I have ~20 TACS episodes saved up just because I'm not interested in the guest, but I don't want to delete them because if I decide not to reup I don't want to lose them, and this is after only being a subscriber for a month and a half. Meanwhile I just delete the JRE shows with bum guests and I can go back any time and download them again...

Yeah, he had to start out subscription based because he was kinda rebelling against having sponsors/people to answer to so he could be uncensored. But thats really not worth it anymore. He's not gonna do anything so wrong that the people who sponsor podcasts pull out. I would love for him to grow to a point where it feels like he is at least part of pop culture like rogan or carolla, but if he keeps it subscription based its not gonna happen. If anyone isnt subscribed by now they NEVER will be. I love Ant and hate to see him have to have z-list Scorch level guests from fishing reality shows, but with the show not growing it doesn't seem possible. I think there are a lot of people on the fence and arent just being cheap, just dont like subscribing to things enough for it to be worth it, that would totally listen every day, otherwise. I obviously dont know exactly how it works out financially, but it seems to me now it would make way more sense to make it free and run on advertisers to grow and become a big podcast name and be relevant again. Remaining relevant and hiding behind a subscription service is an oxymoron. Doesnt Carolla make millions off a free podcast with a subscription to his old ones? I thought that was precisely what Keiths LoS announcement conveyed. One at Creek, one at Ant's. Both exclusive while live, with the Creek going out to youtube sometime after.
I think the main reason ant is apprehensive about doing 100% ad based business model is that he doesn't want to be slave to their sensibilities. He'd have to either consider each and every thing he says or burn through advertisers like nothing.
This is rich coming from Rogan. Rogan does Stand-up and UFC. The podcast helps him sell himself on the road. If he only had the podcast, he would charge as well. And it's not as ridiculous as it sounds. Corolla, Maron, Denis Miller all have their back catalouge available as a paid subscription.
It is a little ridiculous. I do pay for TACS and I enjoy it a lot of the time but you can make good money doing a free podcast. Even Duncan Trussel and Redban make money on their podcasts and they are virtual nobodies. Carolla already has the template for success out there and proved that it works. You give your podcast away for free. You advertise on the podcast. You sell some merch. Every few months you do live podcasts at some location with a comic. The thing is, Carolla is a work horse. He writes books and writes movies and pitches himself for TV shows and sells liquor. Anthony seems to want to just have 2 hours a day 4 days a week and be rich from it. The reason other guys are able to make good money from free podcasts is because they do a lot of work around the podcast that makes it viable. Anthony is never going to reach hundreds of thousands of people with a subscription-based podcast. Carolla does. That's why he is able to sell ads for as much as he does and make a ton of money taking his podcast out on tour. Anthony seems to be wanting to be the same sort of style as Carolla (have a network, talk about conservative issues, be funny, etc.) but when you are charging you are immediately limiting your audience to a size that will never get bigger.
