The last time I checked Opie's twitter he had around 180k followers, now he has over 300k. What happened?

There is no reason for him to gained 100k follows in a couple of months. Did someone ironically buy him follows like people did with Bobo and Lady Di?

Opie unironically bought followers for himself.

ISIS is hoping to get their hands on Opie's bra-bombs.

Someone suggested most of those followers are fake. There are websites that do some crude analysis which samples your followers and determines the % of followers that are real and fake.
twitter audit says 56% of his followers are fake (audit ran 2 years ago. To run audit on current status it costs $3.99, and I aint paying for such nonsense)
http://fakers.statuspeople.com/ says 69% of his followers are fake.
This is all to be taken with a grain of salt, though. I ran these audits on my twitter account and it stated some people, who I know positively know are real (family), but listed them as fake.
Knowing his obsession with social media and with his content going viral and how cheap it is to buy fake followers, I wouldn't be shocked if he did pay for them.

The algorithms used to determine followers being fake or not is sort of retarded. They take the account's followers and compare them to their followed accounts and retweets/tweets, then if the ratio is fucked up(as though someone followed a shitload of accounts without ever actually saying anything or retweeting/favoriting shit) it declares them "fake".

He claims that whoever bought Lady Di and Bobo followers must have bought some for him too. Not Anthony or Jim, just him. (I call bullshit)

You know the people that bought Di and Bobo followers are this subreddit, don't you?
I bet you thought that was actually Opie sending people in this sub private messages, too.

Some Time passed....more people learned about the Opester....so more people inevitably fell head over heels for the Opester........and more time will pass....the cycle will inevitably repeat itself , the never ending cycle of love .

I remember maybe 2 years ago before buying followers was so easy none of them cracked 100k. I doubt they have 3x as many followers in that time frame

I've always assumed that Opie's following is due in some part to casual listeners thinking that Opie radio is an O&A twitter page rather than just Opie's.

50 bucks a follower?

He definitely bought them. He should buy more.

They all funneled onto his follower list sliding down his muscular V.

Here I was thinking Ant lost 150k due to endless race debates with that Agatha moron but Opie buying followers seems more plausible.

Opie does a LOT of retweeting, content production, and general Twitter mingling. A lot of his followers know his videos and/or know him on Twitter without actually knowing much about the show itself.

I'm not saying there aren't fake followers, I'm just saying that he's picked up folks from his videos that might not actually be regular listeners.
