He was given that moniker by family and/or friends early in life. It's common for people to be given nicknames when people care about them.
What do you think? A 20-something year old picked it out as his edgy radio name because he thought it was clever? That would be absurd.

I think the character 'Opie' came from the Andy Griffith Show which first aired in 1960!
Our Opie has a resemblance to the kid Opie in that show (a young Ron Howard)
