Show references you don't understand

Don't understand the reference for:

The Anthony: "Hi John"

The Opie: "Harvey!" (which I hate)

9 times out of 10 if you don't understand a references it means you just haven't seen the Godfather or Goodfellas.

Platoon is way up there as well

Very true sir.

Fargo is another big one. What's some of them other references we got??

Milluh's Crossing

Milluh's Crossing... That watch pretty good, don't it?

Wait, what is that line from? Fargo?

Nah. It's from this.

https://youtu.be/bBm4_5WSbYk

No, that line is not from Fargo. These were always used a lot:

"Oh ya? Is it reasonable?"

"Hello Wade, it's Jerry. Wade It's Jerry. Hello wade...." (Usually they'd change the name based on what they were talking about)

"Gotta get that trucoat"

"This is my deal Wade!"

I'm not gonna debate you, Jerry.

Ah yes, forgot that one!

One of my favorite bits was when Anthony would relate a story that had happened to friends of his, but it was really a Seinfeld plot, and Opie and Jim would miss it.

The best one was when they were talking about the knock-out game and Ant did that with the Seinfeld finale.

Th day he did it and Travis had those seinfield music cued up was amazing

As much as Ant is a pedo-creep, racist d-bag sometimes... He was put into context in the show. Goddammit, I miss O&A+J...

What's the audio drop they play of a crying woman over the phone saying "I hate yew"?

Pretty sure that's a caller who they messed with in the WNEW days.

[deleted]

Opie: Alright we got mike on the line

Ant/Jim: MIKE.

Godfather When Fredo talks to Mike about strong-arming Moe Green " MIKE! You don't come to Las Vegas and talk to Moe Green like that!"

Ant and Jim hold out the M so its MMMMIKE! Not like how Fredo says it at all.

Also where the "I WAS STEPPED OVA. IM SMAHT, NOT LIKE EVERYONE SAYS" comes from.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYabrQrXt4A

"Hi John" is a reference to the prank phone call Opie made to an old lady about some guy named "Bob" (or whatever the name was) died. She asked for Opie's name and he said John, so she acknowledged him by saying "Hi John!" in an old lady kinda way. It's funny clip, which I'm too lazy to search out, so go fuck yourself

"Ya' kiddin! How did it happen"

"Wehyah?"

the spanish version is also great

guillermo es muerto

That really petered out.

The funniest phone call ever

Up until yesterday I didn't know that "sue everybody!" was a jerky boys thing.

Opies talking about Harvey Levin from tmz, I felt ashamed even typing that.

What do YOU think about Opies reference to Harvey Levin?

It's originally a reference to The Honeymooners episode where Ralph is going to fight a man named Harvey. That's how he says it.

But I'm sure Opie did bastardize it to make it about the TMZ guy.

Tss wats the won where Josh Travolta is like 'thiss is a bunch of pulp fickshin or sumpthin'

"Linger longer" -- I understand what it means, but how did that phrase originate?

"Linger longer" is a catchphrase used by The Greaseman that has been co-opted by Opie and Anthony. The phrase is often used whenever a reference to a past show is mentioned. Listeners are told they should "linger longer" (i.e. spend more time listening to the show) to understand the reference.

*

Doug Tracht, AKA The Greaseman is a radio DJ who was fired in 1999 after making a joke about blacks being dragged behind trucks, but has since returned to the air. After Opie and Anthony got in trouble for the Sex for Sam 3 incident, Greaseman appeared on Fox News criticizing O&A. Anthony does a spot-on impression of him.

Greaseman is known for unnecessarily rolling his R's, goofing on non-whites, and using a hackey radio voice. Some of his catchphrases include "Linger longer", "Bone dry", "Slingin' lead" and "Waddle doodle".

So there is hope for Ant's return after all

Awesome, thank you.

There are some great Stern show clips on YouTube mocking The Greaseman covering/mocking his apology speech and subsequent firing.

