I know it's a joke song but I always thought it's great. It's a real cry for help, and it speaks to those of us that want to kick the bucket during the holidays. It reminds me of The Metamorphosis, and it's even more depressing.
I think the reason he says "falalalala" without the melody is because he can no longer relate to the maniacally cheerful attitude that people seem to adopt during the holidays. There he was, feeling pretty good, taking his time on the highway and watching the snow.
