He's an overly sensitive self centered 50 year old frat boy who interrupts(well, did interrupt) people constantly and tries to be funny with douchy dad jokes. I know all the counter arguments to this - he steers the ship, created the show, is loyal, etc. Fine, if you want to like Opie go ahead, nobody is stopping you.

I think the thing I hate most is the noise-making. He's intentionally obnoxious and irritating into the mic, dozens of times per show. Scream-belching, intentionally bad/loud singing, all the miscellaneous noises. He knows there are people out there it pisses off and he thinks it makes him Andy Kaufman. But he's not Andy Kaufman. He's just an unfunny, unconfident douche.

I know I've been listening too long, because just the sound of his voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

His voice to me sounds like .... stupid. I mean it sounds like a physical quantity of Stupid, with a capital S. It's like somebody turned Stupid into liquid form, poured it into a human-shaped container, and named that container Gregg Hughes. And when he talks he shoots Stupid into the mic, through the air, out my speakers, and into my ear. It's a non-stop audio assault.

If you can't hear it yet, isolate his "ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho" laugh, and listen to it in a loop for about 6 hours straight. That should catch you up.

I don't hate him. He does some things that irritate me, just like a lot of people do (ok, maybe a little more than that), but I don't hate him.

I hate how un-selfaware he is. He interrupts people almost every sentence, when someone is talking you can actually hear him trying to butt in mid word. -He constantly derails interesting conversations that he can't relate to (game of thrones discussion to talk about his kid, stopped ant from talking about his jaguar to talk about his high school). -He is just dumb and has stupid ignorant opinions "man of steel couldnt say superman because of copyrights". He was awful. Anthony and Jimmys cross to bear. Just a true, absolute burden that they were stuck with because he started what was a horrible incarnation of the show 20 years ago.

To those who defend him: if he didn't start the show, and was just someone they brought in for a week to see how he did, do you REALLY think Opie would be on that team based on his talents alone? Do you really think he would be called back? Do you really think Anthony and Jimmy would like him being there?

What I'll never understand is: these guys (haters) liked the show at some point, right? well, opie was always on board, so how do you know that the show would be better without opie? Ever REALLY watched a LFTC-Episode? It's ok, but nothing compared to O&A.

We like the show and think Jim & Ant are funny but don't like Opie. Why do you give a shit about whether people like him or not? Why don't you take your own advice and ignore these comments which are answering OP's question and move on.

Jim, Ant, and the horde of comics that have made dozens of appearances each, and who made it funnier than any sitcom or radio show in history. It's the only place to go for that specific type of humor in that high of a concentration, and these babies think we ought to cut it out of our lives completely just because we have a problem with one component of it.
