I blame Sam Roberts

I don't know why. Somehow he ruined it all. He is like the superfan who murdered John Lennon.

Sam is the only thing keeping Jim's jokes alive... Opie just ignores them, but Sam plays the role Anthony played (obviously, not as well) where he asks followup questions to Jim giving Jim the chance to create radio gold.

It's a completely different dynamic, though. Ant was in that studio because he's naturally funny, has amazing timing, and is a quick wit. Ant has stood toe to toe with professional comedians and held his own - and developed the skills to do that from decades of being on the radio.
Sam walked into a studio. He has no wit, his idea of funny is to just repeat what someone says, or take an idiotic contrarian position.
The other thing that makes Ant and Jimmy so funny is they're always trying to one-up each other, waiting for a failed line or to jump in with a reference or slam, trying to make each other laugh. Sam will never be like that, with anyone, because he doesn't care if other people laugh, only if HE thinks it's funny, because, mommy's big boy is the most important person in the room.
Pollak was right, he hasn't earned the right to be in that room, on mic. He should be handing out guest's bios, after writing them, and keeping his mouth shut.

Sam is the only non-guest that can make Jim laugh anymore. And he understands how to play along with Jim's characters, whereas Opie's approach to improv is "don't acknowledge the characters so the joke becomes all about you and your fake frustration rather than Jim's silliness"

nothing in the show's made me harder than sam reacting to Chip. the way that sam just bluntly calls Chip a retard and a liar is just hilarious
8 RelentlessNoodle 2015-01-07
I agree actually, all of the clips of Chip v.s. Sam clips are very funny to me. There was a line where Sam says to Chip something like "You're not funny, you're just a boring, stupid man." and it made Jim break character and start laughing, it was pretty good.

The Sam-vs-Chip blowups are always great. I love the way Sam plays it completely straight, as though he's in a heated argument with a real person.

That seems like an unusual reaction to have, but whatever gets your rocks off, dude

Sam get's a bum wrap around here IMO. He's a decent 3rd mic. Obviously being put in the position where he's basically subbing for Anthony whenever there isn't a 2nd comedian in isn't really an easy place to be. Of course he's not as good as Anthony but like the guy above said, at least he has more comedic sense than Opie to keep Jim rolling when he gets going.
1 FatMidAgeMagnet 2015-01-07
If you like him, fine. I personally think his voice and what he says is like dragging fingernails on a chalkboard.
I don't listen to the show anymore, so I don't really care if he's on or not. And yes, he's a big reason why I don't listen anymore.

Can we stop using professional comedians as a benchmark for wit? Ant is a much better and funnier conversationalist than most comedians.
5 cnuttin 2015-01-07
Believe me... Sam is no Ant... I'm just saying I'd rather have Sam in the room than Opie stomping over Jim's lines. And to Sam's credit, as one of the posts below mentioned, I actually have laughed from sam calling chip a retard and a liar... and "that's not how you say that" when edgar mispronounces words.
Honestly, If Ant came back, I would honestly like to see Sam continue to get some air time. I feel like he really has stepped up and he has some value. I think he also keeps things a little fresh... how many Ozzy songs and 40 year old movie references can we hear? It's nice to get a little influence from someone a bit younger.
1 wizardnug 2015-01-07
How crazy u r to compare Sam to Ant in the same sentence. I puked into my mouth a little when I read that... Tastes like chicken surprisingly
4 cnuttin 2015-01-07
no one is comparing the two. Opie doesn't interact with Jim, Sam does. Ant did. That's the only similarity.

Maybe we needed Danny. Danny kept quiet and pulled videos up. Pulling videos up took care of dead air and static thinking. The boys looked at lemon party instead of Sam babbling about wrestling...
I miss Danny.
13 dxInt 2015-01-07
I miss Danny except for every time he tried to start shit passive-aggressively with Patrice, or got butthurt when people called him on his shit, or whenever he opened his mouth.
6 EVILTHE_TURTLE 2015-01-07
Or you know when Patrice ordered him to go to a shitty shady website and then forgot that it was him that started all of the bullshit, then of course had to be reminded through a replay and then just laughed it off when it showed that it was all him.
People forget how irrational Patrice was, though it was part of his charm.
3 dxInt 2015-01-07
Patrice was so fucking unfair, but whenever people called him on his shit he always relished it. There isn't enough of that kind of aggressive playfulness in the world.

