It's good because he is prepared. He doesn't mail it in and actually gives a shit about the end result.
That is also why Sam's show is better than Opie & Jim's. Having an idea of how a show should go, the guests you're going to interview, and just a set amount of objectives would at least make it sound better than clearing saying "So what are we going to talk about today? Let's see what is in the paper and what I heard on the radio while coming in." They're assholes.
I've only heard part of one episode, and I don't even care about most of the nerdy stuff he likes (including this episode, on Legos), but I still found it pretty compelling.
