On yesterday show,Anthony Cumia dismisses the idea Opie is pushing that Anthony wanted to move on and do his own thing for a long time...

68  2014-10-01 by [deleted]

From yesterday show:

"Opie and Jimmy Norton re-signed their contracts with Sirius XM satellite radio.Sirius XM sssatellite radio (nasal voice). They put their little picture up,it's a good one. That's the one they're using with me kind of fading out like Martin McFly's brother,in "Back to the future".I just kind..."Look! They cut the top of his head off!".(laughs) So, they re-signed.

I don't know what the terms of their deals are,I don't know how long they re-signed for.I know over the years,Opie is pretty adamant about 2years deals ,actually, 1year deals (small laugh). But I don't know about this time. They signed (and) people are very confused on the 'inter-tubes',I read the 'inter-webs', and people (are) very confused as what to think, what to say, who to yell at, who to be mad at..."AAAAH! They're traitors" or "What else they're suppose to do?" or "They're all good guys! Let's all get together!" or "They'll sucked anyway.Fuck them all!" (Ant laughs) That pretty much covering everything, that you'll read on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Wackbag, all of it.That's some people opinions, which are fine. You can have opinions on things but some people try to to state thinks like they're on the "know".Like they 'know' things "I heard" or "I happen to know that this one and that one" and gets all very confusing.

I have no problem with Opie and Jimmy re-signing a deal.

"We have re-signed, not resigned". That is really a confusing little coincidence with those words isn't? Like english language is...that's pretty important 'resigned' is 're-signed' unless you do something, like put a little dash in there. You know...(laughs) What Mexican is gonna doing that, or Chinese guy? (laughs) or something. So, I have no problem with that, what else they're gonna do?

(laughs) I feel like a politician "Did you hear Anthony say what else could they do without him?" (voice) (laughs) No, I said what else they gonna do? meaning it's a great gig. It's a fucking good gig. They've only 3 and half hours now a day instead of 4.They do...they have Fridays off,for most part.I don't know the actual number but if I recall, being in the office a few times when Opie wanted Fridays off and was talking with management...probably got a lot of Fridays off (laughs) I bet it's more off than on and apparently, when they are off on Friday, is gonna be somebody doing the live show anyway.I don't know who, or what or anything but that's the case.

I hear there was a increase in money, they got some of that lucrative Anthony Cumia's money that was floating around the budget. (laughs) That a lot of people and, it's a good speculation, a lot of people thought Sirius XM was thinking come up with negotiations when they fire me was "Hey! We could save some money,we can keep the other 2 happy" and I was the person they had to eat to be alive (laughs).Remember the movie "Alive" when they crash in the Andes? and they were freezing? and starving? and they start to eat the dead people? (laughs) That's pretty much what happen.I was the sacrificial dead person and...(laughs) Eat me!.So,they took my money and they give a little to Jim, and they gave a little to Opie and they take the rest and "look, we gave them pay increases so they can be happy with us and not bitch as much, and we get rid of Anthony so we get all this money".So I think this what happen.

I would've prefer to still being there, was a easy gig and everything, and not being fired.Since I've being fired and I'm doing this, I'm very happy how things worked out afterwards.

A lot of people also speculate "Will they get together?" or "Since they signed a new deal,it doesn't include me,does that mean it's finally over for Opie&Anthony and that's it?! and they'll never be together again" because there's being some chatter on the internet that Opie and Jim talk, that it's not out of the question...I haven't heard anything (laughs).I haven't heard a word about getting the gang back together for any type of show. So,you know,Sirius XM satellite radio isn't certainly annoying me with their phone calls, begging for me to come back that's for sure.

I think it was perfect storm, for Sirius.I think, with the contract right there coming up and the ability to gain control of the show, getting rid out of one of member to weaken our position at Sirius XM. Specially mine.Mine position is very weak over there now (laughs) I'd say.And make the other 2 guys happy while saving money. It's perfect for them.It really worked out well for Sirius XM satellite radio. As far as Jim and Opie go,like I said, I have no problem with they re-signing,it's great. You get that personal angle where you hate to see anything go on without you,you know? but that why nobody likes dying while the world is still spinning and the sun coming up,and going down, everything happen and you're rotten,on the ground or something.Over that,I have no personal vendetta against them or anything.

