Favorite Hour of standup?
11 2014-07-12 by RahnBayngtin
Saw Metzger's White Precious last night and it was REALLY good. Git me to thinking what some of the better hour specials have been. 2 rules:
We all know Louie is great. Can we just say Shameless (? IDK, the one with "faggot-cunt-nigger-deer") is number 1. What is your SECOND favorite hour.
RAW was also spectacular but its just about 30 years old. Favorite post-2000 special.

Elephant in the room is honestly the best stand up I've ever heard. Loved it.

The bit about playing high school football and paralyzing an opposing player and then stealing his socks to tie around the helmet had me dying.
3 PlayerDelCarmen 2014-07-12

9 captainpissclams 2014-07-12
The Stanhope album blew my mind. One of the best ever without a doubt.
2 WiretapStudios 2014-07-12
I will co-sign all these, also my favorites. I've seen all three live as well, and I was squirting tears five minutes into all of them.
1 FJaxJones 2014-07-12
YES
Stanhope's Before Turning The Gun On Himself is a fucking masterpiece

Killing Them Softly by Dave Chappelle

I'll take Bill Burr's 'You People Are all the Same' over any of his contemporaries' specials. Even Louis.
7 RahnBayngtin 2014-07-12
Its funny if you ask people their favorite burr special they all say something different. I liked "let it go" because it had some if my favorite bits: the self checkout, him pouring a glass of water on a child, "rescuing" a dog."
The hardest i laughed ever at burr: when he talks about adopting a bull dog and all of their respatory problems. "Why dont i just adopt a retired NFL lineman? Here honey, this is Jim Jeffcoat. Were gona call him Spot"
4 Spekk10 2014-07-12
Really excited for his new special. Bill hit another level.
1 Somewhatcerulean 2014-07-12
"What are you, a faaaag" is my favorite (post 2000 stand up special) comedy bit of all time.
1 WiretapStudios 2014-07-12
Let It Go is my favorite too, I've watched it a dozen times now. It always cheers me up if I had a shit day because it's caustic, razor sharp, but hysterical and has heart. Same for Elephant in the Room from Patrice. They are hitting all the marks that a lot of even big comics miss some of.
1 RahnBayngtin 2014-07-12
Cant agree more. I guess its the best meter on how to judge a stand up set: replay-ability. But i went out and bought "Let It Go" on iTunes and will still throw it on like once a month. I do have a job where i can use headphones 40+ hrs a week tho...
1 WiretapStudios 2014-07-12
Oh they are all great, that's just my favorite. His weekly podcast is great too. Before podcasts I worked in the basement of this bank filing stuff, and used to torrent live sets from comics and just play them on repeat. I started with music but whipped through 8 albums in a day and that got old quickly. I'm glad podcasts came along as I had memorized every comics stand up specials, all of Henry Rollins spoken word, Hunter Thompson live, and all this other counterculture live stuff. Free fresh content from people is amazing.
1 Chip--Chipperson 2014-07-12
thats the one
1 MonsteRain 2014-07-12
I should watch that again, 'Let it Go' was my favorite from Bill

Burr's material Is genius , but his voice is bit too much when he's yelling.
16 Slippery_Slope_Guy 2014-07-12
I'll toss in Norm MacDonald's "Me Doing Stand Up" as my favorite hour from the past five years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1isPK83SxU&feature=kp

Doug Stanhope - Deadbeat Hero
12 AntsCamera 2014-07-12
Stanhope gets so little respect as a comic.
I went on vacation to the Pacific NW and saw him in Seattle. He ripped some loud bitch apart in the audience, then seamlessly transferred back into his act. Stanhope is a fucking genius.
I wish he did more east coast gigs, Come to Jersey! I am on a DUI suspension so I can't drive.
1 samsterlicious 2014-07-12
what did he say to her? had a discussion with him in bum fuck nc about corrupt cops. been my favorite comic since
7 BumbiBestie 2014-07-12
Beer Hall Putsch is great, too
3 APurpleSuit 2014-07-12
His detailed bit about his gay NFL fantasy is fantastic.
11 MonsteRain 2014-07-12
Jim Jeffries is great, the hour he just filmed will be great when it comes out but I think 'I Swear to God' is my favorite by him.
8 Ebhagz 2014-07-12
Dave Chappelle's Killing Them Softly and For What its Worth
Chris Rock Bring the Pain
Carlin had a bunch of great hours
8 LCFlowers 2014-07-12
Dave Attell - Skanks for the memories ( audio only)
6 Ebhagz 2014-07-12
Also Bill Burr has consistently good specials I can't really pick a favorite maybe, "You People Are All The Same."
I liked "Shameless" by Louis CK
2 CUNTYMOM 2014-07-12
let it go was my personal favorite
1 NoremacMartin 2014-07-12
Let It Go was way better than You People Are All The Same. Both are solid though.

