He wants to be top dog He wants his sidekick to be groveling in gratitude. He wants his sidekick to be too afraid of management to talk to them about anything. He wants his sidekick to not only feel less equal, he wants him to feel like he doesn't even deserve to be there. Opie finally has what he's always wanted.

Yes. Opie thought he would be THE GUY now that Ant is gone. His dumbass probably thought he would take over for Howard finally.

This is what I was thinking...he knows everyone loves the chemistry and joking with Ant and Jim and he was losing his relevancy with Ant learning how to conduct an actual radio show (the shows without Opie early on were pretty chaotic, but got better near the end).
