It depends on the day, and which argument he needs to make.

Management doesn't like this new show...... they LOVE it

/u/StevenKnight you're surprised that a sociopath & pathological liar told a lie? He has absolutely no clue how many people listen or how to be truthful.
6 AiCPearlJam 2015-06-18
He either has no clue, or knows all too well how many listeners he has lost over the past year.
2 ShaneMichaelOfficial 2015-06-18
Both.

20,000 new subscribers, a hit with women and the GLBT community, what happened to that? Now Opie says he cannot even get the number of listeners but before Opie was bragging about newfound success with several demographics you would not expect to listen to the show.
It is a hard thing for a man to lie and maintain his lies credibly for he must possess an infallible memory, and no man can live without making mistakes.
7 winkleham 2015-06-18
Needless to say, it's even harder for a man with sub-human intelligence.
7 TheTacsMan 2015-06-18
Subs went up about 20K after Anthony left. In fact, our numbers in the LGBTYZD community went up big time. Must admit we had a slight dip in our Nazi demos, but besides that, all good brothaman. Nice try with the hate tho.
7 AssMcPlay 2015-06-18
He knows the numbers when it's convenient and isn't privy to them (seriously guys, they don't show us) when it's convenient. Honestly, I'd be surprised if they had 100k listeners
4 blackirishlad 2015-06-18
i don't see how they could have 20k
6 VeritablyClean 2015-06-18
Rons prickling Opie too
11 [deleted] 2015-06-18
He asked opie about greggshells opie said "I'm working on that"
4 ncervo 2015-06-18
Is Ron on the show today? When did this happen?
3 [deleted] 2015-06-18
No. Opie and Ron are on sirius 121 right now
8 schmoegreene 2015-06-18
What show? So I can look it up online.
edit: The show is called Stand up With Pete Dominick.
edit 2: Done after 20 mins. Listening to Opie tell the origin story of his nickname and praise Brother Wease was more than I could take.

