A humble opinion of a not-so-longtime listener of O&A on the current state of the show.

I'm a 21-year old who discovered Howard Stern on youtube a couple of years ago. I'd always seen suggestions to the right of Stern's videos about Opie and Anthony, but never bothered to click because the name "Opie" wasn't really tempting. I was soon really bored by Howard's current stuff and how it became more mellow and felt slightly woman-oriented (What kind of guy would give a flying fuck about Katie Couric or Beth's cats.

So I decided to give O&A a try, and my first videos were with Louis CK. Oh. My. God. I laughed the hardest I ever have in my life. And when the Louis stuff was consumed, I was introduced to Patrice. Oh. My. God. I soon became addicted to the show and would spend countless hours listening to classic bits and have learned a lot about the history of the show

Now, as for what happened to the show, I was kind of shocked and in disbelief of what happened. BUT, I have to say I was really excited about the shake up. It was really entertaining to see the drama unfold and anticipate what happens next, especially with how I felt the show became repetitive and boring. I never really felt bad for Anthony because he's more successful than myself and will continue to be on both social and financial levels.

As for what I wanted to point out with this post, it's that I'm really enjoying the new energy of the show. It doesn't feel as angry or negative as it used to be despite Opie's constant whining and bitching. Jim is WAY more relaxed since he doesn't have to up anthony or "out-shock" him with jokes about him being gay and sucking trannys. I actually feel like the show is kind of endearing, which I enjoy, but maybe that's because I'm just a kid.

I also don't see opie and ant coming back together. Ant's podcast will be successful but it will be going in a slightly more right-wing direction, which opie and jim would feel weird about. He's invested too much into the show and building it that I don't see him joining opie if he had his own show somewhere else. Quite frankly, I wouldn't mind if opie and jim renewed with sirius. That's my 2 cents.

That is what would keep the show going on slow days, though. That is what kept it listenable every weekday. The segments you consumed online were all of the top cream of the show from years past. The daily grind needs that back-and-forth repertoire that Jim and Opie just don't have.

The truth is only a couple shows a month, at best(not recently), are worth listening to ever again. But what kept us listening everyday was the off-chance that Ant would have one of his beautiful one-liners that would send Jim into his wheezing gaffaw.

This general sentiment is what I specifically don't like about the direction of the show. I don't need another 'kind, gentle, passive, understanding, relaxing' radio show in this already nerfed down world where censorship and catering to one's feelings is priority. Anthony, right or wrong, brought a different perspective to the show which led to entertaining discussions. Listening to Opie & Jim talk about Biggie Smalls the other day made me cringe. It was two old men discussing the rap genre with no interesting insight, at least Ant would have thrown some curveball into the mix rather that blab on about nothing other than how out of touch they are with the rap scene.

They're doing what the fans have always wanted and loading up on comedians. Just wait until they run out of them... Hoo boy.

Come one man, that not the right attitude. Reach for the stars!

lol I'm not saying I'm a failure, it's just that Anthony is like a rock star.

You can too

He's being a smart arse.

Oh

I wasnt

Oh

I had the same problem with the name Opie. My one buddy tried to get me to listen to these guys years ago and I wouldn't do it because of the name "Opie" ha. It was because of Bill Burr and Patrice that I started listening because I ran out of videos on youtube to watch of theirs so I decided to listen to them on Opie and Anthony. What a great decision that was. It's amazing that something as silly as thinking the name Opie is awful is enough to keep people from trying out the show.

I never understood how the name Opie was something others were turned off by, I guess it's a bit goofy sounding but doesn't stand out to me as being that unusual.

It made me think that their show was gonna be some goofy sorta thing and I never liked that kind of show. Opie just sounds like a "made-for-radio" name so I assumed it would be a shitty, typical radio show.

haha true, I think I had the same impression about the show initially. I'm sure I looked like a tool when voicing my thoughts on the firing to friends on my FB who have never sat through a few shows or even heard about O&A.

I honestly think if my buddy said to me "hey you should check out the Greg and Anthony Show I would have said alright." The same thing happened to me a year or so ago when my one friend told me to check out "Free Beer and Hot Wings" (they had just become syndicated on terrestrial in my area) and I told him "I refuse to listen to a show by that name." Due to my work hours (and refusing to listen to the pre show) I caved and tuned into them and it turns out it was a pretty fuckin funny show. It's the old "don't judge a radio show by it's shitty name" adage.

"The Gregg & Jim Show" We've figured things out.

What you just mentioned is that you loved listening to great comedians on O&A. Since ant got fired they have lined up great comedians every single day. The point is the show is good with just the boys and great when they add in other great comics. That's the whole secret of the show really.

I do understand that, and that's probably why the show was boring before Ant left, they just weren't having any regular comedians in. My remarks about the show are about when there are no guests in.

tssss 2 cents fawking long post more like 40 cents tsssss

oh chip.

Fawk yeh im fukin killin or sumpthin

I agree with you 100%, but I think this is the typical outlook.

The show is surprisingly good following the absence of Ant. But it is still hard to listen to Opie talk to guests and jimmy without Gomez Addams chiming in. There was a point in the show today when they said "monkey" and I was waiting for a bell to ring.

Let the bell ring in your head

It always does.

We're not gonna know anything about how good or bad the new show is until all their comedian friends are busy and they do a week of radio without help. As a fellow 21 year old late-to-the-party listener, we should all save judgement for September, at least.
