Joe Rogan is an awesome broadcaster but an awful comedian.

Love the podcast, but watched his latest stand-up special and didn't laugh once.

He's waaaay too preachy to ever be a funny guy.
18 thrillated 2014-11-26
What are you talking about? You don't find incessant talk about weed and its legal status in any given state shouted at the audience absolutely hilarious?
6 Pat_Battle_Storage 2014-11-26
Before his head became a smoke-filled kettlebell, he was good. Some early shit. It's still shouty because he was doing a Kinison/Hicks/Rock/early Stanhope thing, but that old material was densely written, not say-keyword-and-pause-for-WOOOOOOOOOOOO! style. He has some well-made bits now, but his overall thing has gone to hell. Happens.
1 tonygarycooper 2014-11-26
Dude that whole album was fucking great. All of his other work though...
1 majestik6 2014-11-26
Good point. I liked his set, but I saw him in 2006.
13 LouisCGhey 2014-11-26
West Coast comedy in general is not funny.
6 RahnBayngtin 2014-11-26
But he's from Boston, the same age as the greatest crop of comics ever IMO: Louis, Burr, Patrice, DiPaolo, Dane Cook, Stanhope, etc
3 CoolerKing37 2014-11-26
I like how you just casually tossed Dane Cook's name in that group of all-star comics....
7 RahnBayngtin 2014-11-26
They are all in the same age group and were all at the same clubs in the 90's... During which time Dane was the biggest. And then he turned into the biggest comic in the world. I'm not a fan of him either but his name belongs there when someone mentions that group of comics from Boston.
1 Blockyblizzle 2014-11-26
lol dane cook
what are you an ovulating high school girl on myspace?
1 Kennigit 2014-11-26
And he's been living in LA for the past 20 years :(
4 Gronez_Bambaataa 2014-11-26
I find that whole deathsquad stuff painfully unfunny.
1 BottleOfAon 2014-11-26
Is deathsquad even a thing anymore? I thought basically all the podcasters left to join all things comedy or stuff like that.
1 Blockyblizzle 2014-11-26
that hack comedian that runs deathsquad should quit comedy, only reason he's where he's at is because of rogan
10 RahnBayngtin 2014-11-26
These are my exact thoughts. He's very interesting and smart, he's a great interviewer but I always thought his standup was severely lacking. Not terrible but not really good either. Overall Im pro-Joe Rogan. His shows good and he always has funny people on.
Also I despise the pretentious, know it all pothead fans he breeds. I don't hate Joe either, just don't think he's THAT great and his fans are douches. Exactly the way I feel about the band Tool.
11 equinoxexistential 2014-11-26
Tool fans are infuriating.
3 PrinceCharmin 2014-11-26
As a tool fan, I agree. There are members of the audience who think listening to the band makes you smarter than everyone else, or they act like it's a religion. It's a fucking rock band, you dimwits. At the last show I saw live, I had to cringe at about 75% of the audience for being complete fucking douchebags. About 15% of the crowd where completely cool people. The rest were just the usual concert crowd.
0 equinoxexistential 2014-11-26
They all just ingest psilocybin and croon over the vague esoteric lyrics.
2 WiretapStudios 2014-11-26
I mean, that goes for literally hundreds of bands.
1 samsterlicious 2014-11-26
it's not vague lyrics. think for yourself and question authoirty is pretty obvious
1 RahnBayngtin 2014-11-26
... But when they look at Maynard as an authority figure and kind of think like him instead of thinking for themselves... It's really contradictory to the "message".
2 KNUCKKLEFUCKER 2014-11-26
I think Tool is highly overrated.
2 Faded99 2014-11-26
Listen to the woooooooords maaaaaaaaaan

1 RahnBayngtin 2014-11-26
I love blowing aTool fans mind by convincing them that Maynard would despise them and they're sheep-ish nature just on principle alone.
And Maynayrd is such a great guy to look up to, a real Ray of fucking sunshine...
1 WiretapStudios 2014-11-26
He was actually really cool on the last few podcasts I've heard him on. I'm not really a Tool fan, but he seemed upbeat, funny, laid back, not a weirdo at all.
0 IBison 2014-11-26
Yeah, hearing about how viable and sensible it is to start a wine farm in a desert isn't weird and pretentious.
I especially liked when he didn't have an opinion on anything.

