The truth about the LA Comedy Scene: It is filled to the brim with SJWs each trying outdo each other and show how progressive they are. Epicenter of this garbage is NerdMelt.

This is the crowd that spineless Joe DeRosa was trying to fit in with when he first got to LA.

The two epicenters for normal, non-shitty comedians are The Comedy Store and Rogan's scene at The Ice House.

Of course, even those LA comedians are nowhere nearly as good as NY comics because they only get like 1/4th the weekly stage time to develop their sets.

LA comedy is completely different.

Basically you have a bunch of people who are doing comedy because they're trying to get on television. Due to that, they're hyper conscious of pissing off the wrong people.

That's why Charlie Sheen's meltdown was so remarkable - he basically risked his entire future because he refused to be politically correct.

(I've lived near L.A. for 33 years)

Exactly, Ill never forget a perfect example of a West Coast Comic bombing on the East Coast. I was at the taping of "Down and Dirty with Jim Norton" in Jersey, and Jim brought out some Comedian from Cali, not sure if it was SF or LA, and he had some jokes that just fell flat on the crowd and he only got was Anthony Cumia fake laughs. I remember one of his jokes was about Mexicans and the typical "gardening and mowing lawn joke", and it didnt get many laughs at all. We had an intermission after that and even the suburban white people were saying how those jokes dont work around here since "working like a mexican", is basically a compliment in the East Coast.

Working like a Mexican is a compliment here in San Diego too. That joke just sucked.

In NY, I've been to the cellar and UCB and its not really noticeably different as far as audience is concerned. It's a mix. But in LA, it is completely different. The crowd at the comedy store or Hollywood improv vs an alt room there, completely different crowd in every way. I was surprised to see it in person when I was there

Have lived on the West Coast my whole life. The thought of Tough Crowd era Comedy Cellar comedy fading away makes me sick. East Coast comedy had balls. Thanks for getting my hopes up. We're fucked.

But hes a mexi jew his repercussions were minor.

In no way is Charlie Sheen jewish. His last name is Estevez haha

His mothers a kyke. Hes 100 percent jew.

First of all, his mom being jewish would not make him 100%. And his mother was a strict southern Baptist and his dad was a Catholic. I think you're trying to make something out of nothing buddy

First of all, suck my dick

" Here's where it gets confusing — we don't know who her father was,” Sheen said in the phone interview. “But she is, in fact, Jewish. So I guess that would make me Jewish, and my children Jewish.” He added: “And Brooke [Mueller], my ex-wife is Jewish."

You can't just provide a quote with no proof that it was actually said. What interview is that even from? And his ex-wife being Jewish has nothing to do with him being jewish. Fuckin neo-nazi just trying to come up with some bullshit haha ain't gonna work on me

I saw him say it during all the heat he had when he called Jew producer of his TV show a Jew just like half this sub did. Eat shit kyke.

You totally reminded me of why your whole point is invalid. Why would a Jew have to defend himself from being anti-Semitic? I saw him defend the chuck lorre real name thing and never once did he use being Jewish as a defense. He just said he was fucking around. If I was Jewish and was being accused of anti-semitism the first thing I would do was pull the jew card out

Hahahaha go cry to your Rabbi

ad hom, you lose faggot

You're Jewish, that means you lose. Bahahahahahaha glad I ruined your day.

keep crackin yourself up cunt, and keep convincing yourself everyone who calls you a cunt is jewish

So jewish...

Sad Jew is sad hahahahahahaha.

Didn't know there were any Jewish black people outside of New York but congratulations, jumps to conclusions guy

K

We are fortunate in this subreddit to have so many professional comedians who can lend their expertise and educated opinion on topics

We can judge what is funny or not asshole, do you have to be a contractor or roofing specialist to see a leak in your roof and know it needs to be fixed?

I know what is funny or not, and my not being a comedian has nothing to do with discounting our opinions.

