There's a subset of Anthony supporters who are entirely rational and like him because of all the years of entertainment/laughs he provided. There's also a subset of deluded conspiracy theorists who think everyone who would ever besmirch their spiritual leader is being paid/is a family member of Opie.

There are some individuals who seem to be using the turning tide as a cover to defend Opie (your u/ShadowbannedKeith and u/HogsBigBen, for example), but I agree that the general backlash against Ant is both legit and warranted.

I definitely think there's obsessive anti-Anthony people who create multiple accounts and follow people... but people do the same exact thing with Opie. The people who think there's some conspiracy out there targeting one person are asinine.

As someone who defends/likes Opie more than the vast majority here:

It's not that he's perfect by any means. It's also not that he's a tenth as funny on air as Anthony, Jim, or most of the comics in studio (Florentine excepted). It's the pendulum shift - the anti-Opie posts get so ridiculous, often in the context of Ant ballwashing, that pointing out the positives Opie has becomes relevant.

People are acting like Ant is getting hate for NO reason.. it's not like he's continuing to bash Opie, when Opie doesn't even acknowledge Ant's existence anymore.. and to stirring up "juicy gossip" about Sam Roberts and Opie on his show, which turned out to be completely false.. and his twitter out burts over blacks every 2 minutes...

Yeah, people seem to forget that Ron and Anthony Show fakeout is what caused people to turn on him the most. The Greggshells episode was pretty much days later, which was a bit of a band-aid. Even ignoring all his race talk that people don't like, the fake Sam Roberts Show/Opie spat was just the final death knell.

Also, if there would be grounds for accusing anyone of doing something hidden to manipulate online numbers, wouldn't it be the guy who's openly lying about ex-coworkers on his radio show and making - then immediately deleting - videos bashing them?

In fairness, Opie does seem to have the more mercenary attitude towards social media. Ant uses it almost exclusively as a platform for shooting himself in the foot.

Still, I agree that there's no need to go looking for a deeper explanation when the simplest one is that Ant has made an ass of himself.

I could see a conspiracy in play, but the Ant sentiment doesn't just happen out of nowhere without the periscope in Hawaii, the greggshells episode burning a 20 yr bridge to appease people on the internet, constant race talk with monkey noises over riots, the Bennington screwup and intervention, NYC studio problems, the 14 yr old catfishing story, the christmas picture with the 17 yr old, and so on.

Ant did this to himself. It's not like any of what I just mentioned didn't happen. Lets not forget in March after greggshells the TACS sub had a picture of 2 of them boxing and Ant with the KO. Ant was loving every minute of what went on reddit.

2000 new subscribers and the majority of them learned about reddit because of TACS greggshells and Opies breakdown response, where somehow Opie ends up looking better (but sounding dumber)

I do find it strange how quickly and completely the sub has reversed itself, but I think that's just the nature of Reddit. Opinions avalanche. Majorities are never close, always overwhelming.
