Do you think Jimmy will ever have a successful show of his own?
4 2015-01-13 by [deleted]
Jimmy has said on a number of occasions that what he wants most is his own show. The Vice show wasn't total shit but it flopped and he's second fiddle to HT on the radio, apart from the advice show which is basically part time. Will little Jimmy ever be able to move out of Opie's voluptuous shadow and take the limelight, either on TV or radio?

Would a real star be so blinky or not update his standup act from 1996?
Jimmy as third mic is the height of his ability as we get to see every day of he's in chair #2.
It's the Peter Principle in action.

Of course not. He's a mediocre comedian who lucked out by falling into a ready made double act with ant.

and his acting stinks, his fucking twitchy face is too much.

Jimmy should partner with an animation team and just do voices and writing for his stupid, dumb, hilarious characters. He can easily fill a 15 minute block of episodes.

"The Adventures of Chip Chipperson"

or Ted Schecklers Emporiums, Boardroom jimmys etc. This would be a huge hit on Adult swim or some shit.

They could all be characters in the show. Uncle Paul as Chip's creepy uncle, his muddah and Lamar, Ted Scheckler could have different Emporiums for each episode, Edgar could be the weird neighbor, and at the end of each episode, we all learn something new when we have to "Shinkle bout it"

I used to think that, but after seeing "Uncle Paul's Dating Service" on VICE, or whatever the fuck the skit was called, I don't think so.
I just think he's a guy who does a lot better with improvisational stuff than prewritten material.

That vice thing cracked me up

Vice is a good one to hitch your wagon to.
My issue with watching Jimmy outside of the radio show is he always seems like he's "on."
He's not the relaxed, off-the-cuff type he was on O&A.
And he beats the self-deprecation thing into the ground. We get it, you hate yourself. You're constantly judging every little thing you do. Move on. It just makes the audience uncomfortable after a while.
I'm sure he would argue that's who he is and he'd feel dishonest to act any other way. But plenty of guys make fun of themselves and are still successful (eg Conan, Jimmy Kimmel). It's about finding a balance between mocking yourself and still being confident in what you're doing.

Very true. I really enjoyed his vice show but the relentless self deprecation made it a little weird. Surprised no one told him to stop after he did that in the first 2 eps.
1 breadmoccasin 2015-01-13
It's annoying in 2 ways. #1 it's still you saying something and getting the attention onto yourself, needy, and #2 every comedian self deprecates, but it's like the Tropic Thunder bit that's been run into the ground, you don't go "full retard", or in this case, you don't go "full" self deprecation. Conan O'brien was a master of just beating the shit out of himself and his show enough.

No. There are other comedians than him that are much more relevant as well as having material that can be appreciated by a laregr audience.

No kidding. That 9/11 joke he does in every standup special was funny the first 10 times, but now it's gotten stale.

Jimmy will have a successful show once tv technology advances enough to have a refresh rate as fast as his blink rate.

No. He doesn't have the verbal skill, interpersonal skills, intelligence, or semi-well informed general knowledge to carry a program.
Furthermore, visually, he is a VERY uncomfortable watch.
His former role as a "comedic sniper", for lack of a better term, when it was still the O&A show was perfect for him, in my opinion.

No. He is not entertaining enough on his own or creative enough.

I was a huge jimmy fan and watched one of his specials... Turned it off. His act is pretty bad, I went into is assuming I'd love it.

I felt the same way. LOVE him in the radio...he's hilarious and even when he's bombing because he's tired and silly, that's really funny too. I made it through a few minutes of his Cleveland special years ago and had to turn it off it was that bad.

Holy crap, you're absolutely right. He's killer in a comedy team like with Ant, but otherwise he is a bore.

None of those guys will ever do anything they dont do for themselves. They're all old school waiting around for someone to point at them and say "you, it's your turn, lets go." That attitude keeps them out of it because they rage against everything that fails instead of making something better, like Louis did.

As a fan of the guy's best, I found the Vice hosting gig very uncomfortable to watch - and I actually love cringe comedy, so that's saying volumes.
He has zero chance of gaining accessibility with a larger audience (not even a mainstream one) with his current level of screen presence that isn't likely changing anytime soon because he's in his mid-forties.
2 duncanhills 2015-01-13
Not a talk show, but he could probably turn out a good animation or a sketch show.
2 KnickedUp 2015-01-13
No. He's not some guy who is going to be liked by the masses. He's loved by a couple thousand degenerate, fat, bald guys. Jimmy is very hard to watch, in person. Radio certainly suits him better.

I'm not even a comic.
Or just keep doing your thing since it's keeping you fiscally happy.

Cost/benefit situation. There's an audience for him, but is it worth the production?

Maybe an Andy Richter at best, but even that would be pushing it.

The Vice show didn't flop. If I remember right, Jimmy said Vice wants to do more, but they were moving offices. However, I could be wrong.

They're telling him he has to go.

"We really liked the show, Jim and we're excited to do a second season. Meet us at our new office in the heart of Brooklyn next to the crackhouse, a black gentleman will be waiting for you."
5 mesobuku 2015-01-13
It didn't "flop"... Management just doesn't like the direction of the show.
1 tar_baby33 2015-01-13
If it didn't flop they'd be doing more...plain and simple. It's like when people say, "well they really liked me and think I'll be very successful they just didn't have a place for me." Bullshit...if you were that good they'd MAKE a place for you.