Calm the fuck down Burr

You have to impress the fans as a comic, not the other comics.

You have to impress the fans as a comic, not the other comics.

Exactly. We don't want someone to become a comic just to critique other comics.

(Andy Kindler)

You do realize that "funny" is completely opinion based right. Just because you find it funny or not funny does not mean that it is the same with the entire world. Sounds like someone has quite the ego.

Yep, comedy is completely subjective. That's why all comedians are equally good. Everybody is equal. Nothing is better than anything else.

See your trying to be a smart ass, but you still are a little dumb fuck. You are actually right someone could enjoy carrot top as much as you guys enjoy whatever comedian you haven't started hating yet. There can be more popular comedians that are more universal, but that doesn't make them better it just means they appeal to a bigger audience.

Some people enjoy McDonald's just as much as I enjoy a medium-rare steak. See the problem with your retarded argument?

No what's the problem because you enjoy a steak and I want a fucking mystery meat burger doesn't mean the steak is better. It means YOU like the steak better. This is all fucking opinion why is that so hard to understand.

Get out of here with your post-modernist bs. When everything is subjective then why even discuss anything?

A good steak is objectively better than a burger from McDonald's.

Because it's good to see other people's views dip shit

Why is it good? If it's all just opinions and it's all subjective then why even hear other the opinions of others?

Because you could find a new comedian that you might have never heard of, our you could show someone else a comedian they would have never heard of. It's like that overused saying if everyone was the same life would be boring

Boooooo

You're welcome.

DUDE! I'm on Reddit, dude! I got my flair, boom. I got my karma and my trophies. BOOM!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE

This is why I'm surprised Ari Shaffir has been allowed to have any career at all. Maybe he gets a jew pass.

Maybe?

he moved to new york last year and his comedy really tightened up. before that he was well known because of Rogans podcast but now Ari's comedy is better than Rogans.

LA gets a much worse rap than it deserves. Im from New York, I do stand up here all week, I go to shows constantly. There is definitely an element of what you guys are saying here, but it's much less severe than anyone would make it think. I don't go to Nerdmelt much, so maybe it is worse there but I've seen Burr and Madrigal and Segura do live podcasts there, and they was no SJW-ing going on, and the crowd was loving it.

Thing about LA is, at least half the comics here are from east coast, mid west, rust belt cities, have the same miserable sense of humor and awful childhoods. I much prefer NY/east coast people, attitudes and humor and really would rather be doing comedy there. (My sense of humor doesn't gel 100% w/west coast people) It's just that whole goddamn "winter time" thing. 26 of those in Buffalo was quite enough. But honestly the comedy scene here is fucking amazing, if I didn't have to work I could see a show almost every night of the week, there's so many amazing and brutal comics. I mean just Ian Edwards & Rick Ingrahm alone at the Comedy Store each week are enough to bring LA's sunshine down 20% with their fucking rotten-ness.

And to give DeRosa at least a smidgeon of credit, when he first moved here I think two years ago around Christmas, I saw him every chance I could and he was brutal, he just shit all over LA and hipsters and how much he hated it here and it was really goddamn funny, I loved it. He'd see me every time and go "Do you think I was too mean?" afterward, it always made me laugh. He did Comedy Living Room once (they do shows in a guy's house, it's great) and just fucking roasted everyone, and actually went a bit over the top and kind of bombed. After that one he was like "Ok, I think I better scale back maybe a little..." Joe is an angry boy.

I haven't seen him do stand up in a quite a while, so maybe he's a softie now or doing a Hollywood thing. But the handful of times I saw him he was mean and pretty funny.

The story behind comedy living room is amazing

I love that place. There's always so many hot chicks there too. It's like a college house party, with stand ups.

I'm in San Diego. How do I see a show there?

Follow them on Twitter, they post when they have them. Im sure they have their own website too with updates, if you're not on Twitter.

