It ruins whatever's being said. I'm trying to laugh at Jimmy then it just gets shut down by what sounds like a hand-vacuum in the death throes of trying to start up for the last time.
It's how you know it's fake. What's going through his mind is "Jimmy's the only one who's going to add laughter to my show, since I don't have the talent to do so, so when I laugh I best not step on his lines", so he just makes a decision to quietly fake-laugh his way through the whole thing until it's killed enough time until where he feels it's sufficient to move on to the next current event or caller.
Shit I tapped out a year ago, from listening to every show to now just popping in a few times a week for a couple minutes to see what shite Opie is spewing. I'll stay on the channel longer if anyone but him is talking.
When Ant was still on and Opie didn't show, almost always on with Ant and Jim was a regular like Bob Kelly. I garuantee you that was a selling point to get them to wake up early to do the show.
