The post O&A syndrome
31 2015-07-13 by srb9586
I wanted to just get an honest opinion from listeners to this show, a great radio show, probably at its peak the funniest radio show ever. I found myself, even towards the end of O&A, listening to more and more podcasts of funny comics on the show (Stanhope, Rogan, Burr, Etc.) And of course ron and fez/bennington And I found myself disconnecting from real conversations with people, I talked to them, but really, they weren't interesting to me. Since the shows demise, I've noticed even more of a disconnect, I am 29, work a decent job and talk to people every day, shoot the shit, talk about the daily nonsense news etc, and I really just dont laugh at anybody anymore, unless they are falling in a puddle, or get hurt. The shit people say every day to me just isnt fucking funny. I wonder if this subreddit is the same. The only enjoyment I get, is listening to other people make me laugh, but really, I dont like laughing, it annoys me, its like getting tickled. So what am I?

Sounds a little insane buddy. But yes, after listening to some of the funniest people in the world being completely candid about deep feelings and making fun of themselves and eachother in hilarious and articulate ways, you can forget normal people dont understand what level funny can get to. It's easy to be looking for that depth and level of comedy in your life with other people but you have to realize 90% of the world has never even laughed on such a comedic level before like we have from listening to these guys, let alone created that kind of comedic chemistry with someone.

Like Icarus we flew too close to the comedy Sun and got our pekkas all burnt.

Im actually completely fine. But i feel like thats what this subreddit has become.
7 srb9586 2015-07-13
I mean im drunk as fuck right now, but after reading all of this garbage every day, it just made me realize what a negative anti social cunt I had become. And I had to post this. I know I'm going to get fucking annihilated, but I dont care. I think giving 10% is being quite generous. We got to listen to the funniest people in the world being honest and candid. And now we are all cunts because we dont get it every day anymore.
21 shameofyou 2015-07-13
Have you ever thought you might have a problem with drinking? There was a two day stretch back in the 80's where I drank so much my buddy told me I was out of control so I stopped both drinking and talking to him and surrounded myself with a group of ex-addicts.
7 srb9586 2015-07-13
Sure. Goddamn do i regret posting this.

There's amazing support systems nowadays, I suggest listening to this hotline call first and then following your instinct on how to proceed.

only you and oscar wilde would acknowledge the genius of a woman shoving a wiffle bat up her twat. comedy. genius. the masses just don't know. get a grip.
1 nhlroyalty 2015-07-13
yep, thats all that ever happened on the show in 20 years. congratulations you just exposed yourself as "doesn't get the subtle jokes" guy.
1 JohnQNo1 2015-07-13
theyre funny but theyre not comedy geniuses
1 nhlroyalty 2015-07-13
youre a fucking idiot and it doesn't surprise me that youre focused on something completely irrelevant to the point of the thread: yes there will likely be a drop off when you listen 16+ hours of comedians bantering about the funny smell of cunt when you talk to bob and joe at the water cooler about XYZ. moron.
8 aprosbro 2015-07-13
You sound like a school shooter.
24 Wsallgood 2015-07-13
Let's hope. This sub needs a good publicity boost.
7 CUNTYMOM 2015-07-13
so true, listening to some of the best comedians in the world talk all day for sure makes it hard for me to laugh at a lot of normal people. i mean i laugh but not really hard like i used to.
1 cottonsweatpants 2015-07-13
Same, and with Reddit.. I feel like I've heard every joke, watched every video before people send me links.
1 Slippery_Slope_Guy 2015-07-13
You ever venture into regular reddit and the top comment is the exact same joke you've read or heard a million times?
6 cottonsweatpants 2015-07-13
The other night someone was trying to pass off Louie c k jokes as his own at the bar. I'm 30 and some females my age and younger talk in memes and hashtags.
I cry now.
5 Dennyisthepisslord 2015-07-13
Before i found O&A i liked people. Now i hate with a burning passion. It's ruined me.
5 TayNez 2015-07-13
Does anybody remember laughter?
3 spicysandwich80 2015-07-13
I know what you mean. Polite conversation is so much more boring to me now than before. You can kind of see how these guys have such small social circles... it's because they're paid to think like assholes. Hilarious assholes.
7 srb9586 2015-07-13
It gets to a point where im inserting chip references in, or saying "does it, will it, have ya, will ya" all the time, just to entertain myself.
3 srb9586 2015-07-13
But nobody gets it. Except me. Its fucking weird man.
8 srb9586 2015-07-13
It was relevant at the time, when the show was on, i could introduce people to the show etc, but now im like, "no theres a great patrice/burr/louisck/jimmy laughing comp episode from 2011 or whenever you gotta hear" people just look at me like im trying to show them a duck dynasty clip

