Yea could really give two shits less. Also the team has been around for 80 years, why is this an issue as of late? I was never big on this discussion but were native Americans the big backers to change the name or just us dumb white people?
Polls show that ~90% natives don't find it a slur. It's now a bigger issue because whities in the suburbs can unrelentingly vent their guilt on the internet.
There's the Seattle I know: Inserting themselves into a situation that's none of their business, and then grandstanding about how progressive they are for all to see...
I'm sure there are some people offended by the "Redskins" name, but I've never personally met any of them. Then again I've only been living in the 2nd most populated native american state for about 25 years(Oklahoma).
Silly little things like this don't matter...
Hawthorne, vice president of the Navajo Code Talkers Association, said the group's trip was paid for by the Redskins. The four men met briefly with team owner Dan Snyder but did not discuss the name, Hawthorne said.
Still, he said he would endorse the name if asked, and the televised appearance in which three of the Indians wore Redskins jackets spoke for itself.
"We didn't have that in mind but that is undoubtedly what we did do," Hawthorne said when asked if he was intending to send a statement with the appearance. "My opinion is that's a name that not only the team should keep, but that's a name that's American."
So did Hawthorne go on to call Snyder a Masculine and Beautiful man before, or after he blew him on the stage and agreed to take it anally, but only if he paid extra?
So just because the trip was paid by the Redskins he sold out? That trip must have been amazing, to go back home to deal with your family, your neighbors, your friends unless... that's how he actually felt.
Let's go with him selling out(since you believe that)... if that simple trip trip is enough for him to sell out, then it's probably not that big of a deal to him anyways.
So then no more Minnesota Vikings. It implies Scandinavians are murderous barbarians. Shit! I forgot. It's okay to hate white people. Sorry, I apologize for everything. Am I safe now? Can I keep my job that required a ton of hard work and study?
Most Americans, especially the ones out East, don't no shit about Indians, I live not far from a rez, went to school with a lot of them, some are nice, friendly, but most are morbidly obese, rude, lazy alcoholics. If you ever drive through the rez, it's like a fucking third world country. That being said, I'd take living next to fifty chugs than one black American any day of the week.
Can't really begrudge them for making that decision. The only way it'd be ok (as far as I'm concerned) for the Redskins to change their name is if the market decides it needs to change by refusing to use the word.

Well, since the redskins may be losing their protected status by the patent and trademark office, that may not be too long off.
Technically, they are actually being less meddled by the federal government now that their brand isn't controlled by them. They can slap their logo and brand on anything now and sell it without needing approval by some government organization, them and everyone else.
When will we have to rename Oklahoma... The state's name is derived from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning "red people". The state that has the 2nd most native americans in it it and also has 6 high schools using the name "Redskins", 18 high schools using "Indians" and 5 schools utilizing the word "Chiefs". This should be fun to watch.
Redskins isn't being used as a racial slur either, what's your point? I'm only in my 40s, been living with native americans around me for about a quarter of a decade and nobody I personally know has ever said anything bad about the Redskins. I do see native americans wearing Redskins gear, but not saying anything against the franchise.
I'm sure if more people knew what Oklahoma actually ment people would come out and say it's a slur.

Does anybody else not give a shit about this tiresome debate over the name of a sports team?

Next time have the courtesy to post a trigger warning before using language like that!

That doesn't bother me though. As long as they aren't being forced by law or league enforcement to change their name it's ok.
