Are all the other fan sites really hard on Opie like this site is? I don't know. I'm so used to just reading everything about the show here. The only positive things I ever read about Opie is what he retweets on Twitter

The whole model of satellite radio is only sustained by the sweetheart deal that puts them in new cars. They paid Howard half-a-billion to abandon millions of listeners that couldn't or wouldn't choose to pay for something they used to get for free.

And let's don't forget, they saved $3 million last July by firing Ant and I doubt more than $250,000 went to Opie's and Jim's new deals.

I can't imagine the ad revenue is down with all the fucking commercials these days.

Management decided to re-up the show after hearing a couple of months of Tits and Paycheck. This may be the most damning and befuddling part of it all.

I get the contracts Rosie, Oprah, Martha Stewart, Eminem - big names giving the platform clout. I don't get the re-signing of the show. Outside of fans present and past, these guys have little name recognition. Management is either clueless, doesn't listen or are too lazy to find a show to replace these two.

I don't think Sirius operates exactly like terrestrial does. They TRY to sell advertising, because that's what Mel does - he maximizes every minute of every hour for ad potential, he bragged he was going to do it when he took over, and that's when the channel's ads became more important than in the XM era, when they'd forget to do them for the entire show.

Sirius gets x amount of dollars from subs. That's their base of operations. Ad money is pretty much bonus on top of that. Do you think the hack ads they get on Opie Raqio amounts to enough to pull the plug? If that were true, half the channels on the service would have been pulled, a while ago.

That's why they wanted a million up front for the tour, or the cruise ship. They knew they wouldn't get a big name company like Coke or Jaegermeister or Harley to come in with corporate sponsorships to underwrite that cost, so they wanted it from O&A. That's how shit like that works. That's how big bands pay the startup and operating costs of the big tours, and how Sharon finances the Ozfest shows.

The ad money probably pays for the extra producers and workers on the show, as most of the other channels don't require that many people. But it's not Howard ad money, and it's not big league radio money. It's just enough to pay that little shit Sam 24k a year, and the rest is the normal operating budget for the channel. That's why East Side Dave didn't get hired, Ron and Fez make less in advertising. Sirius pays for Ron, Fez, one producer, and the rest they gotta earn.
