Jim Norton is a master of improv, but an abysmal writer.

His stand up jokes are just terrible, seriously.. Yet he fires out such quick one-liners on almost a daily basis. Why doesn't he just improvise his stand up more?

it's not that his stand up jokes are terrible they're just topical. whereas Louie is writing what is considered "evergreen" material. which means it stands the test of time and is just a good observation. Jimmy's style is to make jokes about events and within months they've aged and he seems like a bad comic. i guarantee he is a killer during any live show.

Watched Jimmy live and he is absolutely hilarious, he definitely killed.

Exactly this. The worst part is that he's racked up so much timeless material on O&A. If "Jimmy hates trees" and "Jimmy hates the ocean" were in a standup special, let alone Chip and Uncle Paul, he would be a millionaire by now from merchandise sales alone.

I've seen him a couple times and he always kills.

Me too. He's my favorite comic. He's the guy that started it all for me, honestly.

I think he's actually a very good writer. His books both made me laugh out loud, and his Time articles are not bad.

The stand-up is a different story.

How many times have you seen him perform?

Ive watched all of his specials which are the best parts of a years worth of stand up filtered into one hour. That Espresso De Norton is not nearly as good as his live improved banter

So a-zeroooooo. Agreed he always kind of locks up when he's on camera but he's noticeably better on his latest special. Still not mindblowing but like most comics of his ILK he's better making a room full of other comedians laugh than he is standing there with a microphone.

Everyone says Patrice was like that, too. Not that his stand-up wasn't hilarious but he was even funnier when it was just him and a room of people he was comfortable with.

I have an issue with this, if you're going to spend $50 on ticket and lets be honest with parking, spouse/friend , food... you're out on $300 night easy chances are you're not going to hate what you get. It's similar to everyone loving their new car or their new TV because admitting you got bamboozled by mediocre show/product is difficult for people. IMHO the proper way to judge standup is with specials and as much as I love jimmy his aren't all that great when compared to his peers. But like this thread hit spot on, his one liners in that O&A original setting are unreal, I wish him best of luck, but he should somehow try to monetize that skill he has. how? IDK, I'm just a dumbass listener.

He's not the top comedian out there but he's very good at what he does and he's very accomplished. The thing about the guys who are the best is that they make it look easy, and it's fucking not

Pretty much, anyone is going to look like shit compared to pre-2011 Louie and pre-2011 Patrice. In the grand scheme of things, Jimmy is a good lad.

He might benefit from the way Bill Burr does his stand up, where he basically has some vague topics that he addresses but also feels the room out and improvs a bit.

Jimmy's stand up is amazing, but it'd be great if he could add some of that quickfire insanity somehow, because, my god, the hilarious stuff he says on the show sometimes is incredible.

He could stand to learn a few things from Burr such as how to be an alpha male and how to become enriched by going to Europe. Upvote if you agree.

Artie Lange was the same way. Except Artie's stand up is alot worse.

Watched Jimmy live and he is absolutely hilarious, he definitely killed.
