Any time he just acted real it was fine. When he didn't have to "pump it up for the radio" and when he didn't have to "do the bit" and he could just be real. When he would just chat with Anthony and Jimmy even over seemingly unimportant stuff, it was still very listenable. Opie and Anthony could talk about anything for hours and it did come off very natural and not forced like it does with just Opie and Jimmy.
He legitimately made me laugh out loud during the Piscipo call.
I like him, for the most part, during the early XM and terrestrial days. Haven't heard nearly enough of the NEW stuff to make a judgment on that, though. He would acknowledge bombs, people didn't walk on eggshells around him, and he actually acted as a proper host and moved things along.
The Dave Rabbit episode is probably one of my favorite episodes and that's mostly thanks to Opie. Its not funny, but I just found it really interesting. It just felt like a really cool show.
Hanging up on Kristen Bell for absolutely no reason was funny
The cakestomp was pretty great
And I thought he had a good sense of humor when it came to retards. He was pretty amusing and actually had some good lines when talking about the waterheads and shit like that. Cooking with retards was pretty fuckin funny
I really liked Opie in the Patrice Vs. Gallagher show. I thought he did a good job being a good cop. Opie asking Gallagher if he was a racist also spurred all the really hilarious moments during that show.
Poker Chips, Ed Asner, The Wig, anytime David or Bobo was on, watching his demo reel, listening to old AAF tapes/Real Rock TV clips, Joe Piscopo, anytime he's hung up on someone basically it's hilarious.
He's never been THAT bad, he was always just 3rd on the funny depth chart behind 1a/1b Ant and Jim, which is why the hate has reached extreme hyperbole.
He once said that we all know in our hearts that this is it, and that there's no afterlife, and that people wouldn't be crying so much at funerals if anyone actually believed in Heaven. I've thought that myself plenty of times and I thought it was funny how he said it (can't remember exactly the wording he used). Anthony thought it was funny too, actually. Not the fake laugh. He's sometimes very good with the drops, particularly Homer and the car crash (though he overuses them). There must be Jocktobers where he's said some funny things.
I also didn't think it was horrible the very first time he referred to his fat as the baby weight, though the subsequent 300 times could've been left out. And the first time he called Marion a tough guy was funny, but again his problem is repetition with that. And I hate to say it, but I enjoy a list if it's actually about something list-worthy and isn't just shoehorned into whatever they're talking about.
I have enjoyed the Opie hate, but have to give it to him for bringing in those tapes of the old days. If he really wasn't able to laugh at himself he probably would have 'left them alone'
The time he hung up on the one man star wars show guy. That was solid plus ant laughed hard as hell. I have to stop coming to this sub because every show leads me to remember the hate and then I start seeing it too.
"Love ya miss ya" is the perfect insincere sign off. Aside from that, I like that he's willing to throw himself under the bus, and indicates as such by stating "I'm going to throw myself under the bus here..."
When he pissed on that book for a minute plus, the time he told the story of nearly paralyzing himself boogie boarding to the room of comedians and then got bashed hilariously for half an hour. (One of the best shows ever.)
I know I have it at home, but off the top of my head i want to say it was the 9/16/10 show. Was a spinning wheel of hate show. Just bashing everything that was said. Anthony dropped the "It only takes a steak to make your mouth" line at Bobby not too long after they played audio of him admitting to giving head to a guy for one. One of the best shows ever.
You can find the bulk of the show on Youtube, just look for most brutal show ever or some shit. For some reason it's hard to find on google but it's there.
I have Two Favorite Opie Moments.
One was when he took off almost 2 Weeks when Hudson was born. And the Second, is when he took off for the birth of his Daughter, with the Mysterious Identity!
ok, it's not any moments, really on air im always like booo or shhh whenever he speaks but he is the host who has orchestrated everything and under his yuuuckkk....ughhh.......leadership...there have been all those funny moments including the great patrice and ant making fun of joe derosas cellphone, race conversations and old movie references etc.....i feel dirty even giving him that
anytime they played old WAAF clips was when opie was at his best, he was always great at making fun of himself which is why i dont get why he's such a defensive idiot nowadays, if he was more like that and made fun of himself for a lot of things that he would be more likable.
I don't remember the context, but someone burned someone with some hyperbole and he went "OOOHHHHHHHHH... that's truuuuuuue...". It was the one time I can think of that he delivered something worth laughing at.

Joe Piscopo phonecall was good. The hanging up, the silent treatment, etc.

So in defense of Opie, you're saying his talents are pushing a button and not talking?

Opie did some good when he didn't have Ant's back. Now Ant has a brand new opportunity from that, and a lot better show.

Also the segment on Jim's birthday when they had Chubby Checker in studio makes me laugh.
