I think their are 2 reasons why Opie was defended:

1-the show was good. So if the product is ultimately good then it's logical to defend all aspects. It's like, when a movie is great you probably don't realize certain flaws that you should've

2-when the show would do proactive bits he did seem to be behind it. Like when the weirdos & freaks would come on and do stunts I will absolutely give him credit that he got that shit going. However he hasn't done stuff like that in many years. He didn't have much talent but what he did have suffered from the curse of the family man. When he started doing that "this is the OTHER side of Opie, I'm not a psychopath, I'm a father who likes sunsets", he was fucking done

This is correct 100%. Too many people on here look back at their earlier days (WAAF, WNEW) through the modern lens. They don't get the context of what seems really hack now was actually edgy for terrestrial radio back then. Ant has always been "the funny guy" but Opie was "the asshole guy" and brought a lot of laughs through cringe situations and stunts. During the XM era the show evolved into something different, and Opie made the drastically wrong choice of trying to soften his image. He isn't able to joke around like Jim or Ant, so he basically voluntarily cut out what he brought to the table.

Bingo! If he hadn't become so castrated after his marriage to Lynsi among many other things that gradually happened during the XM era, I think I'd have more respect for him. He at least contributed something to the show back then and knew his place as you said. This new Opie is a fucking sellout fruitcake and a pussy (it's like his version of Hamptons Howie almost) compared to what he once was back in the 'NEW days or the early days at XM. It's nothing like the whole Destroyer persona he had set up for himself or any of the other stunts that he did too when he blathers on about his kids for like a 3rd of the whole show now.

He was still good with Jocktober. Even if Opie is a hack DJ himself at heart, he still knows how to call it out and provide insight into the minds of other hack DJs while Ant and Jim did color commentary.

I can't remember a single interesting or entertaining observation Opie made during any jocktober. I remember Ant, Jimmy, and Sam being funny.

I think Opie's OK. I think a lot of his observations like why x promo is bad for marketing and whatnot add to the conversation. I think Jocktober is one of the few times where Opie could successfully add things into the mix for the other guys to bounce off of.

I defended him too man. But now he steamrolls Jimmy's every joke to talk about himself, or make a TERRIBLE impression with the same generic voice for EVERY impression he does. Or he wants to make his mundane stories more interesting so he says FUCKING every few words and Ant used to be a good sport and play along. I listen to a lot of old O&A and you can even hear it back then to a degree. Listen to Erock cell phone podcast, Ant is dropping gold and being funny while Opie blames Ant for making jokes.

The worst part of him to me is that his idea of good radio is just taking any topic and feigning a really obviously fake disgust or bewilderment about it. He doesn't give a shit about anything at all, and has no ability or desire to put thought into anything either. If no one bites on his "what's that all about???" bullshit, he pretends it was a joke and moves onto the next topic. The rest of the show involves using shitty catchphrases like "a little taste" and "byootaful". The only listenable bits are certain Jim/Chip moments and those are growing fewer and further between.

I'd pretty much rather listen to Stern and Robin, the senile fucks, talking about how great they are and how much they have the world figured out.

I used to be the "he steers the show" guy. Blindly. I used to defend him quite a bit. I was wrong.

I got into OnA only a few years ago and never understood what the opester's purpose was: (no interview skills, no jokes, no content, just yelling, hanging up on callers and complaining) but since the show's been around for so long, with so many faithful fans I figured it was my fault for not seeing his "talent" and assumed the steering the ship thing was real.

I read all of jhohcables diatribe..and found it concise and geniuine feeling behind it.. I got on the o&a bandwagon late in the game because I was a huge Patrice fan..and loved the shows where jim and colin and Patrice even vos would beat the shit outta eachother..I remember ant being a huge part of it and opie just well being there..i never had much of an opionon on him but after the whole greggshells bombshell alotta stuff made sense to me..id go back and listen to classic o and a thinking wow I missed a huge moment in time..now I tune in for just jimmy..and gotta say its damn hard getting through theshows..hearing..You get a lil taste?? buuutifulll..I gotta say I look at the show as a flaling animal waiting to be put outta its misery..i wish there was some way he would go away and jim and ant could reunite. what made me see the "destroyer as fuckin human garbage was the whole stomping the homeless guys cake..i mean on a human level that was sucha a dick thing to do..bit, planned, spur of the moment whatever..it summed up the whole opie living legend asshole to me.