I also have being reading that, people are saying that, Opie and...I'm not sure if Jim was saying this either.I'm not sure but Opie was saying that was obvious,or clear, that I wanted to move on or do my own thing or something.I honest don't know where that came from.I didn't (laughs), I didn't.I was dandy, sitting in my little seat, collecting my big fat pay check.I didn't like driving in the morning, that's for sure, getting up that early.Because I threw together a studio on my house in the course of 5 years and I was doing 'live from the compound',I was doing 'RedEye', and 'Hannity', and things.I always expressed an interest in politics, news and stuff like that...that didn't mean at all that I wanted to leave the show and go on my own for any reason.Hell no! I didn't wanted to that.I assumed when it ended amicably(if;the show) or the show whatever...besides me getting fired, and the show coming to a end,I assume,I'd go off and do something else.As would Opie,as would Jimmy. But I didn't want to strike on my own at this point. No,I was happier than a pig on shit, let's say.Oh Erock! (voice) (laughs) I'm kidding Eric! I love Erock! Erock is doing a show on Saturday on Sirius XM satellite radio and it's very good. He's a very funny guy and he talks about fun stuff. It's great! He's a good guy.Hun,So I was not planning on leaving, planning on anything and I explained, I thought, when Vos was here but, perhaps Vos spewing fluuuid to my ear when I was saying, maybe it got lost on translation or something. If you were a listen of the Opie&Anthony Show, there's no surprise here, big reveal, that people weren't happy at the company. They weren't.How many times did your hear the bitching going on about the studio? the phones? management? their lack of interest in the show? the lack of promotion? their pouring millions of dollars on the howard stern show and not giving us scraps? It was happening. You heard it.I'm not making this shit up and though that, you also heard many times, many times, Opie saying ---I'm not re-signing! Contracts are coming up if they think I'm gonna re-sign, they're out of their fucking minds! Big things have to change around here before I re-sign --- I guess that come though (laughs) Big things did get changed (laughs) I got throwned out (laughs) alright, that solves it (still laughing).

No, from that's what have being said, hearing that,I definitely thought I had to duck and cover. And,make some contingency plan to October.I did.I wasn't looking to leave but I was definitely under the assumption that, there was a good chance there wasn't going be a show in October. And,many years prior that, that situation come up.(...) I always liked video and photography(...) So,yeah. So,because the uncertainly that there will be a Opie&Anthony Show every year...I did this.I built up,I did the 'live from compound' shows, very willy-nilly , pre-Keith the cop organization.I had my job, you know? it was just fun...and then, Hitler comes in and gets everybody goose step in the same direction.Actually,it worked...I would hate to be arrested by Keith (laughs) that would be tragic, that would suck (still laughing).I'm teasing Keith.

I wasn't looking to leave.I've see everywhere,I see on Reddit and everything. So, they signed a deal and people are saying they're disloyal, back-stabbing,(etc).I don't buy that at all.In the exact same position, let's say, Opie got fired and was me and Jimmy sitting there and they held our contracts until October, and Opie goes do something else, of course I would sign. Why wouldn't I ? for more money especially? less hours? Of course, you'd sign.

(etc)

I tried to transcript this part and not uploading anything, if you're not happy Go fuck yourself and buy the AC show.

PS- Don't give me shit, nazi grammar's.It's late, where I am and I'm tired.

I'm sorry dude, your phone crapped out.

Anyone want to try to gauge what level of autism this guy has for typing this?

Over 9000 clearly.

Do you think he's on the spectrum?

Even if you don't read the words you can tell he's strongly and clearly on the spectrum.

I, for one, appreciate the job you've done transcribing Ant's take on the situation everyone loves to speculate about. Good work, sir.

I read every word and appreciate what you did but my god, I bet you are just a dry pair of testicles at a party.

He would be my favorite guy at the party. Any O&A fan is instant friend. Esp out here; we are not many. We're like the Fremin from Dune.

This makes me think Opie is happier about Ant going than he's letting on.

yeah it seems like opies the one who's been wanting to do his own thing. he's projecting.