Make sure it's at the actual house though, because sometimes they get too big and they have "Comedy Living Room At The Improv," which makes zero fucking sense.

Totally agreed.

I make it out to the Comedy Store nearly every other week, and while there's the standard fare of shitty comedians, there are regulars who are fantastic. Rick Ingraham is always awesome and fucking brutal. And I love Brody Stevens for how utterly bizarre and enjoyable his sets are.

You had me up til Brody Stevens. Damn it, so close. I have an intolerable hatred of that fuck.

But I get your point. I love when Rick makes fun of the Laugh Factory. He laid into this bachelorette party so hard last Sunday, it was awesome. They fucking hated him. With his weird little T Rex arms, and his two sizes too big for him t shirt. I love that man. Did you ever see this Lowe's commercial with him in it? It's so stupid, but I love it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=so1oeLwkzhw

I wouldn't say it's just a west coast thing though. The problem is that comedians have set up a safespace/hugbox where they won't criticize another comic, no matter how bad they are, because that awful comic might get a show and they could get a role if they are friends with the person. Another reason they wont criticize is that it opens them up to criticism, self-preservation is a powerful thing.

Look at Andy Kindler who is objectively talentless and unfunny, he'll always be protected by cowards like Norton and DiPaolo because they need work.

In regards to Kindler/DiPaolo, I think the two of them came up together and are actually friends. They're on very different ends of the spectrum, but friends regardless.

Except if you were Patrice O neal. Kevin Hart perfectly described the time Patrice pissed off every LA comic within a matter of minutes.

Edit: Found the story. Starts around 2:15 mark if link doesnt work

You got a link to this story?

I remember losing a lot of respect for Patrice when he wouldn't join in the jokes about Stern's daughter's play. He and Burr were too scared. But Burr already proved himself to be a coward when he wouldn't even criticize Carlin's terrible special, even O&A had to talk about how bad it was and they don't go after comics either.

How would that make you lose respect for Patrice? Burr and Patrice had zero reason to go after Stern, let alone his daughter. Just because they did the O&A show, which they were never paid for, didn't mean they inherited all of O&A's feuds. The Stern beef was O&A's issue, they themselves understood when guests didn't want to get involved.

It wasn't about the feud, it's about the fact that they would have went after anyone else but they were too scared because she was Howard's daughter.

When Kevin hart talked about Patrice slapping some comics notebook out of his hands I lost it

You literally just brought up the one comedian best known for criticizing other comics as your example of the safespace/hugbox.

You make a good point in a way. I actually agree with Kindler on his stuff about Louis CK and some of his stuff about Ricky Gervais, but he's still a full blown SJW.

And that doesn't mean anything when the fact remains that the vast majority of comics are too scared to criticize each other.

Look at Andy Kindler who is objectively talentless and unfunny, he'll always be protected by cowards like Norton and DiPaolo because they need work.

I don't like people who get fame from having friends as opposed to having talent.

The Comedy Store is an oasis in a sea of shit.

Jewlywood fags gonna fag.

West coast comics are definitely a bunch of SJW's and all trying to be too polite and not offend. The difference between a Ca comic and a NY comic is astronomical.

Seems like it's at a critical mass now. Like someone here mentioned not too long ago, this is a fad. Here's hoping we'll see its decline soon enough.

The biggest problem here and much more emblematic of what OP is saying are the women comics, I find. In particular, the ones that were born and raised in LA. THOSE are the crybabies. I don't know if the gashes on the E coast are funnier than the ones we have, but for the most part they are fucking god awful, and "offended" by everything. They're the only groaners and tsk-ers at any shows.

A few weeks ago I had a bit about how girls from this generation are so into getting choked and slapped during sex. This one open mic has a lot of girl comics for some reason. Girl #1 after me completely misheard what I said, and made all kinds of snide jokes towards me saying I liked to "choke and hit women," period, totally out of context. The other girls at the mic smell blood in the water, and every SINGLE 'comic' that got up had to make some reference to my set, which by the 3rd broad pretty much boiled down to "Im a rapist." And of course, like every unimaginaitve, unfunny cunt, every single set up began with "So, you guys...."