I'll check those out. I grew up in MD and he would sometimes be at O's games and local events. Then the Lauren Hill incident happened....

All The Back To The Future shit

Ant likes the Back To The Future movies. That's basically it.

Mayyyor!

"Hey you, get yer damn hands off her"

"When the hell did this happen?! Why wasn't I told?!"

[deleted]

Hello Bill!!!

I understand that "Me: ..." means Opie speaking, but why?

He does it on twitter when he responds to someone.

thanks

Yeah I didn't get the genesis of that either. Thanky poo.

Can someone please explain the "Cruising Colin" bit to me? Is it a reference or something?

once when Keith Robinson was also a guest, they started joking about Colin cruising around parks looking to trick kids to get in his car. it's a really funny episode.

That was a great one. His fake mustache falling off.

cheep cheep cheep (?)

Richard in the treehouse story?

this might be 3 Stooges sleep noises?

Correct answer.

The segment with people calling in about the Penn State scandal is hilarious.

literally my favorite o&a moment. "Curley!"

"Hey what's he doing?! He's giving that boy a Roman War Helmet!"

"hey Moe, hit him with a wrench before he penetrates that boy"

This is one of the funniest bits in the last 5 years of the show. Every time someone says Curley and he keeps going into the bit. So good. Makes me sad listening to it on youtube now that it's over.

"Mistah Fabisham, Mistah Fabisham!"

...........?

The Honeymooners.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1RLh1m802A

This is the specific episode that Mr. Faversham appeared in. He's a director.

Not really a reference, but I never understood the whole "swim walk" thing.

seconded

I think it's a visual bit where Jim does a goofy dance after saying something cheeky. Kinda like pop-lockin'

If I remember correctly Jimmy actually did some swim-walking in the pool as exercise one day and he made fun of himself and how old/dorky it is. It then morphed into a "congratulatory self-pat" after a zinger.

I like using it in everyday life.

Not really a reference, but a sound clip. It sounds like someone with a really fat tongue making a noise that sounds like "awick awick awick." I never understood what that was supposed to be.

It's drunk minime

"Mulatto, mongrel race! Both races will be destroyed!"

No idea where this is from or if it even is a reference.

Anthony's diary.

It's from the movie Mississippi Burning.

Ant: "X will NOT make that picture! He's going to be a big STAR! Acting lessons! Singing lessons!"

Godfather.

Godfather/Johnny Fontane

Jack Woltz actually says these lines - not Johnny Fontaine.

X = Johnny Fontaine

[deleted]

There is this drop where you can't really understand what the dude is saying but it sounds like distorted "OH GOOD LORD" and like he's falling down steps or something. This is pretty much the only reference left that I don't get.

Wow, I always thought it was from the show, not RL. Way funnier like this.

sidenote: what a shittily designed stage, that is just asking for performers to drop.

There it is.

I think it's from Fraiser. ekther that or Kelsey Gammer falling down in something else.

He fell off the stage.

ALABAMA MAAAN

"Okay Terrfic!" ??

A voice over guy (sorry I forget his name) was doing commercial reads in the sound booth with Steve C. Steve told the guy that they are done for the day and he replied "OK terrific" into the mic.

EDIT: From OApedia,

"OK, Terrific" is a sound bite taken from an Opie & Anthony WNEW station sweeper (circa 99-00), spoken by the only production employee of the show at the time.

The clip was from Scott Muni, a DJ at WNEW.

https://oapedia.com/oa/Scott_Muni

tsss fuckkin when Chippa goes, "dat dont make no sense" tss

oh literal chip

Where does 'B-b-b-b-b-b-b-boys' come from? Same with 'MIKE!'

'B-b-b-b-b-b-b-boys'

Their old boss in Boston used to address them this way

'MIKE!'

Read the thread, asshole

Remember when someone called in and did "bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb..." for 5 minutes? That was awesome.

