Were O&A always just "inflated" by Opie "pumping things/ situations up"? For instance in 2007 how many pests were really fucking with Howard's "free lunch" shit (did he even plan to have a free lunch?) and press conferences for his move to Sirius?

Just going through old episodes because like many of you I can't stomach the new show. Listened to the Vos and Regan episode from the other day (first show in weeks after being an everydayer) and I didn't even get a chuckle... and Vos is one of my favorite guests.

Anyway, Opie has made me laugh a few times in the 2007 season (I'm only maybe 12 episodes in). Mostly when he is mean to the callers. I love that shit. But, I'm wondering, how popular were O&A during this time period? It's considered a golden age for O&A, but how many "pests" did they actually have? And how much was just radio bullshit?

All radio is radio bullshit.

is it the one where stern wont show his face cause he knew ona were in the audience, so he called security and had them removed? i remember opie explains it to louis like they were just there to watch the show, but the more he talks the more he reveals that they planted a bunch of pests in there to fuck with stern, opie was so passionate about the whole thing and even called stern a faggot. i guess he mad cause stern stopped their little ruse

They did pretty good in the Homeless Shopping Spree saga. If you haven't heard that, I recommend putting it next on your list. Pests deliver, laffs are had, it's a celebration. And the media of course hamstrings themselves.

The WNEW years were their golden age. They just had ok ratings in 2007.

Having big A read the fucking news during prime morning drive time was a travesty. Nothing but dead air and stuttering with zero information and zero funny provided.

I don't hate big A for it, I fucking hate opie for pushing it.

Same here. I couldnt stand them having big a read the news. Ive heard opie say shit like "as long as we get a reaction, good or bad, we did our jobs", but this is bullshit in this situation. My reaction everyone of the dozens of times they had big a read was to change the station or fast forward.

i literally fell asleep every time. it was early enough in the morning, and then you have silent radio... i just passed out when my mind no longer needed to register anything entertaining.

You gotta admit that Louis "Twitchles" Centanni was a regular laugh riot, tho

I guess it depends how you define popular. They were systematically cancelled on every FM station due to low ratings, but at that point they were talking to a very large audience compared to today's standards.

Here's a video of people protesting their XM suspension https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zk9mG33F-dQ

Not bad compared to the three people protest Anthony's firing attracted.

At their FM peak I think the estimate was something around 1 million listeners total. That's probably the peak of the show when it comes to listeners.

I always wondered how popular they were during the period when they did FM/walkover/XM. CBS did try promoting them and they even had their faces on the sides of NYC buses at that time. And the CBS connection got them on Letterman, which seems inconceivable now. There was even a day when Tom Chiusano brought them to a golf outing w/ advertisers at a country club in Westchester.

The problem was that they just couldn't sustain any of it. The walkover was an interesting case, that was a weird business necessity they could have turned into something creative. But it never really worked. I remember they once had Vos go into a Starbucks and just start doing standup, and there were other instances where they at least tried to do something. But it seemed to mostly be just hassling homeless people or commenting on the hotness of some Wackbagger's girlfriend.

Wait, a Wackbagger had a hot girlfriend?

It was a glorious time. Wackbaggers were all over the place and it was before Appalachin and before Crazy Anthony decided to take on a boss and start a war.

Stern came to sirius in 06 though right?

Popularity probably peaked with Sex For Sam.
