My top 3 are Jimmy, Marc Maron, Jay Mohr. (Even though I NEVER get to see Jimmy live)
But technically speaking, Bill Burr is the best comic working. He's a machine. I watched him build that whole hour last year, I saw him at least once a month and it was just unbelievable. He's every bit as funny in his act as he is off the cuff/just bullshitting, that is so fucking rare.
Jay Mohr? I watched a recent stand up of his on netflix and couldn't get through it. Kept talking about his kids and wife and I hear his wife writes his stuff. Explain yourself.
I go to see Jay at the Melrose Improv at least once a year. He engages the audience and the crowd more than any other comic I know. He talks to everyone like you're his buddy, like he's telling us shit he doesn't tell anyone else, like we're all in this room for one shared experience. He'll tell you how much fun he's having, how cool it is that we're all having this shared thing together. I fucking love that, it's not a detached, dick joke-comic just running through his shit, he makes it feel like every performance is special. There's either no opener at all, or one guy that does 10 minutes and then 90 minutes of just Jay. (Saw him in February, no opener)
Im a sucker for impressions and he's my favorite impressionist guy of all time. His wife can't write that. His delivery, his weird inflections, his timing, I love how he builds shit throughout a show. He is a master audience manipulator. He'll reveal all kinds of touching, personal shit that might not even be funny but it's such a legit glimpse into his life and he's so sincere about it, you can't not be hooked by it. Overall he's just one of my favorite performers, of anything. He's not just a guy that tells jokes, to me.
A stand up special of his might be a whole other animal. Im not really a fan of specials, honestly so I haven't seen it. See him in a small club if you ever get the chance, I bet you'd dig him so much more.
Cool. I mean I can't judge something off your own experience, only things we have all seen. To put Jay Mohr in a top 3 stand ups working today just seemed odd to me especially after watching the special I watched. As for impressions does he do more than Harvey Keitel and Christopher Walken? Him and Kevin Pollack seem to love bringing them out the bag.
I said Bill Burr is the best comic working today. I said those other guys were my personal favorites. One's business, the other is personal.
And Im not just saying it off my own experience, Jay's smaller club shows are different than his specials. His specials he's casting the widest net possible for the most people, it's more commercial. In a club, it's like him and you. He does a lot more niche stuff that's closer to his heart, he knows people there are fans/in on a lot of the inside jokes/references, you know? He'll just start randomly doing Norm and Colin and Vos and not even explain who they are, he's way more at home and I think probably funnier.

i almost like chelsea peretti. parts of her standup are quite palatable, but other parts make me cringe. its a real shame.

Todd Barry, Todd Barry, and Todd Barry. And if I had an honorable mention it'd probably be Tig Notaro.

I love Tig Notaro's bit about faking breast cancer.

I think the OP was going for all personal choices but hey man, to each his own as the say.

I gave a little of both, because I'm a well rounded individual.
