Listen to The Bonfire. Just do it.

I know a lot of you guys are already well aware of how great this show is, but I also assume a lot of you are autistic and don't like change or trying new things.
After O&A collapsed, I tried really hard to find something to replace it. I tried Race Wars, The Anthony Cumia Show, Legion of Skanks, etc. None of them really captured the appeal of O&A to me. Then the other day I finally decided to check out the Bonfire, and holy fuck, it's like going back to the glory days of O&A, just without the radio bits or guest interviews. The chemistry and banter between Dan Soder and Jay Oakerson is fucking perfect.
If you're still just sitting around listening to O&J or TACS, not out of any real enjoyment, but simply because you aren't ready to move on yet, stop being a faggot and give The Bonfire a listen. It's the closest thing you're going to get for the time being, and judging by the buzz it's been getting in some surprisingly mainstream outlets, it's probably going places. Unlike the b-b-b-boys. They're dead in the water and you know it, so move the fuck on.

Have you listened to it? It's amazing.
-2 majestik6 2015-09-05
It's not "amazing", it's about as good as the average podcast. It doesn't suck, but it's not "amazing."

Sorry....didn't realize there was a post limit on this sub. Wouldn't want to take up all the internetz.

The only thing keeping it from being a total replacement for O&A is the twice-a-week schedule.
12 YourOldPalHoward 2015-09-05
And the barely two hour length. But the show is literally just getting started and is getting more buzz and hype from the media than O&A had gotten for over a decade. I really think this could be the beginning of something big, if Soder and Oakerson want to go "all in" with radio careers.
2 BigGreenYamo 2015-09-05
I'm all for /r/TheBonfire promotion, but O&A did Letterman and Leno promoting the show. Sure, it was 9 years ago, but it still happened.
3 K1bbler 2015-09-05
O&A on Letterman was not by their own merit. It was merely a contract demand (most likely by Opie) with CBS.
1 BigGreenYamo 2015-09-05
Didn't mean it didn't still happen
9 ShabazzJenkins 2015-09-05
If the SiriusXM execs were smart they'd be grooming Opie and Jim's replacements. Having these two guys who are somehow connected to the old regime will make it easier to let Opie and Jim go when their contract is up.

Dan Soder's got a big head. He's a sniper's dream.

The glory days of O&A weren't because of Opie and Anthony's chemistry, it was because of the comedians they got. I've heard Soder and Oakerson on the radio so many times, and on all kinds of different shows, they don't have the talent of Cumia, Norton, Bennington, Carolla, Burr, CK, Quinn, O'Neal, etc... They're easy to like, but they don't make you laugh much. It's the opposite of what O&A was about, which was abrasive personalities, that you wouldn't like unless they were funny.
11 gunzbrah 2015-09-05
Jay Oakerson 100% belongs with those names you listed. Without a doubt in my mind. His standup absolutely kills every time and 75% of it is crowd work you don't do that by 'not having talent' or 'don't make you laugh much'
But I do agree in that a replacement O&A is a comedy hangout not two comedians on mic. Because honestly both Soder and Jay's career is on the upswing and they won't commit to a radio job like this imo. Ideally O&A still exists and guys like Jay, Soder, Metzger, and other comics are the regulars on O&A

What made it unlike anything else for me was the old Jim Norton's spin on things. He had this weird way of telling a joke or making a rant in a way that I've never really seen anywhere else. Jimmy's Ocean/fish rant can still put me in stitches and who else would have asked Sam about what would happen if someone was caught molesting a child during his wedding?
7 whatisthishere 2015-09-05
You actually nailed it there, but I don't know how to explain that ability. I can't really think of anyone besides Ron Bennington, Jimmy, and Ant who have that skill. When Fez is crying about his dad dying a year ago, and Ron makes it about his umbrella being stollen by Fez's mom. When Jimmy, Opie, and Patrice are talking about Jesus being a real guy, and Ant says he is as real as Popeye, and just breaks into an impression including, "Popeye the savior man." For example...
4 RedOak_Candor 2015-09-05
As much as anyone can criticize Jimmy's reliance on characters, they are brilliant. Who else can play a believable pedophile, a retarded anti-humor dimwit, an overenthusiastic emporium salesman, and a thin lipped aPRRuL FAHlzeR perfectly. Jimmy trolled Celebrity Ghost Stories and made them make an episode about Edgar Mellencamp. This is beyond stories of fucking chicks and blowing trannies, it's the funniest troll a person could do.
5 whatisthishere 2015-09-05
Anyone criticizing his use of characters is an asshole. That Celebrity Ghost Stories bit should not just be known by O&A fans, but I guess you need to know the character to get it.
5 With_Clean_Hands 2015-09-05
Well we all know someone on the show who is more than capable of at least living their life as a retarted anti-humor dimwit.
That ghost stories bit had me rolling btw. I think the poor fuck that played Edgar is on IMDB's page for that episode or whatever. He never knew.
2 RedOak_Candor 2015-09-05
I...I...I'm dry...My mouth is dryyyyy...
2 YourOldPalHoward 2015-09-05
Yeah man, they're some of the funniest motherfuckers around. They just can't function individually— they need eachother. But I'm telling you, Soder and Oakerton riffing on Tom Hanks' son is the funniest radio I've heard since O&A died. It's the best we've got right now.
1 thermitepaaint 2015-09-05
holy shit dude, we get it, they are amazing.
-2 YourOldPalHoward 2015-09-05
Good points. I don't think anyone will disagree, there was a special sort of magic about O&A that we might never see again. But The Bonfire is still the closest thing to nailing the "O&A formula" I've heard so far, and I'm speaking to an audience of people who still spite-listen to O&J, which is fucking horrible. The Bonfire is the best option we have right now, and it's a pretty damn good knock-off
8 spicysandwich80 2015-09-05
The chemistry between Dan and Jay is great, they're just not that funny or offensive. Something is missing. Like Jim's intense self-loathing, or Ant's lightning fast insults. There's too much good-naturedness going on.
10 rottenseed 2015-09-05
Offensive for the sake of offensive can still be boring. I think they're edgy enough to not be considered morning zooish, but they're not seeking the shock jockery that's been out of style since 2000
5 Zenaesthetic 2015-09-05
It sounds to me like you just want them to copy everything O&A did.. Just because they aren't terrible people, like Opie, Ant, and Jim often were/are doesn't mean they can't be funny.
I appreciate how brutal O&A was but it doesn't mean Jay and Dan have to be the spiritual successor.
2 CUNTYMOM 2015-09-05
yeah cause OnA came into radio doing shock jock stuff their first time on air, it took them decades to get to where they wanted to be, the bonfire's first couple months is better than anything OnA did for years, they didnt get good until the end of NEW.

