Newsweek & Respect

I just finished reading the transcript of the interviews that Anthony, Jim and Opie did with the reporter from Newsweek. I certainly appreciate the candor demonstrated by all of them; they did not have to do the interview but I certainly appreciate that they did.

I really admire Jim's commitment to remaining neutral in this situation and the fact that he is not afraid to speak up with the truth as he sees it even if it might contrast something Opie or Anthony said. I know how difficult it is to experience the drama associated with two close friends breaking up with each other or get divorced from each other; I imagine that what Jimmy's dealing with is far more challenging than that. Jimmy's behavior speaks volumes about the kind of person and friend that he is and both Opie and Anthony are truly lucky to have a friend like that. I really admire how Jim has handled this.

I understand Anthony's frustration and the many issues that he still seeks clarity, but I am disappointed by his stubbornness about being the one to initiate a dialogue to seek that clarity with Opie. I understand the position he was in and the abandonment he felt but his refusal to initiate communication with Opie impacted us fans the most because it served as a roadblock to them exploring other options come October and the chance to make an informed decision about the viability of continuing the show on other platforms.

I do hold Opie equally accountable for the lack of communication and outreach to Anthony.

I really believe that a huge missed opportunity whcih would have both opened the lines of communication and explored the possibility to continue the show would have been for Anthony to have researched other platforms and presented a plan to Opie and Jim that included financial and subscriber estimates as well as estimated expenses for studio, bandwidth and staff. That way they would understand the reality and potential. Why do I place the burden for that on Anthony? Two reasons: No one is more knowledgeable about setting up a studio & bandwidth costs and since he was the one fired it just makes sense.

Otherwise I pretty much agreed with Anthony's comments and my positive view of him did not change.

I appreciated Opie's comments the most because for the first time in a long time I perceived him as being honest and respect that he admitted the mistakes he had made. I do think that he should have initiated communication with Anthony in the months between his termination and signing a new contract; for two guys who have been talking on the radio for 20 years they really have shitty communication skills.

My main takeaway from the three interviews is respect; respect for all of them individually and respect for their decision. Let's be honest, following Anthony's termination if either Opie or Anthony really wanted to continue the Opie and Anthony Show in October then one of them would have initiated the dialogue to explore that option but the fact that neither of them did makes it clear to me that continuing the show was not critically important to either of them and I respect that decision.

TLDR.Me

I do think that he (Opie) should have initiated communication with Anthony in the months between his termination and signing a new contract

Why? Anthony had his new show running 3 days after it was announced that he was fired. That sends a pretty clear message to Opie, no? Anthony's the reason Anthony was fired, he should have been the one to make contact.

I will agree with what I think your larger point is though; it's insane that they never really spoke to each other after everything happened.

As for respecting them, yeah, I lost a lot of respect for all of them through this whole thing...except for Jim who seems to be the only rational person in the group.

If my former Co host started doing his own show before talking to me about continuing I'd have the same thought process as Opie. It's not his fault Anthony assumed Opie was going to retire, no matter what he perceived from past negotiations.

*Opie acted off of definitive actions taken by Anthony, Anthony acted based off of assumptions.