Stay in the kitchen, cunts.

Agreed, dude. The female Mic-ers (they aren't comics) just take up quality time, trying to make their pain into something we have to listen to. And it never makes me gaffaw, not even chuckle.

But what's this? some guy named Uncle is attempting to create original humor with edgy, topical observations? ATTACK AND MISHEAR HIS ACT!!!

"Anyone else a stay at home mom-ster? Am I right ladies?"

Yeah, it's awful. I can't tell you how many girls get on stage and start their fucking set with "So I didn't write anything this week..." 1. WHY didn't you write anything? Because you thought "I'll just get up and act like a cutie patootie, and everyone will love it?" and 2. Why would you fucking even tell us that. Flappers is notorious for "that chick," I swear to god.

I noticed it's a thing with girl mic'r's in particular. Like "I just want attention, fuck the art and craft of stand up that 90% of this room spent all week/hours working on."

But I thought saying "guys" to a mixed crowd was a microaggression

LOL, last line is gold.

Los Angeles is bizarro world. I've spent some time there and it is just maddening.

The only word I can use to describe the people is "vapid." It's a self-congratulatory community built on chasing the social cause du jour.

It's Monday, we're all about free range chickens! Let's tweet about it with the hashtag "freemychicken.'

It's Tuesday, we're all anti-GMO's - let's Instagram our organic lunches.

This mentality is pervasive and can be found throughout the society. They involve themselves in these causes to justify their existences. The comics are no better; it's sickening.

That's in every major city not just LA. It's in New York too. I've lived in both cities for an equal number of years and Manhattan has PLENTY of "let's save the world!" types who jump from cause to cause. The vast majority of people in LA are fat, poor, functionally illiterate dopes who litter at the beach and skip their smog inspections. The entertainmem industry and the "absolutely fabulous" crowd make up a small percentage.

Can you dipshits, just once, take the Fox News direct feed cable out of your asses and just talk about things without sounding like you're auditioning for Redeye?

I had to google NerdMelt, I thought it was so whacky new comedian. LA comedy is mostly awful. I don't know why Rogan talks it up so much...maybe the nostalgia

I remember someone on this sub asking why Jim does not do sets out there.

I know why, they will not get him, he is a little too raw and honest.

Outside of Stanhope, LA comedy is sanitized, look at me , cast me in a sitcom, shit. Keep it safe, so I am palatable by hyper liberal SJWs, and upper middle class Cali activists.

LA comedy is shit.

Why did you bring up Stanhope? He's not an LA comedian, he's from AZ and tours endlessly. It's not like he's doing sets in LA each week.

I know why, they will not get him, he is a little too raw and honest.

Because he tells the same tranny jokes every chance he gets, he's "little too raw and honest"?

As an Angeleno, I agree with you. I think the problem with comics here is that a lot of them aren't really funny outside of their rehearsed material. Comedy is usually just one aspect of them, as they're usually writers and actors on the side of it.

Whatever the case, and perhaps a lot of it is just the culture of L.A. which is not very confrontational, they are not as quick witted or naturally funny as many east coast comedians are. Rich Vos talks about some of these differences on Rogan's show.

As an Angeleno

yyyuck.

yuckerino :)

Wadda you a fawwwkin one legged cherub or summthin?

LA comedy is based on an "I'm better than you" attitude (see Kumail, Bo Burnham, etc.) while NY comedy is self deprication (Louis C.K, Jim Norton, etc.)

Bo Burnham is pretty hilarious and does a shit ton of politically incorrect shit. His stuff can be really smart and high brow but he also does dumb shit and dick jokes and a shit ton of racist and homophobic shit. Not sure he applies here.