My post-2000 favourites: Doug Stanhope - No Refunds, Bill Burr - Why Do I Do This, and anything Neil Hamburger. I can't wait to see Metzger, he was so fucking good on Comedy Underground. Hope that gets another season.
2 WiretapStudios 2014-07-12
Do you listen to Race Wars with Kurt? It's pretty fucking funny.
1 royorbisonslunchbox 2014-07-12
Yeah, I love that podcast. Sherrod and he have great chemistry.
2 freeponyrides 2014-07-12
I love when Neil Hamburger retweets 20 people in a row saying they got sick at taco bell.
4 Lasagna_Hat 2014-07-12
Doug Stanhope- Beer Hall Putsch
It's on Netflix. He talks about "bar-backing" his mother's suicide while wearing a Pea-Soup colored leisure suit. I really think it's his best special since No Refunds
2 APurpleSuit 2014-07-12
I loved this bit.

It's an obvious answer but Louis C.K.'s Hilarious & Shameless specials are my favourites.
You don't realise how spoilt you are in America with good comics, Louis C.K., Chris Rock, Bill Burr, Stanhope, etc.
Try watching Live at the Apollo, even the main acts like Michael McIntyre and Jack Whitehall are just awful.
8 RahnBayngtin 2014-07-12
Everytime i hear of Euro comics i just think of Patrice. They all sound like "Ian McGigglepuss"
1 [deleted] 2014-07-12
That sounds brilliant, is that a quote from him on the show?
1 RahnBayngtin 2014-07-12
Yes, not positive if its Ian McGigglepuss but something like that
2 rawdoggydogg 2014-07-12
So fucking true man.. I don't even bother arguing with other Brits any more
3 havingmadfun 2014-07-12
What was the name of chapelles first standup, with the baby drug dealer? That was one of my all time favorite.
5 Spekk10 2014-07-12
Killen' Them Softly
1 havingmadfun 2014-07-12
yes, thank you
3 Silent-Rob 2014-07-12
Patrice O'Neal... the set I got to see at Stand Up Live in Phoenix just a few months before he passed. :(
3 no1raniuk 2014-07-12
Patrice takes it for me. Elephant in the Room is the special I've watched the most times so that puts it #1 for me personally. Let It Go by Bill Burr is definitely worth a shout too.
3 packitchofsositch 2014-07-12
It would be one of Carlin's but I'm not sure which.
Jimmy has often mentioned that his favorite Carlin special was 1999 You Are All Diseased, because it's "just so mean". Hard to argue with that choice. I don't like the goofy 70s Carlin that much. Not as much bitterness or cynicism. His meanness progressed from a complete goofball in the 70s, to more of a sarcastic, wordy smartass in the 80s, to a social critic in the early 90s to a misanthropist in YAAD. The 2 specials before YAAD were a mix, with a good deal of acerbic social cynicism, but still a lot of his absurd observational stuff. I might have to go with one of those two: 1992 Jammin in NY or 1996 Back in Town.
3 numba13 2014-07-12
Doug Stanhope - Something To Take The Edge Off
George Carlin - You Are All Diseased
2 Lasagna_Hat 2014-07-12
Something To Take The Edge Off is one of the most underrated comedy albums
If nobody knows, guitarist Henry Phillips plays live with Doug Stanhope's stand-up. Doug's bits have this hypnotic rhythm with the acoustic guitar, but his jokes are vile and hilarious. It's got a raw and unique feel to it because the Henry Phillips is just playing off-the-cuff...definitely worth a listen if you haven't heard it before.
3 DoubleGunns 2014-07-12
Norm MacDonald: Me Doing Stand Up
3 [deleted] 2014-07-12
Here are a few that have stood the test of time for me:
Brian Regan - I Walked on the Moon
Patrice O'Neal - Elephant in the Room (pretty much all his material stands up, actually)
Andrew Dice Clay - The Day the Laughter Died
Colin Quinn - Long Story Short
Doug Stanhope - No Refunds
Maria Bamford - How to Win (not on YouTube)
Maria Bamford - Ask me About my New God ( suicide bit )
Richard Pryor - That Nigger's Crazy
Hannibal Buress - Animal Furnace ( bomb water bit )
Bill Burr - Let It Go ( grocery store bit )
I've also seen most of these people live (except Pryor), and Stanhope pretty much blows everyone else away. If you get a chance to see him, don't pass it up. He gives an amazing performance. I think he did like 2 hours and 10 minutes when I saw him and he was high-energy hilarious the entire time.
3 MurshaqBack 2014-07-12
Maria Bamford is so underrated, I'm so glad someone mentioned her.
2 devilsadvocate33 2014-07-12
Not one Attell mention?
"Captain Miserable" wasn't his best work, but it still beats the holy fuck outta 95% of any other hour of stand-up.
"Road Work" was great, as was "Your Mouth's Not Pregnant", and his early stuff is the greatest stand-up work of all-time.
Yous cunts oughta be ashamed of yourselves.
2 BoardroomBimmy 2014-07-12
A tie between Skanks for the Memories and the first major Loius CK special. Whichever one had the "bag of dicks" line. Jesus, that whole thing floored me.
2 RzK 2014-07-12
This is a tough choice... Loved Alcoholocaust by Jim Jefferies, Love Louis CK's stuff. For non-edgy comedians I'd say John Mulaney New in Town, fuck you.. he makes me laugh.
2 NoremacMartin 2014-07-12
First off, Chewed Up is better than Hilarious.
Secondly, I love Eddie Murphy. He's one of my favourite comedians, and he's one of my favoruite comedic actors, but RAW doesn't stand the test of time. Almost all of the humor is about pop culture and society at the time. It's not very funny to watch now.
My favourite hour of comedy is Captain Miserable by Dave Attell.
I also highly recommend Road Work by Dave Attell which came out a few months ago. It's a fairly unique special.
2 NoremacMartin 2014-07-12
He's not my favourite, but he's a comedian who is very underrated IMO.
Daniel Tosh doesn't get the credit he deserves. He's one of the best comedians alive. Happy Thoughts, and Completely Serious are amazing specials.

