If we learned anything, its that satellite radio is over.

Satellite radio. The savior of free from the FCC uncensored commercial free content.

XM in the beginning was a shining light. jocks finally had freedom from years of being held back. little to no commercials. even the music channels were interesting with large catalogs with content that was very refreshing from terrestrial radio.

This seemed to all to downhill after the Sirius buyout. the music channels are the equivalent of the same old tiring terrestrial radio stations. A big change from xm's programming.

o&a and stern talked about management and the FCC constantly. they finally were freed but it didn't last long as we started hearing the same gripes.

The whole premise of satellite radio today is basically dead.

This leads us into the next platform again with again zero restrictions and no way to be silenced.

Agree or not. The next 6 months will be interesting.

It is an outdated thing. Cars are adopting USB ports and Internet connectivity. So no one really needs satellite radio. SiriusXM has to know this.

Exactly. All cars in the next few years will have an IP address.

IP address, whadda ya not get to tha bathroom fast enough?!

PECKAHS

Ya IP address, like he's the president of toiletville or sumpthin, double guns bitch

I'm not a huge fan of the chip-style comments. But /u/shmoeyg sure hit that one out of the park. Now /u/ig0tworms you should have just said "double-guns cawksukka", upvoted, and moved on.

Well Im not a huge fan of xNAMEx usernames, xBrianSmithx, but I have to say you've been wooshed. Chip is suppose to bomb, kill the moment, go one step too far. Obviously I have achieved that with the downvotes. So I ask that you kindly eat my ass.

Does it have to be kindly? Can it be done begrudgingly?

Just pucker up bub, I'm getting ancy

I respectfully decline to acquiesce to your request.

You do understand that the car still gets all of its connectivity from a smartphone, right?

We just bought a new Jeep. The salesperson while describing their uConnect entertainment system said "it comes with a year of satellite radio for free, but you don't need to renew it after that because you can stream Bluetooth from your phone and we have Pandora built in".

The only advantage they had left was pre-installed cars and now that's essentially over.

I don't understand the valuation of their share price. I would never invest. Old company, old thinking, now even worse because they're getting rid of their only possible differentiator: talent.

I don't understand the valuation either—I just read the comment section on that Motley Fool article, and the general consensus was that "Sirius could just find any other dumb shock jock and plug them in."

Holy fuck, everything that's wrong with Wall Street: all these queebs want is data and proof before putting up their excess wealth, when there's a mass of evidence illustrating why O&A are different than any other show.

But sure, Sirius could just hire Preston & Steve—there's a huge library of clips on youtube to show they're just as talented.

Oh…that's right.

Yup, I just canceled a couple days ago and thought exactly that.

Cable tv and radio are over. It's all about Rokus or whatever streaming box you have. I can't beleive the amount of time I wasted flipping channels, watching commercials (Viacom channels now only put 3 30 minute shows in a 2 hour block, and stretch them out with more ads), etc.

Now, I turn on what I want to watch when I'm working (I work from home) and I can't believe how many episodes I can watch in the same span of 2 hours (almost 6). No dick grow ads, no take this medicine that will kill you in 27 ways due to side effects, no Native Americans trying to get me to pay 1000% interest, none of it.

And the FCC doesn't control the content either

Cable TV is far from being over. There are still huge amounts of people who don't have access to anything faster than dial-up. There are people (mostly over 50) that don't even own computers. Cable TV is not going anywhere.

Satellite radio is definitely on the way out, though. That's nowhere near as ubiquitous as cable TV.

It did go downhill with the Sirius buyout. Mel Karmazin SAID in an interview he was bringing all of his ideas from terrestrial (that ruined it) to satellite. That meant as much advertising as possible, corporate playlists, selling channels to Metallica or AC/DC and playing the same 20 songs over and over, cutting channels with small but dedicated followers (punk channel? Where did it go? Hello?), radio edit songs, and 100%, 24.7 asslicking Howard Stern.

Sirius is going to be the Muzak of the 2000's. You'll hear it in stores, hotels, restaurants, but nobody will subscribe.

The new platform is here, it's been here. It's called podcasting. Sirius blew it with their streaming app already, unless they focus on a decent online platform, that works, and isn't expensive, they're dead. The only problem is it will be a slow, lingering death. Once howard is gone, they have no exclusive content that anyone gives a fuck about. All that money, to Eminem, Martha, and others, and maybe an hour of unique programming from it.

