You don't have to be rich to go to basketball camp. Normally they're either free or very affordable and if you already play on a team sometimes the whole team goes. There's a lot of broke kids coming up in awful situations that play basketball. It's by no means a rich man's sport nor is it unusual for players in the league to have sponsored camps during the summer or there alma mater runs it and they volunteer there time. Growing up in North Carolina I remember guys like Michael Jordan even had basketball camps and Michael Jordan would show up. It's really not out of the realm of possibility that he met and shot around with pistol Pete especially if he went to one of his camps.
