Opie was never a jock. He wanted to be. All those basketball camps he took got him riding the bench on an all white basketball team.

Opie is a wannabe more than anything. If he's a part of any club he's a part of that. He doesn't seem to be happy with anything he has. Hence the constant made up stories, the youtube viral-video shtick, the constant need to interject himself in any story or have the stories directly connect to him, and all the other inanity he gets up to. its kinda sad.

I think frat boys are obnoxious, but those demographics sounds relatively similar to me, minus the outcast part. I've never really known social outcasts to act like that. When I was growing up, most were more reserved and laidback. In my experience, it was mostly popular kids that did that type stuff. Or at least those that filled some type of niche.

I don't really see any of the O&A guys as nerds. They weren't popular kids, but they weren't nerds like Patton Oswalt or some alt comedians probably were.

You don't need to psychologize someone to find out why they aren't funny. Some people just aren't. Just like some people suck at sports and others don't have any artistic talent.

I had a foot more in the frat/jock camp... and those people have a sense of humor and wouldn't cry if you busted their balls. I doubt Opie was all that popular in his frat, the guys who aren't still friends years later with anyone from their frat are usually the guys you regretted giving a bid.
