Opie reminds me every day that he's a dunce. Whereas Media Matters literally only writes about media figures saying offensive/incorrect things. People are acting as if Deadspin's only function is to be the unbearable social justice police, because one of their dozens of contributors writes one article they disagree with every couple of months or so. Deadspin posts an article about WJFK advertising Chad Duke's new show by posting a bunch of old clips featuring Chad Dukes saying "fag", and this subreddit idiotically screeches that they're trying to get a radio host fired, even though the article very clearly points out that they're writing about the radio station obviously not having listened to the clips beforehand: "There's no year given, but, it's an awfully hard listen in 2014. The takeaways from the vintage segment are: 1) Times have changed, and 2) nobody at WJFK vetted the clip before posting it. It's full of dated meanness and homophobic slurs that nobody—on air or off—uses for cheap giggles anymore." Call the writer too PC if you're a big fan of epithets, but no one's calling for Dukes' head--they very clearly point out that they are old clips, and not that big a deal at the times they were said. Deadspin writes a lot about media failing to do their jobs well--from plagiarism, to not attributing sources, to not making sense (old guard writers mocking sabermetrics), to being complete hacks (Rick Reilly). If someone swears on ESPN, they'll post the video. Not to get people fired, but because it's mildly interesting.

They report on the controversy, and then go back and find past incidents to fuel the controversy even more.

Deadspin went into Stephen A. Smith's past and found other comments he made about domestic violence to further fan the flames of Internet outrage. That's what Gawker did to Anthony. Past incidents didn't catch fire on their own, but they might if we attach them to this current controversy.

So it can be argued that there is an agenda there.

But there's actual context with Stephen A. Smith and Deadspin. This isn't just pouncing in the one mistake he's ever made. They've always written about dumb things he said. Probably hundreds of articles. Because he's a buffoonish, terrible broadcaster.

But they took Smith out of context. Calling him a supporter of domestic violence when that's not at all what he said.

Nnnnnope. They never said anything of the sort. They just took him to task for saying (very clumsily) that woman need to not provoke their own beatings. I just read every word they printed on the matter, and they never come close to accusing him of supporting domestic violence. They always were talking about his provocation remarks:

They're just saying what every other media outlet said--he said something very clumsily. It's like if when Kobe Bryant was under suspicion of rape, Smith had done a monologue about about woman need to not put themselves in a position to be raped. Sure, it's technically good-hearted advice to the women of the world, but it's essentially putting blame on the victim of a crime. And if he was trying to use code words to say that Rice's fiancee had been attacking him prior to his punch, he needs to come right out and say it--It just sounded like "What do you expect a man to do when you're annoying him?"

I agree that it was clumsily spoken and he should've just said another word entirely or be more specific without a code word. I guess I'm more annoyed by the "outrage" of the comment from the media in general and the whole "he's condoning wife beating and is blaming the victim" when he obviously wasn't doing that.
