He is the asshole boss who does stupid shit just to flex his power.
If he feels someone on the show is outshining him he screams Hold on 3 times (candyman candyman candyman), and everything is right in the world.
Sometimes he does it because 2 or 3 people are talking at once and nothing can be heard; most of the time, though, he's doing the professional broadcaster thing, moving the show along before the guests get stale and self-indulgent.
It's what he's always done, only it's more noticeable now.