I doubt it. When they had their fight years ago Opie said that Ant would leave and do a political show. Opie comes off as if he expected Ant not to re-sign at anytime to do his own thing. I mean Ant built his own studio over years and management put a stop to LFTC. I can see if I was in Opie's shoes how he could interpret Ant's actions over the years as being ready to walk at any moment.

From reading this it seemed Ant didn't want to leave but was making sure if he did or was fired he had something to fall back on.

You can reverse that as well. Opie swearing he's not going to resign leading up to every contract, especially this one, etc. You can interpret that as Opie getting ready to leave, and Ant needing something to fall back on.

That's what I'm saying. I think opie lead ant to make a back up plan just in case so opie not realizing he comes off this way he interprets it as ant wants to branch out. Opie'a threats to leave always felt like he wanted to retire and it's clear ant and jim want to keep doing things even if the show went away.

Agreed.

I doubt it, I think Opie is making the best of a shitty situation.

Had Ant sat around and done nothing after being canned- I thing they would have all gotten together and done something.

But since Ant has been very successful on his own he's not interested in going back to all the SxM crap they bitch about endlessless- and there's no way Opie is going to go "work for Ant".

So given that he's got a wife and 2 kids and needs a job, the easiest thing for him to do was to sign back up for another round of easy paychecks where he basically just needs to show up 4 days a week.

Anthony and Opie clearly have a communication problem, with neither dude seemingly willing to reach out to the other.

The difference is, Anthony doesn't feel compelled to make up self-serving shit about Opie and run with it. I wouldn't have handled this aspect of the situation as diplomatically as Anthony apparently has thus far.

This could get ugly, if Opie tries to address Anthony's comments, and doubles down on his bs, which is a very real possibility.

And if you listen closely, you can hear serious-Jimmy warming up, ready to fight passionately for both sides, while saying absolutely nothing.

I'm sure he'll "see where each of them is coming from".

How many faces can one man have?

Anthony and Opie clearly have a communication problem, with neither dude seemingly willing to reach out to the other.

While I think talk of "They secretly hate each other" is overblown, it's obvious for years that they've just been merely co-workers for a long time, I doubt either cares what the other says that much, especially since each seems happy for the other.

EVERY time contract negotiations came around, it was painfully evident to me everything Ant said here was true. He rarely complained about management, or at least nowhere near the practically daily level Opie did. I always got the feeling that he would handle whatever bullshit, because it was a cush gig that paid a fortune, and the problems of those two didn't add up to a hill of beans in comparison.

Conversely, funny as he still was and as much as I still loved him, Ant seemed to be kind of on auto pilot for years. It seemed like he could take or leave the show, passion wise. The guy just showed up for 3 hours and got paid. That starts really grating on me when I listen to podcasts where the hosts are passionate about their shows, and love/thank their listeners and show a lot of appreciation & gratitude. That kind of shit goes a long way with me and endears the hell out of a show for me. In comparison, even though O&A started it all for me, you had one guy that could generally give a shit if he was there or not, and the other constantly bitching about and at his fans/listeners. "THEY'RE PAYING YOUR SALARY, YOU ASS!" (Scrooged)

Opie is looking more and more like Hoohoo Junior.

Hoo Hoo Too.

Yea opie really is a fucking piece of shit. He makes that up because he doesnt want to work with ant anymore which is ironic because ant is the only reason he isnt playing songs in some shit ass town

Who down-voted this? Does Opie have 4 reddit accounts?

Its how the philly crew does

He unironically does have a crew that sweeps through in the morning downvoting shit.

LOL! It was at "0" when I bumped it up. What sneaky little douches.

Opie gets annoyed when people say that he doesn't like Ant. But why does he make up shit about Ant, and spew it on his shitty new show? Maybe he should stop speaking for other people.

It kind of makes you wonder if Opie offered up all this bullshit to Scott during negotiations?? Like Greenstein asked about Ants status before they re signed; and Olie said "No Mr. Greenstein Sir! Ant is very happy with what he's doing now, and he's been wanting to leave Sirius for a long time. And then Greenstein said "Opie!, Get your hands out of my pants!!"