Oh well!

Mel kills another industry. Way to go, Mel.

Yes, it's toast. I can't imagine how anyone could trust SXM to not stab them in the back enough to work there any longer.

If I was Ron I'd be calling in my markers about now.

In 5 years SiriusXM will be in bankruptcy

O&A always win in the end

Having a big office in Manhattan where guests can go and knock out 4 or 5 interviews in one shot is the only advantage I can think of that Sirius has, and that still amounts to jack shit. When Jim Norton is out in LA he manages to accomplish the same thing on podcasts. Live, daily talk shows were an advantage before axing ant, leaving only Stern who seems more interested in TV.

That's a pretty big advantage, though, and that door swings both ways; it increases the chances for great radio having all these celebs coming and going through the building. You might get an unlikely pairing, or a surprise guest, and there's real value in that.

And you just can't get that vibe when it's just one guy grinding it out in his garage, and I for one will miss that.

Where else but on corporate radio are you gonna get a half-terrified, half-pretending to roll with it Milla Jojojojojovich watching Dice's (fucking incredible) Michael Madsen impression?

Nowheres, that's where.

I'm over here now, hah?

Gooooooo-gooo-goo-gooo-goooo-goo-goooo!!!

The internet is the bastion of freedom now, not satellite. Times are a changin.

Not if Comcast gets its way.

Kinda funny that the billions spent on broadcasting via satellite and the billions involved with that has been replaced, at least in cars, by an auxillary input.

Great forward thinking Sirius and XM and SiriusXM.

Look at the longterm stock trend -- satellite radio is not necessary anymore. They'll be done within the decade.

In five years, internet radio will be the death knell for satellite radio. When the technology catches up, you will get the originality and freedom you saw with the original XM. Possibly even more raw, actually. Because non-professionals will enter the arena. It's already started happening. There are a lot of internet stations out there right now with actual full service studios. The only problem is, the technology to pick up the internet streams in cars is not fully there yet. In 5 years, it will be.

I enjoy Howard too but I only get to hear him I feel less than 10 times a month. His shows have been pretty lackluster I admit, only thing keeping it afloat are the celebrities he's been bringing in lately, and the fact ive been listening for way too long. but without that 5th person in studio, the show has been getting "boringer and boringer".

I've been really into O&A lately, but I don't like this FCC type shit happening to Anthony. I don't like how all the other radio guys are not giving them their support, not even for Anthony himself, but for what's happening to him.

Looking like podcasts, YouTube, and now Netflix (they should start a radio/podcast type thing) are the future. Once the big guys start moving over, they will start big able to demand more money and maybe one day as much as they would on these now defunct mediums. Satellite radio still has much to offer, we need a new company to try though, Siriusxm is failing hard right now.

FCC?

I still blame Sirius. They were always a more stuffy, New York old-school Corporate kind of company vs the more renegade XM. Mel Karmazin, for chrissakes!

Podcasting / internet in the car is interesting, but there's something to be said about true broadcast when it comes to reaching an audience, and XM had a chance. Sirius screwed that badly.

I knew it was over when I saw Oprah's mug plastered all over the website. I dunno, being a subscriber since '01 and even having paid for "The Virus", I don't think we'll get anything like the early XM days again..

It's been over for a long time.

SiriusXM is literally the worst "tech/media" company in history. They have no vision, using their product is a hassle (read: the shitty app), and simply don't understand the consumer.

It's also a 20 billion dollar corporation that's show continued growth and subscribership and has contracts with almost every major auto maker out there for the foreseeable future. But your right it's a doomed corporation that won't last because Anthony cumia got fired. Don't get me wrong I hate the decision but some of you are dumb. The average person doesn't even know about him or subscribe to sxm for Opie and Anthony. Just because you can't afford sxm on your shitty hourly wage job doesn't mean most people can't or that sxm is in danger. Sxm has also started to show interest in buying companies like Pandora and other in car companies. They're definitely looking to grow and know where the future is headed. Now let me just say fuck sxm.

If they buy Pandora, they will destroy it.

You mean possibly actually help it turn a profit since it's yet to do such a thing? Maybe.

If they can't on their own, the pinheads at Liberty aren't either. All they're gonna do is slap commercials on everything.

But you keep making cunty remarks.

You mean slap ads on Pandora which already has tons of ads on it and even visual ads? Yeah okay. Unless you're a monthly subscriber Pandoras already moved in that direction.

