Actually, today I thought Jim Breuer was more annoying than funny, and I like him usually. One mistake was Opie redirecting the conversation to Breuer's wife; her illness is tragic not entertaining. Should have talked about lighter stuff.

im not trying to be a dick or just trying to be right, just when he defends opie he never compliments him persoanlly just says things like "people except me to bash opie but im not going to" and "no i really do still like doing the show". whereas when talking about ant he always starts with "well he's one of the funniest, most brilliant guys i know and..." and i'd be interested to hear if he ever talked about opie in a similar way if you happened to remember any examples of it.

A straight man? You have to at least understand the joke being made to play that role. Compare Ant or Sam interacting with Chip to Opie.
A ship-steerer? Nopie shows have been consistently fantastic without constant interruptions from idiotic callers. Even if Opie did that job well, which he doesn't, anyone with a clock and an itinerary could do the same.
A radio professional? He's by far the worst speaker in the room and lacks even a middle-school level vocabulary.
Sure, I agree that Opie wasn't meant to be the funny one. I just don't see what, exactly, he WAS meant to be.
