When he says it on the show, it's clear he's talking about the criminal element within the black community. If he ever goes over the top, he says it in a comical shouting voice, and Opie/Jimmy laugh and say something to deflect/clarify. When he went on Twitter, it just looked to outsiders like he was talking about all black people when he said things like "they aren't people". If I'd never heard of him, I'd certainly read the tweets and find it strange that such an outspoken racist has a high profile radio job.

I forget who posted this theory but it's a good one - at some point in his rant he called her a prostitute, which might be considered libelous, and she might be suing over it. Media companies take libel really seriously, so maybe they got scared from that. That might also explain why he deleted so many tweets from this year.