Wow you sound like a real insider!

Most NYC comics are just as bland and inoffensive as LA. "O&A guests" are not the entirity of the New York comedy scene.

[deleted]

I look at the schedule for the Irvine Improv and it's about once every six months that an act worth seeing comes through there. The rest is just shiiiiiit...

[deleted]

Do the following people perform there? Sarah Silverman Joe DeRosa Andy Kindler Kamail Nanjaininedisllnjeidibnskler Pretty sure the answer is yes to all. At least Sarah Silverman is funny.

Much rather live in LA then New York. Can't wait to go back this summer.

Never really thought about it but it explains Derosa's actions definitely. Patrice & Bawby had their run-ins with LA people I believe. I guess Derosa wanted the money you get from political signalling more than work on his act.

What the fuck are you talking about? I go to NerdMelt shows all the time, and it's just club comics trying out new material. There's absolutely nothing SJW-ish about the comedy. Maybe the CROWD doesn't go along with certain topics, since they're mostly 18-25 year-olds, but you're making it seem that act after act is just making a speech about bring down rape culture or something. It's just as chalk-full of ironic racism, rape and abortion jokes that you'd find anywhere else. And Joe DeRosa was already Patton Oswalt's opening act waaay before he ever appeared on O&A, so he's not "trying to fit in" with the LA crowd. If anything, he tried to fit in with the O&A crowd.

Derosa definitely has changed. It could also be his ego growing and him thinking he's the next Louie Ck so he's more interested in being arty & "real" than funny. Either way, if u listen to his work and you don't think it gets significantly weaker as he released album after album I don't think you're being truthful

I'm mostly just remembering being surprised many years ago that they had DeRosa on the show in the first place, since he was part of the "alt"-scene that they were always making fun of. Now people are accusing him of "trying to fit in" in LA, when he's doing the exact kinds of shows that he always has.

He clearly was never like, a Tough Crowd/Cellar comic but his first Comedy Central half hour was good. His 2nd was dog shit, where he closed with a bit where he badly faked "tearing up a bit" to push an obvious punchline about Gallagher that everyone saw coming. All his YouTube videos are terrible. I don't know if it's LA or what but there's a decline. I think it's ego more than LA though. I saw him in an interview saying the reason he releases so many CDs is that he gets bored of the material. Maybe he's bored cuz it's boring! While a better comic would work and craft the material for years til it's great, DeRosa is like "this shit is good enough, let me record it"

Basically the O&A crowd was unaware of him so we only knew him from trying to fit in with the O&A crowd of comedians. He was never very good but I chalked that up to him being a newer comic. Now that we've seen who he really is I think it's safe to assume he's always been this way but just played pretend when he was in New York.

There are 13 shows a week at the Nerdmelt theater, and he's calling it the bastion of SJWs because the co-host of ONE of those shows made one offhanded remark about being against racism. The creator of this thread has made three comments on reddit. Two of them contained the phrase "SJW", the other was a call for a Pakistani Muslim to speak out against Indian rape trains.

[deleted]

I don't get it. Do you support Indian rape trains?

[deleted]

You sure are a butthurt britcuck. They should speak out because it's only Muslims who have rape gangs, circumcise women in 2015, lose their shit over cartoons, and behead people in Western countries. But hey, it's your neck, not mine.

Ah, the ramblings of a racist. Hilarious and sad.

Bend over ginger cuck. Time for your progressiveness!

It's spelled committed, you barbaric thundercunt.

[deleted]

[deleted]

The thing is though, if we're being honest with ourselves, Anthony's views on black people aren't wrong.

Dude anyone with a high school diploma can see through his bullshit.

All I know is that the whole anti SJW shtick is as bad as the sjw themselves. Seriously, you guys are more annoying than them.

Those goddamn social justice warriors filling everyone's head with progressive ideas. Who the fuck do they think they are?!

True progress ain't that SJW shit.