B-b-b-b-boys is supposed to be a Bruce Mittman reference (their GM from WAAF).

https://youtu.be/-dXeqd2Dkco?t=12m43s

read in a slightly gay WASPy accent

b-b-b-boys the fagalas are angry about that anti-gay stunt

I should be working on my slice today, now I'm dealing with the schwoogies because of you two

The only one Im not 100% on is "GoooodEveninnng". (Its not Young Frankenstein is it?)

I think that's A Clockwork Orange.

ahhhh,,yes.that's right. God I love me a random "gooooodEvening" from Yimmy to a caller.(Rarely does it the last few yrs)

It's from a clock work orange. Also, No, she's dead!, She was very badly raped you see! & Try the wine!

Food! Alriight!

I knew there was another one, but I couldn't think of it.

"Frank is better"

It's "Oh, Frank was better!?", Tony says it in Scarface when Elvira tells him he's not that good at fucking her.

ohh. kinda follows the goodfellas/godfather rules as ive never seen scarface. is that clip from the movie on youtube?

Scarface.

EYE VASS KIDDINK!

Never got that one.

I think Scarface when he is in the hot tub.

Anyone know where the "raaaachel, yeewww" voice comes from that Jim and Ant do from time to time?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVC-EW36Ngk#t=10m15s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_bXJk64BJ8#t=69m35s

The Honeymooners. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbJNyGbFNRo

Really makes you think about how ancient they are.

The Honeymooners rules though. I'm 25 and will watch it whenever it's on.

The show's good no matter how old you are.

I agree with that. I meant all the references listed like this makes me realize how old they are, because every show and movie is at least 30 years old.

'the bit'

In comedy, a whole joke-setup-punchline structure is called a bit. Thus, if someone criticizes a joke in a literal fashion they're an idiot because "that's the bit."

It also may more specifically refer to the feud with Maxwell, particularly if it's expressed as "DOODA BIT"

ME: You think I didn't know that? GET A LOAD OF THIS GUY!

THAT'S THE BIT!

Here are some I don't get, despite listening for almost 9 years: Opie: "I think I went with my friend..." Anthony: "MY FRIEND and I would like some coffee and cake."

The "Liar, Whore, Liar Whore!" Sound effect.

The "Sooooooooooooooo...isn't this great!" Sound effect.

"Sooooooooooooooo...isn't this great!" Some wash detergent commercial

That's from Fast times.

Nope. It's from an old detergent commercial that Jimmy was reminiscing about.

"Liar, whore! Liar whore and you know it!" is from This Boy's Life:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9E_OBa7YK5E

The Liar whore lair sound clip is from the Butters episode of South Park. No sure about the rest though.

The Liar whore lair sound clip is from the Butters episode of South Park.

Actually it's from a Robert De Niro and Leonardo Di Caprio movie called This Boy's Life

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMYcoKvMimU

[deleted]

You're thinking of the clip that just says "LIAR!!"

I was a big fan of most of the regularly referenced movies on O&A before I ever heard the show but, "OK, faggot what's next?" - what movie tv show is that from?

History of the World Part 1, I believe.

Cheers.

I thought it was Full Metal Jacket

I've seen Full Metal Jacket many times. Fairly sure it's not that.

[deleted]

Of course Jimmy missed it. Apparently he missed TV through the entire 90s

this thread makes me feel like such a loser for knowing all of these references, i wasted so much of my life.

[deleted]

The Shining, when Grady is talking to Jack in the bathroom. He says it like three or four times.

No clue where "ya kiddin" when someone is taking a dirtnap comes from.

I'm an idiot, heard it 30 times and never put it together.

Anyone one know where the black guy saying "Daym! You just been pwned!" is from?

That was a white guy, and it was their old body guard Master PO

I don't think I don't know any of their references. That being said, you're probably not missing much, mostly just throw away references anyway.

Ant likes the Back To The Future movies. That's basically it.

"When the hell did this happen?! Why wasn't I told?!"

It's drunk minime

"Hey you, get yer damn hands off her"
