conspiracy theory time...

If this was planned it could end up being genius...

Think about it.

Opie and Anthony realize that their contracts are up and they don't really have any leverage. -They can't go back to free radio and the show has become a little stale: They hatch a plan to get fired by refusing to apologize(setting up for it with the apology clock bit), thus firing up the rapid fanbase to support them in their next venture as anthony is fired for refusing to apologize.

Their next venture: A paid podcast.

Say they have a monthly podcast that charges 20$/month(I don't have sirius but I figure that's around what it costs)

If they can get 100k fans to pay for their service that is 24 million all in operating budget. Since the fanbase is fired up, some might decide to actually pay instead of downloading or listening on youtube. I really have no idea on their listeners but 100k listeners doesn't seem that far-fetched(based off anthony's twitter feed, because I'm going assume a good chunk of them are listeners)

I believe when they got fired from free radio while they were working at sirius xm: howie said the company was paying them 3 million bucks so Ant/Opie each were taking home 1.5 million. Seems reasonable to me as their last megadeal was 10 million/year(5 million each) but that was different times before radio was a dying medium.

I don't necessary believe this to be the case, but if it is: BRILLIANT

EDIT: I think I might have inflated the numbers a little bit too much. But say its 10 bucks a month for 50k listeners that is still 6 million operating budget, throw in some ads and O and A are still making decent scratch(1.5 each) while keeping the staff(1) and paying jimmy(500k). From my understanding these podcasts are extremely cheap to produce.

Black people ruin everything

Not that far fetched, didn't they intentionally get fired from WAAF because they were already in contract negotiations with WNEW?

Yeah that's how I got the idea. They said it was on purpose(which could be true or false, who really fucking knows).

Alright-I gotta stop responding to every comment on my own stupid thread.

I would think if the story were true one of the vulture news sites would have found and interviewed the "pig faced cunt" whatever the fuck he called her.

I don't think this is true, but I do think Opie will in time assert that this was the plan all along.

True. I said I don't necessary believe it because its almost too genius: My whole point is basically they could get complete control and still make similar money. So end result they are in a better place and have more control so it could work out in their favor after all.

It's unlikely they'd do that and something so elaborate, especially if they were banking on Sirius firing him.

However, I just listened to their last show, July 1st, and there was an odd moment when Ant took out his camera in the studio. They discussed the legality of taking pics in public, and I'll be damned if I didn't consider the conspiracy thing.

Also, I didn't hear it, but I read someone on this sub saying Opie closed the show with "I think this might have been our last show."

A conspiracy makes no sense, and it works be just so elaborate. But it was weird listening to that show after what happened today.

But consider this:

His behaviour which caused the firing hasn't really changed, so normally it would rule out a conspiracy. But what if ... and believe me air quotes what if ... he knew that a racist rant would get cause public outrage and get him fired and force Sirius to pay the remaining contract. So every year for the past 10 years he's been going on racist rants trying to get fired and Sirius just never noticed until now.

You're right. It's very, very unlikely. But if this was deliberate: fucking brilliant. Especially since this proves their frequent point about our predictably PC and knee jerk culture.

Lol at people paying $15 to $20 a month for a podcast. I wouldn't pay $8 a month for the entire Sirius platform. You're seriously giving their fans way too much credit. The hardcore fans willing to do this are a small minority.

I wouldn't pay 8 dollars a month for sirius because of its shit fuck app and all of the free alternatives, as well as the fact that O&A are free like all over the place within minutes of the show ending. But I would gladly pay $5 a month or more just for O&A, depending of course on how they are running shit. If I can listen live as well as download the show within a reasonable amount of time of it ending, and have access to all previous shows, hell yes I would pay.

You're probably right. People do not pay for podcasts (except maybe for archives). It would have to be ad-supported, but others have shown this works. Add in road shows (where the money really goes to the artists — recall how bands support themselves almost entirely from touring), and they can support the operation. Maybe not to the tune that SXM was paying them, but the tradeoff for them is freedom of expression in exchange for less money.

You wouldn't, either would I. But clearly people are paying for Sirius just for opie and anthony. Hence them getting paid good money to put on a show and continuing to sign contract extensions. Sirius knows how many people listen to the show, they aren't doing a charity service.

You're the 7 millionth person to post this.

It's a QUAAAANSPIRACY!

... spiracy

Not sure if you're a R&F fan but there was a lot of conspiracy talk about the move over to rawdog. Now we have a regular dose of Jeffrey Gurian, which, if you don't know, is a very very bad thing.

I still don't know what to make of all this

I still don't know what to make of all this

No, you're definitely on to something with your thoughts.

Gurian definitely is a very, very bad thing.

Honestly, I think that him taking a pic of a random lady and making up the whole assault story is more believable than him taking a pic of a black lady to make fun of her.

100k listeners paying $20 p/m for a non-live taped show. Might be hard to do.

i will never pay$20 a month for a podcast...

This is true but you can tinker with the formula $15/month for 50k listeners: You still have 9 million operating budget: Ppl say these podcasts are very cheap to produce, O and A can still walk away with 2 million a piece, with nice leftovers for Lil' jimmy and the staff they bring with them.

Yeah true. just need to see what Op & Jim do.

$5/mo for membership and access to the live show. Every Monday the show is free (to gain exposure). Every show over a month old is made available. I think that's a fair and progressive plan.

I think you are vastly overestimating the amount of people who would sign up. I think they would be extremely lucky to get 10,000.

You're inflating the numbers but you're not totally off. Podcasts like adam carolla's net in like 4 mil a year and he advertises minimally I believe.

Yeah your probably right. But even with 50k listeners paying 10 bucks each. Thats 6 million bucks operating budget.

O and A still get 1.5 mill each. 500k for jimmy, and the staff can be covered by I estimate 1 million with letting some people go travis- maybe 80-100k sam-80-100k sal-50k erock-150k troy-60 to 80k kenny-no need for security at a podcast sure I'm missing a few and I'm pulling these numbers out my ass because I have no idea how much people on a radio show make, but I don't think its a lot. I just think its feasible(planned or not) they can switch to a pay+advertising model and It won't be that much of a hit to O and A and maybe even J.

Also I don't believe anything celebrity net worth says in terms of how much podcasts make. That website is pure shit. For example: Howie: even if they know how much he makes in salary they have no idea how he invests/spends his money. That is a huge factor to not account for.

Sam is a company man, he's not going anywhere, nor should he.

Sam within the last 18 months admitted to making less than $40,000 at Sirius. I don't know about Travis or erock, or even sam today. But that wasn't long ago.

Then Anthony would have pushed the "I'm not apologizing to those fuckos" idea more.

He dint do that tho

Was this patton oswalts plan?

Tuesdays show opie said " I think this is out last live broadcast, it's not a nice place to work "

this seems the most logical...and anyone else who is on sirrus that shares fans follows them to their new channel so they make even more

Yeah that's how I got the idea. They said it was on purpose(which could be true or false, who really fucking knows).