It's obvious that Ant still misses Sirius, and still wants to be there. And he's scorned by what happened. And then Opie is making up shit about Ant, and telling it on the air for management to hear?

If I was Anthony; I would be out of my mind fucking pissed at Opie!

It was obviously just opie's speculation. Remember, they haven't really talked a whole lot since the firing

Opie's biggest problem is that during the 2,000 times he whined about management like a little pussy; he ALWAYS threatened to quit. But if you noticed; he was to much of a coward to say "I" should quit. He always said "WE" should quit.

He'd run his fucking mouth about management, and in doing so; he was throwing Jim & Ant under the bus, without asking them if they're happy. Poor Jim and Ant would sit quietly. Ant confirmed that a couple days ago. He said he Opie always tried to re sign one year at a time, and Ant wanted to re sign decade long contracts.

So after years of Opie throwing Ant & Jin under the bus; because he cares about nobody but Opie. Now he is a Company Yes Man. I know he's now sucking Greenstein's dick, though I'm not sure if he swallows yet. Even if he did; he would still have more dignity than he does singing managements praises everyday.

I want to go back and re-listen to those episodes now. I just got done listening to that episode of TACS about an hour ago. How awkward it would be just to hear the silence, knowing that Ant loves his job. (Edit: entire post)

You're right man. It's kind of sad. Ant talks about how happy he is now; but you can definitely tell he is still really upset about the firing. I can't speak for others, but like I said before. I think Opie saying that Ant has wanted out of Sirius for a long time, was nothing more than a Fuck You to Ant!

Great job dude. Thanks so much for this. I learned a shitload. Just proves the massive douchebags on this site. I'd give gold if I could find some cash or get paid for giving oral to chicks but goddam maybe a little autism? But please do more of this.

this is clearly what we've all been feeling over the years, opster is full of shit, jaded and at times jealous of what Ant did with the opportunity that opster gave him.

If Opie hadn't been lying about this situation, why in the hell wouldn't he ask Anthony about the logistics of the internet subscription service? Why not ask for ballpark figures of the initial signups and how much revenue was coming in(especially how many year subscriptions were bought).

I get not wanting to go to Anthony's house for a broadcast, but the money they'd be bringing in, they'd be able to rent a space that would only be a fraction of what they pay for their apartments in the city.

I just don't understand why Jimmy never talked about joining Anthony for the internet service. If he's worried about exposure I'm sure the free clips and doing his own show here and there would keep giving him enough exposure to sell tickets to his shows.

because money... ant will NEVER make what he made on the show, doesn't mean he wants to or has to or even cares to, but the other two do care enough to sell themselves out to a shitty company and continue to do shit radio while their popularity declines into nothingness as their bank accounts remain full. It's a choice they made and my choice was to not listen to them ever since Ant left.

Sure it's about money so when it was said they couldn't walk because of contracts... walking was never an option for them AND THAT'S FINE. What isn't fine is straight up lying to the fans. Opie keeps saying the dream is alive, Anthony believes it's false and just a business ploy. It's not like management hasn't lied to them year after year about other things and they both had no problem re-signing then either.

Because Opie probably just doesn't want to do what Anthony is doing.

Which is fine, just don't lie about it. The only reason you lie about it is to keep some people hanging on that it'll go back to how it was.

Honestly, with Opie talking about how much he hates his nickname, NOW was the time to change his on air name to his real name. Make a complete break from the old show.

Thank you for your paragraphs.

Thanks for transcribing/recapping all that.

What time did he go into this?

And fuck all the ADHD cousin-fuckers who struggled to get through your post; everybody got the gist.

They're just being cunts.

Opie is such a fucking liar

Opie doesn't like ant. He resents him for being more talented with less radio experience.

He projects it all on to ant not liking him. End of story.

Anthony said everything he needed to on the Rich Vos show. Opie used the "I dont know if i am going to re-sign" bullshit contract tactic without telling Ant and it made ant think about the possibility of having to make money without Opie.

So he put together LFTC in his basement as a investment to the future of his career.

Ant was prepared because of Opies "im not re-signing" lie we get every September.

