush about how fun it is to do radio with Ant. Opie could never compete with that, he doesn't have to. Opie IS the radioshow, and the more blank his slate is the better the show can be. Maybe we should stop picking on this aging bro, and let him settle down into his assigned role. Let him calm down and fade back into the background like wallpaper. Open up the mics in the morning with his cool guy, bassy, put on radio voice. If he plays a song and seems proud of himself we should play along and praise him. He really is doing his best.
Like a 4 year old with a shitty drawing, we should accept him for his level of ability. Be thankful that he is self conscious enough to realize, if not honest enough to admit, that the show needs two comedians at all times. He knows they had better get in a second one for Jimmy to banter with for the day.

I never understood this argument when listening to Ron and Fez. There was a long period of time on that show when Fez was much funnier, intentionally funnier, than Ron. But Ron was interesting and funny, too! Now, without Fez, Ron can still do a show and it is really good and Opie, well...
See, if the comedy part of the duo leaves and the person who never was funny deludes himself into thinking it "isn't my job to be funny" is all that is left, the show stinks. The focal point of the comedy program is now an entitled and untalented multimillionaire.

Jim will be the next casualty as management eradicates all that was O&A. He has already admitted they don't like him & never have.
Opie fell right into their divide & conquer strategy despite what he said in the past.
Now that the show is generic garbage,any host can be plugged into it. Perhaps a Todd Pettingale?
The O&A brand is what worked for Opie, The Opie Raqio brand is the Clear Pepsi/New Coke equivalent & we know what happened to those disasters.

Opie is the one that refuses to settle in to his assigned role. He is the one that believes instead of keeping the ball rolling he is suppose to be the comic relief and color commentator. I agree that some of the hate boarders on creepy stalker shit but most of it is well deserved.