Totally agree. It still feels too morning zoo-ish. But yes it's a good show with a LOT of potential.
1 mattirawks 2015-09-05
It couldn't be any less morning zoo'ish
-2 NoCoJay 2015-09-05
This. Too much good naturedness is right. It's felt a little too, 'just happy to be here' to me. And Soder weirdly seems like he'd rather be doing something else, I think he's really distracted with his breakup and the weird energy with O n J. I'm a fag.
8 fervt 2015-09-05
Mention that they like wrestling next time, that should entice some of the stragglers.
7 phyrexianlovepump 2015-09-05
Does management love what they're doing?
15 Wsallgood 2015-09-05
They filled an entire boardroom with ad executives to meet, promote and make money off The Bonfire.
Management never gave a zero fuck about Opie, Anthony, or Jimmy.
6 blackirishlad 2015-09-05
they recognize the hot fire they're bringing.
2 netbent 2015-09-05
Chester.. quit spitting hot fire right now..
2 panjshirlion 2015-09-05
You have to drop all 40 bars right now. No spreading them out throughout the night. This is my dear friend Robin Williams's funeral service!
5 KennethFresno 2015-09-05
Listening to old O&A clips for the hundredth time is better. It's not a bad show but shut up, it's no where near prime O&A.
5 opieanthonyjim 2015-09-05
Cut the shit. I listen to the Bonfire and enjoy it but stop blowing it out of proportion. It has a fucking long way to go if it even wants to be near O&A. I like the Bonfire and it has potential but stop. Old O&A clips blow it out of the water.
6 rottenseed 2015-09-05
Yeah O&A clips. Meaning you pick and choose the best out of decades of material. The typical O&A show could have anything from zero to 4 hours of funny. A lot of the time there were lulls (not their fault, it's hard to be funny/interesting for that long).
The best O&As though were typically made better by the types of guests they had too. Just Opie in a room with Anthony? Shit. Add Jimmy? Better. Add Patrice, Burr, Louis, etc. and the show was usually great.
3 opieanthonyjim 2015-09-05
That's also being a bit unfair. Even when it was just opie and anthony the shows were good they had great chemistry always, even to the end.
2 CUNTYMOM 2015-09-05
rose colored glasses, besides the shows where something interesting would happen it was just filler and repeating bits over and over again. it was lazy and even OnA themselves admit that and wonder why everyone though the old stuff was so good.
it was just better than anything else on radio at the time because besides howard it was the best shock jock stuff around.
4 SpaceCaseBassFace 2015-09-05
I've been binging on it the past 2 days. They're definitely onto something.
2 samsterlicious 2015-09-05
wasnt feeling the bonfire
1 danimalplanimal 2015-09-05
the earlier ones were rough but it seems to be improving
2 Motline 2015-09-05
Race Wars is a favorite of mine personally, but I don't see how anyone here couldn't enjoy the bonfire.
2 Battler4321 2015-09-05
It really is the best show. Two funny guys bouncing off each other.
1 wizardnug 2015-09-05
how and when do i listen to it??
-2 YourOldPalHoward 2015-09-05
NotLoganHighestPrimate uploads it to YouTube.
1 weqweqe222 2015-09-05
That moment when you just nod your head instead of getting mad.
But to stay on topic i don't think i am ever going to listen to any of this shit. It's 2015 man, time to abandon this dead fucking medium for good.

Are you serious with all this immature hype? It's just some comedy radio show. It is not that important at all. I'll live my life just fine without ever hearing a word of it if I so choose. It isn't the fucking gospel or some shit. Jesus.