"I guess that come though (laughs) Big things did get changed (laughs) I got throwned out (laughs) alright, that solves it (still laughing)." - Anthony Cumia

All of you queens in a tizzy over something a reasonable person like Anthony (well, somewhat) understands. Start another petition over it.

i like makING WEREWOLF MOVIES!

You have done Gods work son.

Thank you.

You idiots keep trying to start shit between Opie and Anthony by reading so deep into everything. It's pathetic.

It's quite deep, I mean you'd have to look at 2 different statements, 1 of them something Opie has said multiple times.

Opie: Anthony wanted to go off and do his own show.

Anthony: No I didn't!

It's really hard to figure out someone is lying and someone isn't.

The only person who has talked about walking away for YEARS was Opie. Anthony and Jimmy have been pretty transparent about re-signing over and over.

The only real question is why Opie keeps lying, I guess that's where the reading deep comes into play. Who knows, maybe people who have been spending a couple hundred dollars a year to listen to them actually want to know what's really going on. Weird huh?

Why does one have to be lying? It could just be a miscommunication, or something they never really talked about.

It's kinda completely opposite answers... Opie - HE wants to do his own thing, Anthony - No I didn't.

If they never really talked about it, why would Opie say time after time that Anthony wanted to do his own thing. In my opinion Opie was the one who wanted to do something different which would cause a lot of problems with the fan base.

I think, like all of us are doing here, he's assuming.

You'd think he'd know Anthony a tiny bit better then the fans do. At no time have I felt Anthony was ready to leave, he's mentioned many times he enjoys everything but the drive and management. Opie is the one who has threatened not to come back at the end of a contract.

I think it's much easier to assume that Opie is the one that wants to go do his own thing, he's mentioned many times how he's had "fun" doing his own thing now. I think his "family" did have a problem with the show that has generated him millions of dollars and that is influencing his decisions.

To me, Opie is now the dreaded "hole" but tries to be "edgy" from time to time so he's not lumped into that name. I'm not talking the old Opie, I'm talking the current one.

By the way, remember them making fun of TMZ and asking fans for their thoughts... from today...

opie radio ‏@OpieRadio 6h6 hours ago Here's the cartoon from the Boston Herald that's getting a lot of heat today. Thoughts? http://instagram.com/p/tpi4jTLhZG/

And Anthony mentioned many times after he was fired how much he was glad to be rid of Sirius and how it worked out better for him to be on his own.

There are plenty of legit reasons to hate on Opie. You're free to make up your own narrative as to what happened, but I think this false reality that people in this sub have created is dumb.

Sure, after he saw that an internet subscription based model can work for him, before August 1st he had no idea... hence him being stuck on his sofa the first 2 days after being fired and it took KTC to get him to start moving forward. That doesn't sound like someone who was ready to go out on their own.

There's just too many pieces of data that point towards Opie lying about the situation trying to move on from co-hosting with Anthony. I just happen to think Opie doesn't want to be the "bad guy" breaking up the team but he absolutely wanted to break up the team or change the format to a "safer" show.

I guess I'll just agree to disagree. Again, this is all painting a reality that people who hate on Opie (valid or not, that's not the point) have created based on their personal biases. All of this is speculation being passed off as fact.

I'm going off of mostly fact but also connecting the dots. For some reason I've always known coworkers who were ready to move on and those who wanted to stay, it seems odd to see how Opie could be so wrong doesn't it... unless of course there's alternative motives for saying what he said.

It comes down to this... Either Opie has alternative motives by saying the complete opposite of what Anthony wanted or he's completely out of touch with someone he's worked with for 20 years. I don't see how the later could be true, but that's my opinion, but I don't see a 3rd option in there for why he'd be saying completely the opposite of someone he's worked with for 20 years.

Everything he said makes perfect sense. For a gun nut racist, Anthony is levelheaded as hell.

It's just infuriating how well his firing worked out for Sirius/XM. That's the part I hate.

Opie got a 30 procent pay bump and fridays off. it's not the Opie and Jim show. Its the Opie show feat Jim Norton as co-Host. He lets Jim carry the show by inviting his comedian friends (which Opie always felt superior towards).

Jim Norton signed up to continue to get a stable paycheck. It is understandable for both of them to re-sign.

