Everything Opie ever learned about radio was from the radio hack king, Brother Wease. Opie loves all that douchey morning rock jock radio stuff. He really felt like a rebel when he did that stuff. That's why he created shit like "the O&A virus" and other garbage. He shits on Denny for loving the old school style of radio, but he thinks he's Joe Cool with his rock jock morning zoo bullshit.
I've been re-listening to the show from the XM years on and it's embarrassing how Opie try to play the cool guy constantly. He also kept trying to keep it like their terrestrial show even though it was nothing like that anymore. Ant and Jim were adapting but Opie couldn't at first. He's such a square.
They were playing "Stoner Spelling Bee" which really wasn't very good on XM. I can see why it'd work on FM but it just felt super lame. Opie at one point asked a guy if he was gonna "take another hit of pot" before spelling the next word. Spoken like someone who has probably never even seen weed in person before. Also, he was obsessed with sex during these first few months. When you don't have to dance around what can be censored, it's just boring to hear a woman rub a phone across her pubic hair and it's also just as boring to hear people have sex over the phone.
But all of this is the essence of Opie. A rock shock jock that somehow found himself on a platform that he couldn't keep up with. Ant and Jim joined in on their bits it just lacked anything compelling. I'm really glad the show evolved to just being straight talk most of the time but Opie makes sure these early episodes are bit filled constantly.
tl;dr: Opie is terrible and has always been a hack rock jock douche.

Opie loves beds and rejoiners without lyrics. So funny to listen over the years to jimmy railing against it and opie sheepishly having to say he liked it. Most of the time he was silent on the issue.