BTW, I checked the 39 posts for one mention of Pryor...zilch. Lots of people said Bruce's stuff aged horribly. We should probably start saying the same thing about Pryor at some point.
1 BumbiBestie 2014-07-12
Older classics:
Eddie Murphy - Delirious
Eddie Murphy - Raw
Richard Pryor - Live in Concert
Richard Pryor - Live on the Sunset Strip
Andrew Dice Clay - The Diceman Cometh
Rodney Dangerfield - I Can't Take it No More
Mitch Hedberg - Comedy Central Presents
1 Hahrrgis 2014-07-12
This is going to sound really, really cliched...
Dave Chappelle's "Killing Them Softly"
I've seen it a million times and it always makes me laugh.

Moran is seriously underrated.

Patton Oswalt's 222 album is longer than an hour, however it's easily my favorite standup session of all time
listen to the Robert Evans bit or the Carvel ice cream bit if you would care to check out some of the highlights
1 catclops13 2014-07-12
Bill Burr - Let It Go Patton Oswalt - Werewolves & Lollipops George Carlin - It's Bad For Ya (not his best, but it's post-2000 and still brilliant) Mitch Hedberg - Mitch All Together Norm Macdonald - Me Doing Standup Doug Stanhope - Beer Hall Putsch AND No Refunds

I like absurd, meta-/anti-comedy so either one of Bo Burnham's specials. Not ashamed to say it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejc5zic4q2A
Doug Stanhope's "Burning the Bridge to Nowhere" bootleg is very good too (the one recorded in England). The professionally recorded one in Oslo fell flat. I prefer rough bootlegs of his shows, done from the audience.
