Queen isn't really my type of music but watch them on YouTube at live aid in 1985 and try telling anyone with 2 functioning ears that old Freddie wasn't one talented bastard.
Queen is accurately rated. I don't see people going overboard with them, they don't have an army of people hating their success, they're pretty much right where they should be.
Queen was more than just Freddy, all 4 of them were and are very talented musicians. Brian May is one of the most influential guitarists, around, but he's overshadowed frequently by Clapton and Page and the others. Roger Taylor is a monster drummer with feel for days, Deacon was a rock solid bass player and a damned good song writer, who wrote many of their hits.
It's harde to judge them now, but when you look at what they were doing, and what else was going on in that era, especially the early years, they were decades ahead of their time. I know they're not for everyone, but Queen II is some of the best songwriting out there, and Night At The Opera is some of the most inventive studio work ever done. There's a documentary on that album that goes over it track by track, they were doing things nobody else were.
They were a huge band, one of the biggest in the world. They were HUGE outside of the US, and they were really popular here in the 70's and 80's. They were one of, if not the first bands to sell out stadiums. They sold millions and millions of albums.
But, I'm not surprised Jim doesn't appreciate them, he doesn't appreciate anything outside of his narrow interests, and he hangs out with hacks like Florentine who won't admit to liking Queen, because Freddy was gay, and they didn't write "Iron Man".
The best representation of how NOT overrated Queen were, was the Freddy Mercury Benefit at Wembley. Let's see Ozzy get Axl, Elton, James Hetfield and Liza Minelli onstage sending him off, when he dies. Granted, Ozzy probably respected Freddy, and maybe even loved their music, and the minute he says that publicly, Jim will become an instant fan.
I've never had a problem with Jimmy's love for Sabbath. Every metal band since is in some sort of existential debt to to them. But KISS? When he pairs them together like they are even comparable, I wanna set his wormy skin on fire.
Where are they ranked that he would call them overrated? I'd say they definitely are a top 10 rock band of all time. Top 3 are probably some variation of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin but then after those three Queen is up there with Pink Floyd and AC/DC and The Who and Aerosmith. Freddie Mercury has one of the best voices of all time and they wrote some of the most recognized rock songs ever so you really can't over-rate them unless you are saying they were the greatest band of all time.
Jim is a fucking child musically, he likes make-up and gimmick bands.
Freddy Mercury (in all his gayness) has more onstage presence, and talent than all of Sabbath and KISS put together.
Jim has fucking awful and narrowminded musical choices, He is a fucking ignorant asshole musically, to the point of me ignoring his honest points about real things.
If he wasn't such a massive fan of Rihanna and Kiss and shit like that he'd have a little more wiggle room with that opinion. Remember a few years ago when some stupid wigger hip hop chick made a song about "bicycles" featuring Eminem and Jim thought it was a great song. Tony Iommi would've spit in Jim's coffee if he were alive and present.
hearing the unfinished clone critique Zeppelin, Queen and The Who is almost as maddening as the famed "Oh Dara" singer and his opinion on everything to do with music.
Yeah you're right Ant: The Smiths and Doors stink! puts on Duran Duran
Yeah but as a KISS fan, you should probably curb your criticism of "corny" bands. In fact, you can't call another band "corny" if you're a KISS fan. It's an unwritten rule.
If we're shitting on show associates' musical tastes more generally, let's not forget to put Big Jay on the chopping block. I was pretty psyched when I learned that he was a metalhead and then immediately disappointed when I found out that the metal in question was the likes of Korn and Marilyn Manson.
Ugh, really? I mean, I don't hate Manson or nu-metal in general, but come on. You shouldn't go around trying to be this badass metal guy when that's the extent of your metal knowledge. He's basically a fatter Florentine and Norton.
Listening to a Nopie with slump shouldered Joe in studio today and Jimmy thought Dark Knight Rises was pro-Occupy Wall Street. He's a tone deaf anorexic.
Neither do deep KISS tracks, though. When people talk about KISS they talk about the gimmick, not the music, and Jim considers them one of the best bands of all time.

How anyone can consider "Iron Man" antything less than the gayest song in the history of the world, I'll never know.

You can't take anything he says about music seriously, his opinion has no merit.

Well, Bill Murray has never helped Jim's career. But Imus, Dice, and Jay Leno are all consistently hilarious.

By not only admitting to liking KISS, but also citing them as a great band, he's revoked his right to criticise any and all music.

Never did I ever think I would see a mention of "The Prophet's Song" in this sub.
It's definitely the best on A Night at the Opera, but for my money "It's Late" is Queen's best.

Yep. Decent arena rock with a talented frontman that gets touted as the second coming of the Messiah.
