It strikes me as one of those movies that will play forever on cable, from service to service, it'll profit quite nicely. BluRay sales and downloads will help, too. It looks like one of those movies nobody goes to see, but when it's on iTunes, they go "hey, I want to see that!"
Plus, it opened against the Hobbit. Everyone is being killed from that one. The Hobbit is going to dominate through the new year.
Movies are a long-game, for profits. That's why points are more lucrative than big salaries.
Chris Rock was expecting a grand slam on this one.
On set, whenever someone complimented Rock’s performance in a scene he responded with cheerful self-deprecation: “Just trying to stay in show business.” Unlike Andre Allen, Rock doesn’t have a signature character so popular that he never has to work again, although he does provide the voice of Marty, the zebra, in the three “Madagascar” films. He is a working comic who needs to keep working. “I’ve never made money like Eddie,” he said. “I’ve done fine, but it’s dribs and drabs: two here, one there. I never got, like, a thirty-million-dollar check. I never had a movie make three hundred million dollars that’s just starring me. So I don’t necessarily do it for the money—but I’ve never had so much money I don’t have to think about it.” He sometimes describes “Top Five” as his last chance to get it right. “It was, like, O.K., if this doesn’t work I can definitely see no one letting me direct a movie again,” he said. “I had to think that was a possibility. I mean, how many times can you not have a hit?” He searched for a suitable analogy. “I used to go see Christian Slater movies,” he said, shrugging. “They don’t really have them anymore.”
Every movie is different, but I've been reading recently that a general rule of thumb is that a movie needs to make 3 times its budget back to be profitable (I believe this includes international ticket sales as well).
As we have learned from the Sony leaks, those big comic book movies don't actually make any money. In fact, the only movies that do make money are the comedies.
That's something a bit different, that's called Hollywood Accounting.
No big picture ever makes an on-paper profit, the studios go to great lengths to make sure of that.
Lucasfilm still famously sends out letters to people waiting on points to inform them that Return of the Jedi has yet to make any profit.
A set of leaked accounts from an old Harry Potter showed it made a 150million loss on a gross ticket sale of over 600million. Warner Brothers had charged itself 350million for distribution.
That's why anyone on points need gross-points or they're wasting their time, without a lawsuit to threaten them to open the books, no big picture ever turns a profit, and net-points are designed to never ever pay out.
Came here to say this. A bomb is something that loses a lot of money. This has already passed bomb levels, and judging by the reviews, will have a great life in the VOD and DVD/Blu-ray market.
Although, Chris had to fight hard to get this made though, and judging by its whimper at the box office, it may be his last personal project for a long time.
Top 5 is a R rated comedy coming out at the same time as hobbit and other kid shit, of course it's going to rank low. It also didn't cost 500 million dollars to make. Also who cares about box office rankings that shit is for shill assholes
I saw it last night. I dont think i laughed out loud once. Just kinda smiled at certain parts. That said, i didnt think it was terrible. Id give it a 3/5.
Yeah, id download it. You might think its really funny. It takes a lot for a movie to make me really laugh. Plus i thought the story was atleast decent.
How many theaters were showing it? I thought this movie was intended to be award bait come Oscar season so it'll make most of it's money by word-of-mouth the next 2 months.
Sorry it wasn't Twilight, queeb. Sounds like it doing pretty well, and has some great ratings. Movies that aren't for tween girls, or some superhero bullshit aren't usually blockbusters these days.

Top 5 is a shitty title

It already made its budget back and it's only been out for a week
It's not a huge money maker but it's doing fine.

That's the shooting budget, that's how much it cost to deliver the negative.
Marketing and distribution for any big picture usually costs anything up to another 20 or 30 million.
The exhibitors take roughly half the theater gross, so for a $12million film to break even, it needs to sell $52million worth of seats, give or take.
That's why they make comic book movies. It's usually easier to do 300million on a 150million film than it is to get 60 on a 10million.

Yeah it's a shame. It looks like he called in a lot of favors to get all the cameos this time around.
If he wants to get a hit from here on ,he needs to do a cop buddy flick with Tyler Perry or Hart.

He would play good opposite Dane I think.

They sure did market the hell out of it too.

Ole bottom of the barrel Sundays. What's next, Jimmy prefers spicy mustard?

R rated comedy got out earned by massive epic and mainstream movies? Color me shocked.

He probably made more money voicing a Zebra in the #7 film.

lol
3 GWARscientist 2014-12-21
Wow, it barely beat a 2 month old movie (Interstellar)for #10 spot in its opening wknd. That's not good folks.
2 pootsforever 2014-12-21
It's opening weekend was last weekend.
3 GWARscientist 2014-12-21
Well its doing spectacular then. I stand corrected.
1 Dr_ZombieCat_MD 2014-12-21
It's also only in 1,300 theaters, even after 7 weeks Intersteller is still in more than that.
3 Nightkrawler49 2014-12-21
It'd an independent R rated comedy that didn't get a super wide release with a budget of $10 million. It's doing fine.
2 FJaxJones 2014-12-21
Cast was too black for mainstream appeal, probably

If by bombs, you mean do pretty well than you are correct. Also, how big of a role do they have?
1 wiseprogressivethink 2014-12-21
Good.
1 FreddyNoPockets 2014-12-21
That Jerry Seinfeld cameo was on point though.
1 AnudderCast 2014-12-21
That's because it was fucking terrible, and once real word of mouth got around instead of the bullshit critics reviews, it tanked.
