Opie was more relaxed and even funnier back then, I'm 30 minutes in now and he hasn't said anything absolutely dumb and had a couple of good lines/add-ons. Now on the air he just fills up space by repeating things (either what others have said or his own meaningless comment). Ant and Jim always save Opie, they recontextualize what he says so it doesn't sound so bad, without Ant doing that ...well, we all understand...
At 1:08:30, Ant is showing off his new camera and Jimmy says "Wow, somebody wants to get some discreet photos" and Opie follows up "That lens belongs in a bush". Then Ant goes on to explain how he was taking pictures looking into the windows of the hotel opposite his apartment but is annoyed that he didn't get any nudes, "I didn't get any nudes, but I got some women walking around in little fuckin' nighties and shit ... I'll take a few more later."
The show may have been flawed toward the end but it could still be great (and I would listen to most shows straight through) even with Opie's overbearing Livia Soprano black cloud of suck.
My God this show is just so much better. It's effortless. As much as those two genuinely despise each other, they knew how to work together and put together some funny shit even on a throw-away day like this show clearly was.
And I love how Ant pretends to be outraged at the caller saying 'nigger' at 1:06:25 lol
As I recall, a year ago today we were laughing at how Ant flipped the fuck out and was going insane, and how people were sending in all sorts of incriminating shit: the eugenics rant, various Ant rants, and all that.
While it sucks now, that couple of days where the world woke up to Ant's nastier side was pretty fucking hilarious.