are you surprised? this is a guy who claims to have black friends and grew up with black guys yet in 2007 during the my baby is black bit he asks "black people shave differently? what are razor bumps?"
13 PrdMgr 2015-06-18
In all fairness, how often do you discuss shaving habits with your friends?
6 TriangleDimes 2015-06-18
In all fairness, weird hair shit dominates like 60% of all black conversations. If you're a white person and hang out with black chicks for a month and don't leave with a PhD in black haircare, it's cause they were being reserved cause they thought you were Jewish.
4 JeremyACrosby 2015-06-18
true, Chris Rock even made a movie about it
2 keemers 2015-06-18
Yep. I know way more than I'll ever need to know about black girl hair.
1 nytimesblows1212 2015-06-18
its something that you just pick up though, i grew up in a black high school and shit like that just comes up "oh i cut myself shaving" or something like that just sparks a conversation that shows you some differences amongst people
-4 pabben2 2015-06-18
its not something you pick up.
2 blackirishlad 2015-06-18
then you're not observant enough or just stupid.
in otherwords: opie
1 pabben2 2015-06-18
trust me im observant enough!
3 tim1245 2015-06-18
i have black friends and grew up in a mixed HS, and I don't know about black shaving habits. Opie is hateable, but some of you people are so pathetic in your reaching
5 Patmcpsu 2015-06-18
Management obviously wanted the show to become less edgy and more mainstream. After Opie made the switch, they bluffed by saying the show is gaining popularity to reaffirm it's the "right" move.
2 det8924 2015-06-18
Probably, they must have been sick of Ant's racial crap so they kept pumping up Opie and Jim's safe style. Almost a year later the show is still pretty boring but at least it seems like they are trying more recently.
5 kevin121312 2015-06-18
Someone should call the show pretending to be Chuck and then call him out on this. There is no way for Sirius to charge advertisers one price for Stern and another for OnJ if they can't justify the additional cost for Stern by showing them how many people they reach. Does he think that advertisers are just accepting "we don't know numbers" when signing a contract? If that's the case, then an advertiser could be paying $1000 for a spot that only 5 ppl are listening to. If Opie really believes this, Greenstein must really laugh at him.
9 Wsallgood 2015-06-18
Chuck calls the hotline number. The redneck Christmas tree farmer has the hotline number to Opieraqio.
Let that sink in for a minute.
1 blackirishlad 2015-06-18
i remember being shocked when he said he was going to give him the hotline. and more than a few people that have that number were also shocked and said so.
i.... i've just never fucking heard it done before. that was unprecedented. some mediocre regular caller. not on the OnA show at least.
1 majestik6 2015-06-18
I used to buy advertising.
Companies lie about their numbers constantly.
I started plenty of ad campaigns that were a complete bust. It's a real crapshoot.
5 _TheConsumer_ 2015-06-18
The only way Sirius would know the exact number of subscribers is if it were calculating the number of people who have Sirius receivers that called to retain OpieRadio after their receiver's trial period was over. XM receivers still get OpieRadio for free as part of it's packaging - and therefore, cannot be tracked.
So, 20k may be an accurate number. After all, all new cars come with SXM. However, 20k may be an accurate, miserably low number.
There were 15.6 million new car sales in 2013. Let's assume the following:
So, 7.5 million cars were "new" to SXM. After a 3-6 month trial, people need to subscribe. Let's assume most people subscribe, because SXM practically gives you service for free if you call to cancel.
If 6 million (of the 7.5 million) people subscribe for the year, that means that 1.5 million people subscribed every 3 months (quarterly.)
Three months after Anthony's firing, Opie said "we just added 20k new subscribers to the channel." That means that of the 1.5 million new SXM radios for those three months, 20k people specifically requested to keep OpieRadio.
That amounts to a retention rate of 1.3%
Not exactly an earth shattering number. Moreover, we don't know what the retention rate was when Anthony was on the show.
3 NastyPiggy 2015-06-18
Well, there's no way of knowing what channels are being listened to on receivers, but they could "guesstimate" based on what stations siriusXM internet subscribers are listening to.
3 francis_goatman 2015-06-18
Opie sucks, we can agree on that. But I hate it when this sub does math. You have no way of knowing if any of the percentages you just gave are correct (50% of cars sold have Sirius? Cmon dude.) Everyone here is way better at shit jokes and Chip impressions.
1 _TheConsumer_ 2015-06-18
First off, I did say "let's assume."
Secondly, there are only two types of receivers in new cars - XM receivers and Sirius receivers. So, saying 50% of new cars sold have Sirius receivers (and not XM receivers) is not way off.
Even though they are the same company, they still maintain the different receivers - for God knows what reason. For example, Ford features Sirius receivers, Nissan features XM receivers.
I didn't pick numbers out of the air.
2 Wsallgood 2015-06-18
The company also send out listener surveys. They ask what you listen to and the times. I haven't gotten one in years though.
2 I_Hate_Knickers 2015-06-18
I hate Opie
4 colonizemalar 2015-06-18
Well that's funny because he seemed pretty sure how many more listeners they had than EW during that gaffigan episode. I believe he said they were the second morning show to stern on xm. Opie please realize you are not smart enough to pull the wool over anyone's eyes, leave that to Bennington. Let's be honest top 20 smashes every talk show... I Loved o&a bc it was never radio for the masses... The Radio hypeman is not only hack, it's an anachronism
3 thecrazing 2015-06-18
/u/StevenKnight Please upload this Opie+Ron appearance to your channel.
3 oklolol 2015-06-18
ME: THAT'S THE BIT . DUH!
2 pabben2 2015-06-18
they have said this since forever that they dont really know how many listeners they have, even since like 2005-2008
1 majestik6 2015-06-18
At least a dozen times I've explained how it's not technically possible to determine who is listening to what on satellite radio.
Howard Stern has used this to his advantage, to make wildly exaggerated claims about his listenership. Claims which cannot be confirmed, it's technically impossible.
(Basically satellite radio is a one-way stream; you're not sending data back anywhere, so they don't know if you're listening or not, and they don't know WHAT you're listening to.)
1 nochinzilch 2015-06-18
They explained it once. They can get the numbers for online and app listeners, but it is technologically impossible to get the numbers for satellite listeners. They would have to pay a service like Arbitron to get any kind of info. And that would probably end up skewed because so many satellite users are drivers/truckers.
1 SpaceEdge 2015-06-18
He has always flip-flopped on whether Sirius gives him the numbers and Sirius doesn't give him the numbers.
1 anal-surprise 2015-06-18
I thought satellite was a one-way signal that makes it impossible to track who's tuning in or what channel they're tuning in to... this is why Stern went there, so no one could ever track his numbers again and he could let the show die slowly without any financial repercussions.
All Sirius knows is how many subscribers they have total on any given month, right?

In the past he said they can tell him numbers for people listening online and that from that they can sort of figure out how many people listen on the radio.
I guess it would work like this, they have 100 (just an easy number to work with) people who subscribe to the online service and 4 of them listen to Opieradio; so they can assume that 4 out of every 100 radio listeners also listen to the show.
But he has said they can only give him hard numbers for online listeners on more than a few occasions.
1 Mrmet2087 2015-06-18
He has never seen the numbers. There's no way to tell. He lied to take a shot at Anthony about how since he's left subscribers have gone up, which is simply impossible given how many people cancelled in the wake of Ant's firing.

Several times?
Also, I'm pretty sure he just said they had gained listeners. Doesn't mean he knows how many listeners they have overall.
8 BRUTAL_ANAL_RAPE8888 2015-06-18
He tweeted that management told him the numbers after being called out
3 boofk 2015-06-18
He has tweeted atleast twice exact numbers. I wanna say 9,000 and 20,000.
-11 lickitoff 2015-06-18
The "20,000 new listeners" was a bit. He trolled you and you took the bait.
8 kevin121312 2015-06-18
I don't think anyone believed him. If he said that Sirius is finally giving him the numbers and they gained 4 new listeners, I'd believe that. Unless he didn't see the minus sign next to 20,000