When Opie says "It's obvious Ant was ready to do his own thing", he's saying "When Anthony got fired, he was ready to do his own thing, and now he's off doing that other thing". He's not saying Anthony was planning on leaving the show before he got fired.

Shhh, don't disturb the narrative.

You're a fucking weirdo.

how many times did you have to pause and rewind?

Transcription isn't that hard if you can type pretty quickly.

This is psychopathic.

i don't get why everyone's beating you up and calling you autistic. i'm too cheap to buy the ACS at the moment, so i appreciate you clearing the air regarding this situation with O & J for all us non-ACS subscribers by reproducing the exact segment verbatim. by doing this you aren't leaving anything open for interpretation, its exactly what AC said. thank you for your service, brotherman.

I don't interpret what Opie says about this to mean he thinks Ant was going to leave the show. I take it to mean he thinks Ant is relishing the opportunity and wants to see how he can do on his own, now that he was pushed to do it by getting fired.

I don't take it to mean that Opie thought Anthony was going to leave the show and I don't think that's what he meant. I think that's what fans took it to mean because a lot of fans aren't great at getting what the guys mean sometimes. So Ant is basically responding to a game of telephone.

[deleted]

Holy jesus fucking shit. I thought you'd written too much for one post, scrolled down and saw that was only half of it. You're going to have to condense this down if you're trying a make a point, no way I'm reading all of that shit.

[deleted]

You should separate the word "did" and the "."

A quote from Anthony about not re-signing. It would've been helpful if you had just linked to audio of it.

[deleted]

Sorry reading is so hard for you

Calm your shit down, man; this guy put a lot of effort into transcribing a LFTC show, and English is obviously not a language familiar to him. BRAVO Wurmspiralmashine!

maybe an audio transcription computer program?? it is 2014!!!

TLDR version?

Summary motherfucker, too longwinded for my taste.

Thanks for all the unecessary information.

You could have summarized that in like 3 paragraphs you fuckhead.

I wasn't going to say anything about the atrocious punctuation, or the complete changing of words, but what the fuck is a "nazi grammar's" ? How do you fuck up "grammar nazi" and not expect someone to say something?

I was actually surprised it wasn't spelled "grammer".

Thanks for this transcript. I don't think I should have payments to the Aryan Nation on my credit card so I wouldn't have been able to know this.

where's reddit's equivalent of twitter's 140 character limit. please god.

Christ! I took a nap half way through the post, and then read the rest when I woke up.

Dude. You're crazy. At least proofread your stuff because it's really hard to follow.

Their not there.

We were halfway through appetizers at Cherche Midi, passing the steak tartare and spreading anchovy toasts with softly jiggly Parmesan custard, when one of my guests suddenly tilted his head and listened. He looked like the boy in a tornado movie who notices that the birds have stopped singing.

“There’s no music,” he said. “They have speakers all over the dining room, but they’re not using them.”

The restaurateur Keith McNally opened Cherche Midi in June on the corner of Houston Street and the Bowery, in a neighborhood where you don’t go out to dinner unless you are prepared to shout over some Pavement song the chef loved in college. But we were talking, with no recorded soundtrack, as if we were in some Continental restaurant off Sutton Place in 1964 eating veal Orloff by candlelight.

This is the paradox of Mr. McNally. Food writers who were still eating applesauce through a straw when he opened his first restaurant (the Odeon, 1980) write about him with the same reverence that music writers have for Leonard Cohen. He’s “the king of cool,” the restaurateur who “owns NYC.” Yet when it comes to current dining trends, particularly those in favor downtown, Mr. McNally shows a healthy disregard, verging at times on hostility.

Of the six restaurants he operates between 14th Street and Canal Street, Cherche Midi may be his most thorough repudiation of the downtown scene. It isn’t just music that’s missing. There’s almost no view of the street. Tapas, shared plates, tasting menus, wine pairings, “Chef recommends,” two-hour waits for a table the size of a chessboard — no, none of that. Nor did Cherche Midi’s servers try to tell me “how the menu works,” as if it were some complicated and expensive piece of machinery that I was likely to break.

