Been listening to old Jocktober's on Youtube...

After listening to a couple a day (most are in 45 min clips or so), it's really driving me insane how much Greggshells has to over-sell how bad every clip is. They're bad enough on their own, the lengths he goes to to hammer everyone over the head with it is maddening. Some of them he reaches so hard he just makes things up, or exaggerates so bad it even takes you out of it or kills the comedy. It's like "shut UP."

The other thing he does that drives me nuts in them is to act like he can never follow what's going on in the bits or the set ups. Like it's very clearly explained by the show in question, then it goes back live and Opie has to go "What, what are they saying, Sam? I can't even follow this, what's going on...?" Stop acting like you're watching Memento for the first time, dummy.

My annoyance with him is becoming retroactive, and starting to infect old episodes/era's. No.

I know exactly what you mean. I can't listen to old stuff now without hearing all the horrid things we hate about him. It's like they've been magnified a thousand percent.

That's what I was trying to get at in this thread, so far either everyone seems to be inexplicably aggravated by it. Not even Jocktober's are safe, and those were like hallowed ground for me.

I actually used to like him. I thought the show seemed directionless when it was just Anthony and Jimmy. I'm so ashamed now.

I did too. I always thought he was the wink link, but he still fit into the machine that made the show go and he never bothered me too much. I didn't mind Ant & Jim shows a bit, but if Ant wasn't there it was a long 3 hours.

wink link

I'm with you. I recently finished re-listening to the first 2 years of Jocktober and I guess because I'm more conscious of Opie's annoying habits now then I was when I first listened to them that my enjoyment of those classic shows have gone down.

It's also hard to listen to Opie bash hack radio and shitty management knowing what dull mediocrity O&A would devolve into. It's both infuriating and sad.

Am I the only one that generally never liked Jocktober? Some of them were pretty good but all in all it's like watching your favorite show and in the middle they all go 'let's watch General Hospital for an hour and then dissect it'. There's not much going on on a soap opera that you couldn't guess in the first five minutes and the same was true for the shows lambasted on Jocktober. PU I say. PU

I'm half and half on Jocktober. I don't like the majority of the ones that are nameless, boring jocks from some random town. Of course it stinks, of course they have nothing going on.

But I absolutely adore the Jocktober of Scott and Todd, John and Jeff, and Scorch. Those three in particular are just so fucking bad, they were virtually endless amounts of delusional hack shit to make fun of. As opposed to just making fun of some nobody in Wisconsin giving the weather and doing prepburger bits.

I've been listening since 2001, and Jimmy's Todd impression is still one of the funniest things he's ever done, for me anyway. One of the hardest I've ever laughed at him was the day he came up with that impression, and said he was "Boobies McDoobyschnook," and 'went to Easter Island and one of the giant rock heads started talking, and then I did a radio show with him.'

Agreed

I always hated jocktober. They're usually making fun of a show that's intended to appeal to all audiences, so it's people being PG and overly pleasant, but so what? That's the point of those shows. If people think they suck they should listen to something else, but those shows work and the hosts are successful at doing what they were hired to do in a lot of cases.

To me, the O&A show is typically less genuine during jocktober bits than whoever they are mocking, because O&A operated under the guise of being "real", and yet they always blew the clips out of proportion. Their reactions are always like "WOW I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW CORNY THAT LINE WAS AND THEY ACTUALLY LAUGHED AT IT!", but that's just how those shows are, they know that and we know that, why do we need an "edgy" radio show to point that out? We know regular radio is bad, that's why we aren't listening to it. There are so many programs in all forms of media that are created to appeal to a wide audience and suffer drastically because of that, but that's just the nature of entertainment with mass appeal. It's the easiest thing in the world to point out how or why it's bad, but anyone who doesn't enjoy it already knows all of that stuff. It's just lazy. Sometimes good bits come from it, but not any more often than with any other (better) segment on the show.

That's a good point. There always was something that seemed a bit lazy about it. With the exception of the Scott and Todd shoe, and a handful of others, it was one of the most generic bits that O&A did.

It was my favorite. Like I've said, Jocktober, like it or not, was the show at it's finest. It was a well-oiled machine; everyone was in great form, because it was a united front railing against mediocre radio. It was like throwing meat to wolves, it was perfect.

I think it hit a particular spot with me because I can't tell you all the hours I was stuck at a job or in someone's car where I couldn't change the radio, and would have to listen to this fucking morning zoo garbage and just grind my teeth. And Im going back to even before I liked O&A, like on the school bus in high school. It was nice to find a mutual hatred.

Fair enough sir, fair enough

In hindsight, my biggest problem is that Opie has no right to mock other broadcasters. His true Ketchup-Tasting colors have been revealed without Anthony. He's just a shitty music jock and Scorch-level non-talent who hitched himself to Ant and Jim.

One thing I think when I listen to an old Jocktober is that Opie so viciously hates "holes" because he is essentially the hole on his own show. He's just the thin-skinned, unfunny and fun-stomping bosom with a mouth that almost every woman in radio is. Opie attacks them so harshly so that people won't realize that he himself is a hole.

The feigned ignorance thing is a bit. It allowed them to draw out the payoff longer. It's more evident when you hear Sam explaining as if Opie really doesn't know what's going on. Same type of facetiousness as when they'd do the "Look at their facebook page, their fans are disgusting!"

Oh, I know he's doing it on purpose. But he does it so much it's really annoying.
