The prior violence was the inspiration for violent art and even with inspiration that great, gun crime rates are down the toilet in the Western World, the biggest producers of "naughty" entertainment.
The reason why violent video games have a decreasing effect on violent crime is because they are popular with the most violent and criminal segment of the country: Men of all races aged 16 to 34.
Grand Theft Auto V comes out, millions of those people are indoors committing fake crime instead of outdoors committing the real deal.
If there was a game called "Go Outside and Do Things" and people played that "game" as much as video games, violent crime would go through the roof.
