IMO the two most important bullet points from your list are:
- Smartphones can only be used during the breaks. The reason that Opie & Jim lack chemistry and are rarely able to maintain a dialogue is because instead of listening to each other they are focused on their social media feed whenever the other talks. If they had a component executive producer or manager of the channel this would have already happened.
Show Prep: If discussing current events is something that they are going to do on the show, the least you can do is read more than the headline to have a basic understanding of the news item you're going to discuss. It is far too often that Opie or Jim bring up a news topic that neither of them know anything about and attempt to discuss it. Wherever they do this, they are sending a message to the listeners that they don't care about the show and are simply collecting a paycheck.
If they do those two very simple things I guarantee that their chemistry would significantly improve and the show would dramatically improve.
With respect the show needs balance and until that changes there is nothing they can do to make it better.
Jimmy and Opie are great but they don't have the correct balance on their own. This is evident in the positive praise that people here are sharing whenever there is a solid 3rd mic sitting in during the week.
I will always be a fan but the show died for when SXM made the stupid decision to fire Anthony Cumia. Without his wit covering the final third of thug fee team there is no fixing this.