Maybe so, but $4 a month is far more appealing than $18 a month for SXM, and subscription Pandora accounts don't have commercials, SXM accounts still do.

I'd say that's about to get a ding put in it since something like 9 car makers are debuting cars this year with an Android controlled receiver that can stream Google Play, Pandora, I Heart Radio, etc. Give it a few years to trickle down to aftermarket stereos, and people will soon ask themselves why they are paying monthly for a subscription that uses equipment they have to install in the car in addition to the stereo (aftermarket-wise) instead of just attaching their phone. Sirius is nice in a rental car, but I've found myself using it less and less in the home and car with all the new options I have in the last few years. Sirius is not one to move quickly with new technology.

It never seemed worth it to me to subscribe. It's always seemed outdated like some sort of technological stop-gap. Inevitably, yes.... Inevitably it will be phased out. Smart phones and Bluetooth are going to kill it. Why on earth would I subscribe to a paid radio service, when with the tiniest bit of internet savvy I have a custom catalog bigger than anything they can offer? How is that going to work out for them in the future?

I wouldn't say it's dead - but its future doesn't look bright.

It was a nice stop-gap for the few years it took to get portable devices, USB ports and internet connectivity in cars. All of those free choices (plus a whole free offering by terrestrial radio) will force satellite to adapt or die.

Let's face it - the one cool thing it had going for it was that you had artistic freedom to say and do what you wanted. Now, that appears to be over.

Satellite radio is the Ipod/MP3 player for 2008-2016. It ruled when it first came out, and held a lot of promise. All the while, it only can preform 1 single fucking task; it does a wonderful job at doing it's single task, however people will crave a device or system that does a multitude of tasks for us. The second that Google sticks a fucking tablet in the dash of a new car is the day that SiriusXM, becomes free just like regular radio. People will stream a single PodCast for a nice drive into work, they will queue up a favorite comedy bit for laughs in the car with their s/o, or if they want to hear music, like me they will plug in a phone, because I for one have more music and more variety than any of these other platforms, on the thing in my fucking pocket all day.

Miss ya

Love ya

This is why I canceled the first time they got suspended. Never looked back and went to podcasting.

Everyone seems to be forgetting about Jason Ellis and his EXTREME show. He is the saving grace of satellite.

He can air himself getting kicked in the balls for 4 hours

FUUUUUUUUUUCK that douche. I would love Anthony's attacker to rip his balls off.

Hi Im sarcasm, I dont think we've ever met.

wooooosh

Satellite radio didn't last for shit. Im just enjoying the golden age of podcast/free internet talk radio while I can. Cause Im sure sooner or later, that will get all fucked up & compromised too.

When did it ever begin?

The advantage it has is the convenience of having everything in one place. Now that I'm canceling I will need to get the MLB app and others to get what I had with my subscription. The other advantage is data, I don't need to worry about my data plan when listening to XM in my car. That being said I'll be fine without it.

On the tech side I've only had two radios since I signed with XM at the beginning of the OnA. SXMs lack of innovation is apparent when there is no need to get new technology.

When O&A were on various summer breaks, I found the Riotcast podcasts - Rich Vos, Bawby's.. and Nicks. I still have Burr, comedy on various platforms, and other Podcasts to listen to.. because of that, I've come to realize that I personally only need Sat Radio for sports talk/live news.

However, if I can get that on my phone (damn data fees)..I'd be golden.

If i can figure out a way around the data fee issue with Verizon.. i could go without sat.

I am in the process of ripping out my car stereo and just replacing it with an audio jack. That is what all cars should just come with. Then you play whatever you want.

The music channels are shit, too.

Ralphie May can save it!

He pulled his bits from sxm in support of ant. Don't be so quick to shit on the guy.

I wasn't trying to be shitty. Just have a funny retort to the topic.

You failed.

LOL made me laugh like Ant's retort to Jimmy's Adorable Huggable Boy Disorder "You're cured"

Sirus/XM is not dead... it's just continuing it's move to take over the giant market that Muzak had. The individual consumer is not the target market.

Yep, the only true freedom is podcasts now and with Carolla being sued by patent trolls, even that's on the verge of extinction. Slowly but surely our freedoms are being chipped(what's that) away. First by the government, now by corporations.

It's always been a stupid 80's technology.

Exactly. All cars in the next few years will have an IP address.