I didn't have to read anything else and know I was going to agree with whatever you were going to say.
5 shimrra 2015-01-07
Who ever liked Sam Roberts? I liked him back when he wasn't on the mic so much. Now that he is on the air he just loves pointing out everyone's fault, especially Erock's which is getting predictable & boring.
2 cnuttin 2015-01-07
Erock brings nothing to the table.
5 [deleted] 2015-01-07
Sam was entertaining when he was an intern now he is just an Opie lapdog. Did Jess Roberts and Lynsi pull a train on Bam?
4 jakdak 2015-01-07
Sam is not the problem.
Sam is a symptom of the problem.
4 FatMidAgeMagnet 2015-01-07
There's some truth to that. Ant's gone, it's not his call - the only reason he's on the mic is one person...who has 20 years of radio experience, who "knows funny"...
5 jakdak 2015-01-07
Sam's ascendence was basically the result of Steve C getting let go, and that was the result of the Sirius takeover and all the shitty decisions that got made by the new management.
Sam was fine in small doses as the shit-stirrer. He's not bringing anything to the table as a producer. (Especially since he so obviously views himself as on air talent)
3 FatMidAgeMagnet 2015-01-07
I know. Stunt Brain should still be there, not him, too. They (O&A) were so passive after Sirius took over, they could have fought to replace Steve with someone with some talent and skill, but they just used who was on staff, and continued in cruise control mode.
I really wonder what it would have been like if they'd tried harder, had staff meetings, did show prep, had someone like Steve C around. Sam would have never survived in that environment, the only reason he has, is Opie doesn't require him to do the real work of an exec producer. Sam would be under a desk crying to mommy on the phone if he had to do a real day's work of a real producer.
4 jakdak 2015-01-07
Well for one thing Steve C would still be alive.
3 FatMidAgeMagnet 2015-01-07
Oh, man, chills there. Yeah.
2 BeerCanThick 2015-01-07
Fire Sam,Stuntbrain as executive producer, D boi, Than and Travis production, Erock interacting with guests and co-booking, never hire Sal and fire Troy. Losing Steve C, D Boi, Than and Stuntbrain gutted the show behind the scenes. All the "Team Steve" guys. We are left with people Opie picked.
4 panjshirlion 2015-01-07
I'm noticing that Sam is gradually becoming more and more emboldened to acknowledge Opie's idiocy as he realizes that Opie is too stupid to notice.
3 DapperDan0979 2015-01-07
Sam doesn't bother me that much. Once in a while he gets too cunty for my liking.
The thing I hate the most is when Opie tries to drag him in to be his straight man.
"WHAT, Sam?!" When he knows he's made a shitty joke (ex: taking a shot at Fez) and plays dumb so him and Sam can have a little back and forth.
Real Abbott and Costello those two...
3 cnuttin 2015-01-07
"Real Abbott and Costello those two..." - That actually made me LOL picturing those 2 dummies doing the who's on first bit.
3 BumbiBestie 2015-01-07
Blame Sam Roberts for what? All he did was completely ruin the chemistry of the team and TMZ-ify the show to the point that Anthony committed career suicide rather than get up at 4am for another shit show talking about 90-day Fiancé reality TV horseshit.
2 fart_yourself_awake 2015-01-07
Executive Producer - Sam Roberts

Actually enjoy and notice as he subtly points out Opie's ... everything and Greggshells doesn't notice because he's a oblivious simpleton.

Sam totally missed a chance for comedy gold today. How do you NOT try to do a live read for Guys Hate Steven Singer when you are in studio with a she-male and three professional stand-up comedians? (Four, if you count Rich Vos.)