Calm down sir. Life is a mixture of shit and some other shit. You try to make the best of it you can.
People in everyday life suck and are not funny. Some are cool. Most you can hope for from people is to be nice.
My advice to you is to concentrate on something productive that makes you happy. If you hate what you do then stop doing it and find a new life path. Not easy but it beats being miserable.
3 cottonsweatpants 2015-07-13
On the subway today, a man came up to me to start a conversation. He made small talk, a lonely man talking about the weather and other things. I tried to be pleasant and accommodating, but my head hurt from his banality. I almost didn't notice it had happened, but I suddenly threw up all over him. He was not pleased, and I couldn't stop laughing.
2 CCRed95 2015-07-13
O&A completely ruined 'good natured ribbing / fun laughter' for me, it just makes me sick
2 AzraelApollyon 2015-07-13
In hindsight, the show isn't as great as it seemed in my own mind. I listened to Stern and O&A since the late 90's and loved them both.
I get what you're saying though, after I discovered George Carlin years ago I was pretty much done with stand up. Nothing is ever going to top that guy in my world.
2 CowsAreCurious 2015-07-13
I started listening when they first got to XM. I was about 15 so I would say it has definitely warped my view on what is funny. I liked how mean the show would get with each other and it was always so funny and entertaining to watching people like Vos and Bobby come in and be on their guard from each other the entire time, while taking every opportunity to smash each other.
It's the main reason I can't find a lot of stand ups funny anymore, especially west coast comics and like 99.9% of all women comics. The show also made me hate and feel annoyed with the "alt comics" that are present in most podcasts these days.
Also, a lot of younger comics these days try and do the "intellectual" thing with their comedy where they have this smug "am i right or am i right, guys?" look on their face when talking about shit. They try to be smart/poignant and funny but they more often than not just come off as douchey. It's a fine line and we saw several people on O&A pull it off successfully.
2 opieanthonyjim 2015-07-13
I don't even listen to either show anymore. O&J and TACS both suck ass. I'll pop on Opie radio when I'm in my car occasionally because I still have XM, but I don't listen regularly and I didn't renew my TACS subscription.
Tho I still need something for my lunch break and workout in the gym after work. So I download old O&A classic clips from YouTube and listen to them. Anything from 05-2012 is fine by me.
1 NashuaDan 2015-07-13
You probably should start drinking.
1 ShaneMichaelOfficial 2015-07-13
Yes on the nothing is funny part.. also some of my co-workers find my humor "vulgar".. I've actually had to just keep my mouth shut when it comes to jokes around the office, unless it's just me and my manager..
I guess hearing jimmy tell listeners to go fuck their mothers and to die of cancer has desensitized me..
1 Lupin76 2015-07-13
Huh? None of my friends are into O&A, or have ever even heard of it. THeir sense of humor is much more tame. I still get good laughs from them.
0 stinkskc 2015-07-13
So your like a hipster of comedy.
-2 shameofyou 2015-07-13
Seems about right, I will say your freeze peach ends where my feelings begin so don't you dare attempt blue or taboo humor. Fortunately for us we now have 107 sock puppet accounts to preach moral superiority without the risk of tickling anyones funny bone.
4 WilliamTellAll 2015-07-13
no one calls them "sock puppet accounts"
Stop it.
-1 shameofyou 2015-07-13
actually that's exactly what they call them, all 107 controlled by one lonely soul. you need to up your socjus knowledge bruv.

Jesus christ, its a fucking defunct radio show.
This reminds me of the thread titled "has listening to O&A made you funnier aswell?"
The cringe.
2 winkleham 2015-07-13
Eeeew
1 CCRed95 2015-07-13
I didnt see that thread but is it really that rediculous that listening to funny people as often as i listen to o&a made me funnier? I wouldnt make a thread telling everyone about it, but its not that outlandish. Thats why im always suprised how after 20 years opie has picked up nothing.
2 axeheadroad 2015-07-13
No. You are not funny. You might be funny on thi sub, but irl people take your O&A sense of humor as a sign to never fuck you or even hang out with you.
1 CCRed95 2015-07-13
i dont just do o&a bits in my social life. But just like listening to smart people makes you smarter, listening to funny people can make you funnier.
1 I_Hate_Knickers 2015-07-13
He picked up breasts. That made him funnier.
