And, even though it's frustrating to hear Opie say 'Alright I say the word wrong' gearing up for defensive, and the way he says 'I'd be the first to admit I'd have a long list of my own' -- as though there's any reason besides walking on Greggshells that he doesn't, and he bears to responsibility for that list not existing and it's all up to vague, mysterious forces -- the way he sets a chuckle up with 'Bobo admits he's the guy' is some amount of honest self-deprecation.
It makes sense that he didn't notice. It's not like he's used to an environment in which every little flaw is pointed out, made fun of and picked apart for hours.
I believe he didn't notice this particular instance. He won't point out Opie's inability to speak himself, but he tends to join in once someone else does, like when someone corrected Opie's "prostrate" pronunciation of "prostate".
I don't blame him for not calling him out on this stuff anymore. Jim used to call Opie out every time he mispronounced something and Opie would get cranky and halt the show. I think he just got tired of doing it. It's not like calling Opie out was gonna make him less retarded, the next word he didn't know how to say was always right around the corner.
This. Yes. Laughs had all around until someone got a grounder off Op, and then Opie would get cranky and respond with a "You ass," or "shut the fuck up" rather than something clever. It's really apparent in some of the early XM stories like the Java Log or the Frat Marshmallow story. Opie brought the stories up acting like he's just one of the guys and is just ribbing on himself, but as soon as Jimmy or Ant got two jokes deep on anything, he'd go completely Hole with a "now guuuuys" or "watch it there" or just start name calling them and halting the funny immediately. Not only could he not handle anything directed at him, but he isn't even smart or funny enough to come up with clever responses or to roll with it. He just immediately got bitchy and shut it down.
