I took 2 years of American high school Spanish (which hardly counts) and promptly forgot everything.
7 years later, I got a 179-day assignment in Latin America. When I was there I read every newspaper, talked to every taxi driver, macked it to every girl, and ordered everything off the menu.
Basically embarrassed myself daily and made a fool of myself everywhere I went in-country. That's how I learned.