In Mr. McNally’s restaurants, chefs are rarely treated like stars. At Cherche Midi, two men, Shane McBride and Daniel Parilla, share the work and the credit. As a result, perhaps, their cooking is almost egoless; it’s not about what they want. It’s about what you want, especially if that happens to be red meat and French wine.

The prime rib may be the only dish at Cherche Midi that could be accused of trying to make an impression. The dark, roasted edges had the irresistible intensity of the bark on great barbecued brisket, even on the night they were aggressively salted. Lending this slab of dry-aged beef a bit of finesse is the side dish of pommes soufflées, like inflatable potato chips or, as one guest said, “gluten-free beignets.”

The menu gives three more main-course slots to beef. Steak frites does a fine impersonation of a Parisian bistro steak, the kind you don’t mind chewing and chewing between glasses of the house Beaujolais Villages, served at Cherche Midi in an $18 carafe. Filet mignon au poivre is far more tender, of course, with less sacrifice in flavor than usual. The tall, compact, rather lean, drip-free and wholly excellent burger is made from dry-aged prime rib; if you put your nose close enough, you can smell the meat locker right through the aroma of onion-bacon jam. All three dishes come with dark, skinny fries.

Cherche Midi is so good with beef that even the best of the other main courses may register as a half step down: a pot of fat, clean mussels with bits of preserved lemon clinging to them; a roast chicken done right; a salade niçoise that pays attention to the last detail, including, in a wonderful departure from tradition, the pile of smashed potato salad at the bottom of the bowl.

Here and there, the kitchen tends to overembellish. The decent roasted salmon comes with a lentil salad that tries to do too many things at once, and limp white stewed onions and fennel did not give skate Grenobloise (billed as meunière) anything that it really needed. It would be nice, too, to taste the meat under the aggressive seasoning in the steak tartare appetizer, given the chefs are clearly buying good beef. At least it made a strong impression, which is more than I can say for the $18 heirloom tomato salad. Heirlooms from where, exactly? Food Emporium?

Still, unless you are coming to Cherche Midi to commune with the essence of summer, it is a good enough salad. The desserts are much better than that. The floating islands, the mocha pot de crème, the small pink raspberry soufflé hovering above a bed of warm berries — the lineup is one argument after another for bringing back old-fashioned pleasures.

After a recent tour of all his restaurants, I think Mr. McNally’s great talent may be knowing which things are worth worrying about and which can get by with being just good enough. At Morandi, the main courses were almost impressive in their mediocrity, but the pasta was just swell, which may be all the place needs to keep its chairs full. The short-rib patty melt was the only good dish on a table full of disappointments at Schiller’s Liquor Bar, but I enjoyed myself more than I have at far better restaurants.

There is a limit, though, and Balthazar is approaching it. The cooking, under Mr. McBride, has become utterly mundane, a pretty but flavorless imitation of French food of the kind found at any generic fake bistro. Cherche Midi’s salade niçoise is delicious from start to finish; Balthazar’s is a bowl of ingredients that can’t remember what they’re supposed to taste like. How can the same chef and the same restaurateur be responsible for both?

Mr. McNally does worry about service, which at Cherche Midi manages to be everywhere without crossing the line to helicopter waitering. And, of course, he worries about the interiors. Cherche Midi’s is lovely. Outside is a dystopian intersection. You’d never know it in the dining room, which feels intimate, almost private, although of course every face is on display, bathed in light the color of apricot jam.

For three decades, Mr. McNally has been rooting around in the same Lego kit: distressed mirrors, chipped subway tiles, bottles backlighted to look like stained glass. In his hands, these well-worn tricks give restaurants the battered nobility of a vintage Saab. When anyone else tries, they end up with a 1986 Ford Escort. Sets and lighting will never be the whole show.

I missed it. What was that?

A long meaningless wall of text that no one will read. Trying to get inside OP's head.

I read it and the op. You guys should maybe pick up a book sometime

You shouldn't be transcribing audio if you're retarded. Fucking dope.

I got the gist. It's sad to see Ant left out of the party. He's been reduced to a podcaster with ugly racist fans that pay him to Mein Kampf it up monday through thursday.

At least Jim and Opie are doing the noble work of keeping a place for him while they wait for SiriusXm to hire Ant back.

UHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

mein kampf it up my friend