Don't forget about conspiratards
10 fuckjeah 2014-11-26
I agree. You can also tell when he has been listening to Hedburg, Hicks, Kinison or Stanhope, he basically switches through a plastic version of all 4 personas with a little DIaz influence sprinkled in.
LIstening to his podcast, its obvious how his thought stream works, he says something silly, someone makes an astute funny observation, Joe tags it with something stupid and now its Joe's joke and you'll probably hear a derivative version in week.
He's also not very smart, well he seems smart to below average people because he reads the headlines of articles with long words in them but he isn't very logical at all. It's not a very funny combination to have a stupid person who also takes themselves extremely seriously.
5 Brombeee 2014-11-26
Yes he takes himself too seriously meanwhile spouting Wikipedia information. It like a man preparing a tv dinner in the microwave, who says: look what I made man! Meanwhile someone else did all the thinking and preparing.
3 aelx_jons 2014-11-26
A chemical called dimethyltryptamine and 11 hydroxy thc produced in your liver.
Thanks "professor Rogan" from the university of wikipedia.
8 JutsinBabber 2014-11-26
The new special was really quite unpleasant to watch... he does these voices that are stolen from Dave Chappelle, Anthony Cumia, and something that sounds like Carlos Mencia ..?
1 jsmill1 2014-11-26
He does sound like Carlos Mencia because Mencia stole a lot of his style from Joe, hence Joe's anti-Mencia video and rants. He talked about seeing Mencia all over LA at his different spots, and feeling uncomfortable with it.
6 RockCoatMon 2014-11-26
i'm a douchey west coast stoner and I always thought Rogan was better than average.

I don't think he's a natural comedian like a lot of the other Boston comics. He's just the type of guy that goes obsessively into whatever activity he has an interest in. Works very well for martial arts and other activities but for comedy you can only get so good without that natural talent.
It just shows that as long as you try hard and carry yourself like a proper stand-up, you can have a career doing it even when your jokes are pretty poor.
2 fart_yourself_awake 2014-11-26
thank you for the update. It will be noted.
2 little-pete-ferguson 2014-11-26
I want to like him, because he's held in high esteem by the comedians i like, but the podcast is a snorefest!!- one laugh per hour. He tries to kick too much knowledge, rather than going for the laugh.
1 Brombeee 2014-11-26
I cannot stand his voice either. The thick-tongued voice is unlistenable. He Probably shouldn't smoke weed before/ during the show.
2 [deleted] 2014-11-26
I saw him this year on my birthday for the first time. I do love Rogan, but I was surprised how um...not as funny he was as I would have expected?
To make it worse, he headlined after Bill Burr got up and A) Destroyed a room like no one I've ever seen, except a time Jay Mohr showed up to an open mic, and B) Delivered the single funniest set I've ever heard in my life. The muscles in my face hurt from laughing so hard, I've never had that happen. I was laughing so hard I was getting uncomfortable.
Joe gets up after and you can just feel the energy in the room roll back about 50%, it was weird. It reminded me of that thing Bruer always says about GNR going up after Metallica on the 91 tour.
1 Water-in-a-Cup 2014-11-26
True.
1 dxInt 2014-11-26
Some of the bigfoot stuff made me laugh, but yeah, not that great.
1 bonecrushingkisses 2014-11-26
I do think it was his best special so far, perhaps a low bar, I know. I enjoyed it though and have no issue supporting Joe after the hours upon hours of free entertainment he's provided.

If Joe wasn't so self obsessed, he'd probably be a little funnier (and likeable in general) but I don't care for the whole 'scream shit obnoxiously into a mic' style of stand up nor do I like people that always have to be right on every subject like Joe.
1 majestik6 2014-11-26
I've seen him live, back before he was banned at the laugh factory. It was a good show. I wasn't falling out of my chair, but it was a good set.
I agree that west coast comedy is inferior to east coast comedy.
1 thissiteruinedme 2014-11-26
Joe Rogan is not naturally funny for a comedian. He wasn't born with a comic's wit. He is, however, one of the best and most interesting people of that ilk. He's done a lot with a little.

How am i getting downvoted for liking joe rogan. I thought everyone here liked him

-3 cc1945 2014-11-26
Stand up comedy sucks a dick. This is something every comedian and comedy fan knows deep down, but pretends isn't true.
Of all stand up comedy, even of all stand up comedy that is widely considered "great" or "the best", only about 10% can actually make you laugh out loud.
Pryor isn't actually "ha ha" funnny. Neither is Carlin. If you watch a special by Dave Attell, Doug Stanhope, Bob Kelly, Tom Papa, Jerry Seinfeld, Sherrod Small, Keith Robinson, Nick DiPaolo, Rich Vos, Bonnie Macfarlane, Joe Derosa, Tosh, Anthony Jeselnik, etc, you will most likely not even laugh once.
The only comedians who can actually produce multiple out loud laughs with their act SOMETIMES are Louis CK, Bill Burr, Patrice and occasionally Colin.
Comedians are funny. Comedy isn't. Its time to accept this and stop throwing the term "great comic" and "very funny comic" around willy nilly.
1 CoolerKing37 2014-11-26
You're not far off. A comedian's off the cuff line while riffing on O&A can often be WAY funnier than their actual stand-up special.
-4 CUNTYMOM 2014-11-26
