Weird little thing that bothers me only new yorkers will get
14 2014-11-06 by jcafaro17
Opie never leaves the upper east side and knows nothing about the rest of the city. Which is fine, but what drives me nuts is that he always mocks Roland and Troy and whomever for going to "foodie" and "hipster" places. Most of the places Roland brings up and talks about are very popular and great places and Opie acts like there these weird little hole in the wall spots only a select few know about. There was one show where Roland went to Bed Stuy Brooklyn to pick up donuts at a place called Dough and Opie had a hissy fit. "You went to bed stuy for donuts?!?!?!" like he couldn't believe it. The thing is, Dough is probably the most popular place in NYC for donuts and Bed Stuy isn't all that far from their studio relatively speaking. Also, Bed Stuy is a nice neighborhood now and Opie acted like Roland was going into beirut to get a cheap cupcake.
I know I'm nit picking here and being a real "hater" but it drives me nuts. It serves no purpose to be talking about that stuff on the show. The vast majority of the listeners don't know the geography of the city or establishments well enough to appreciate the banter and the few that do realize he's talking out of his ass.
I don't want to sound like an arrogant New Yorker but we tend to be on top of things when it comes to new restaurants, neighborhoods, and general culture. It's ok not to be hip to this stuff but when he tears down others for knowing it or venturing to another borough I want to break my radio.
The reason I bring this up is because the show #Bennington on Fridays is the complete opposite. Both Ron and his daughter are on top of everything, it's so enjoyable to listen to. Ron isn't even originally from NYC and he knows more than most people who've lived her their whole lives. Opie knows good restaurants in the east 90s.
Sorry, I know I just hated about nonsense but I had to get that off my chest.

His views on NYC are absolutely enraging. He speaks of NYC like an afgani dirt farmer who was never within 2000 miles of it. The worst was him ranting about how nyc doesnt have any good food and how it was impossible to find any edible italian food or sushi which is so ludicrously stupid i don't know where to begin. The other that comes to mind is when he said anyone earning 250k a year was litterally poor which again is unbelievably ignorant, someone making 250k is very well of in the city and while they arnt living in penthouses neither is mr. Im richer than you will ever be. Oh and when he was yelling that he spends too much on parking (park on the fucking street) or how he hates having a doorman (then move somewhere els fucking idiot). Fuck, he is so stupid

I haven't listened too recently, was this from a while back or is Roland's lunch still Opie's idea of a hot discussion topic?

I live on Long Island and work in Manhattan. So i get to be enraged by how he talks about NYC and how he talks about Long Island.

I guess that, as you said, this is something that would only enrage New Yorkers. I've never been outside of Europe so I can't relate to New York-specifics, but I can't imagine it would bother me if this was a show based in Stockholm, Sweden and he talked about it in a similar fashion.

I thought he lived in Trump City on the West Side though?

Opie, Anthony, and Jim also used to talk about how they were basically scared to go on the subway too. They also still think Harlem is a dangerous no-mans land.

Eh. I wouldn't walk one block out of my way to get donuts. What am I, 12?

Bed-Stuy isn't a "nice neighborhood" yet...again...like it last was in the 1920s...it's just a little safer than it was since the 1980s. Scrape the destructive "cultural" barnacles from Bushwick, BS, and Crown Heights, and start over. Incidentally: Opie Sucks!

Did you actually get downvoted for racism? That has to be first here, lol. Otherwise, Bed Sty is in mid transformation and I wouldn't call it nice yet. I can see it being so in 5 years.

My point was that going there during the day is no big deal.

What about 90's kids? Will they get your post that I didn't read?

It's Upper West Side. And Ron jokes about it feeling weird to go all the way to Brooklyn for food.

His out-of-touchness with bed stuy is nothing compared to what he thinks about the area around barclays center. The first time he went there he was talking about how nice it is that you get off the subway right in front of the arena so you don't have to walk around that 'shady area'.
If you leave barclays and walk in LITERALLY ANY DIRECTION for 2 minutes you will be in the middle of $2million+ brownstones or high rise "luxury" condo buildings.
I guess he saw a couple of black people going into the grocery store across the street and got nervous.

Completely off topic but it annoys me when i hear any of them say thwy were waiting "on line." I never heard anyone say this(not even in any media) until i started listening to OnA. Is this just a NY/Northeast thing? Everyone ive ever heard says waiting in line.
That was dumb, i know.
8 TobyTheRobot 2014-11-06
As far as I know just about everyone in NY says "on line." And they're the only ones; right-thinking people say "in line."

I notice it all over the new york area. NJ says it too. My girlfriend is from the south and I didn't realize the difference till she pointed it out.

It's retarded. Unless there's a fucking line painted on the ground they're standing on, they are INSIDE of a line of people. Making it IN LINE.

Like Opie's skates?

Even with the disclaimer that made my asshole clench, well done
