So many theories on this thread, but I'm pretty sure it's what the heavy metal guys who he used to hang out with as a 'kid' gave him. O&A had the heavy guys as a guest long ago, NO IDEA which year or episode, sorry.
The title reminded me of the Just So series by Rudyard Kipling.
IN the sea, once upon a time, O my Best Beloved, there was Erock, and he ate fishes. He ate the starfish and the garfish, and the crab and the dab, and the plaice and the dace, and the skate and his mate, and the mackereel and the pickereel, and the really truly twirly-whirly eel. All the fishes he could find in all the sea he ate with his mouth--so! Till at last there was only one small fish left in all the sea, and he was a small 'Stute Fish, and he swam a little behind Erock's right ear, so as to be out of harm's way. Then Erock stood up on his tail and said, 'I'm hungry.' And the small 'Stute Fish said in a small 'stute voice, 'Noble and generous Cetacean, have you ever tasted the garlic butter saaw?'
No, I'm afraid I don't know why they call him Erock
Stevey Knight just posted a classic segment where they talk about this. He said it was a nickname one of his cousins called him as a kid. It came up at the office one day and someone started calling him it, and it spread from there. It's toward the end: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYNIDKepSqA

It's the first letter of his actual name, followed by his IQ.

Gpie doesn't sound as good as Opie so that's probably why he changed it.

Got changed randomly one day in mid 2005. They didn't like calling him Sex Bagel so used Hawk for a while.
Then one day Anthony mentioned that the interns had been calling him Erock and they started calling him that on air

This seems the most likely answer mostly because it's the most boring. Thanks for crushing my dreams

I download and listened to all of their XM shows starting out at 2004 and was wondering where Erock came from too.
It literally was just a throwaway comment by Anthony "In comes Hawk, or Erock as the guys in the booth call him".
And all I can remember is that it was mid-2005 before he won the $100,000 and got left at Giant's Stadium by Opie.

Yeah, an intern found out one of his cousins called him Erock as a kid, and started calling him that
2 jespie 2014-06-24
I thought some radio host gave it to him when he was interning in Florida.
EDIT: I'm totally wrong, he was given the name 'Sex Bagel' there.

The state he was born in, right? Where he's from?
