I think this is what killed it, as I too thought it was a good show. All of the original FX shows that have been moved to FXX have died. It suffered a massive ratings loss in the move, I think mostly due to the fact that FXX is still treated as a sports channel (it was Fox Soccer) on most cable packages.
I was checking ratings for the second season last night and saw that one episode had just barely more than 100,000 viewers. I'd love to see him take the show (Legit or a new one) to an uncensored channel or Netflix. Seeing his raunchier stories done in a cable-friendly way was rough at times knowing what he really should be saying/doing. The 'vibrating egg up the ass' story would be amazing for a show, but could never go on TV.
This killed it for me too. I watched every episode of the first season, but once it moved to FXX I couldn't be bothered to switch my DVR over. I wish I had a better excuse, but that's what happened.
Season 1 was mostly a portrayal of his best standup bits/stories, which, while good, took away some of the humor for people who had already heard the material before and knew the punchlines.
The second season he had to come up with original story lines, which he did really well in my opinion. The characters became more in-depth, and their actions tended to carry over into later episodes. It was definitely a more mature and well-executed show in the second season which makes it even more unfortunate given where it was leading as the season closed out.
I actually really did like it. I'm a fans of Jim Jefferies to begin with, and I thought the comedy was good and the overall tone of the show was very fun and as stupid as it sounds wholesome.
The whole storyline of Steve having his daughter taken away in season one was really deep. And the hoarding, and really everything to do with Billy.
I thought it was really good, too bad.
But I will say, the show is much better without any commercial interruptions.
I actually liked it better than Louie, but I think the problem was a lack of advertisement for it. Hell, they didn't even have youtube trailers for the damn thing. Any media of Legit that was put up on the internet was instantly shut down or taken down. It worked severely against them. Also, it was on FXX.
Jim's comedy translated better to Legit than Louis CK's comedy translates to Louie. Legit was more of a straight up comedy show rather than a "artsy" comedy like Louie is.
The problem with that though, was it still didn't stand a chance against other straight up comedy shows like Always Sunny.
Archer is shit. Would have rather had that show trashed than Legit.
I disagree with almost everything you said. The one saving grace in your comment was that "Archer is shit". I agree with this. It used to be funny but now it's just doing the same old shit over until it's annoying.
Loved it. Better than Louie if it wasn't for Pamela Adlon, tho she was better in Lucky Louie. Still, Love Jim. I saw Alcoholocaust live in Edinburgh, listened to every podcast he did, & will continue to follow him
Agreed, I was going to catch my friend up by watching the ones so far with her, and when I thought about the episodes, I was like eh... I like the show in general, but most of last season, and this season so far have been basically forgettable. The only one I did like this season was the one where he did the standup for the rich party.
It lost the plot for me last season. I loved the first one, and then it started to go downhill, IMO.
edit: Same with Legit. Loved the first season. This season has been just "okay" so far. Although the one where Steve royally fucked up the weekend with his daughter was a nice return to form...
It's a very cheap show to make and requires very little work on FX's part. While low ratings are bad, it's not a deal breaker. If it brings in more money than it costs to make, then it has a chance.
hmm, compared to It's always sunny (staying around a consistant 1mil every ep for the past 2 seasons, even on FXX) Louie ain't doing as consistent ratings
Legit has been getting about 2/3 the viewers of Louie
Wilfred started out stronger but now has ratings similar to Legit, but it's getting a final season on FXX
I guess FXX is where FX sends shows to finish up and die
Want to hear something really depressing? "Saint George" that show with George Lopez is doing double Legit's numbers
I thought the same for Louie too. I only really liked a few episodes from the first couple seasons, but so far this season has been really good.
It seems that Legit and Louie suffered the same issues - poor timing and delivery of lines/dialogue, bad editing etc. and eventually it gets better. For example that first scene in episode one of Legit when he is talking to a clerk through a partition. Fuck that editing and delivery was bad, same exact type of shit with Louie, but Louie is getting a pass. I wish Louie would just concentrate on writing/acting and have someone else produce and direct. He is not half as good at directing as he/people pretend he is.
I liked the show, but they should've emphasized things more on jim than cordry and the always horrible dj quals. Louie said he didn't have a recurring cast outside the daughters cause he would have to write things for those characters every week rather than just making episodes on whatever he thought was funny. Legit could've benefited from that logic.
I didn't really like it. The acting was weak and the stories were just adaptations of his material that weren't done particularly well. I would just rather watch his standup.
One of my favorite current shows. Jim really handled some tricky topics with finesse and clever humor. I'll miss the show and possibilities of where it could have gone. I hope Rodney gets an acting gig somewhere.
I feel like every show that comedians did after Louie was just trying too hard to be Louie. Felt the same way about Maron. Both shows could have been better if they had tried to go for their own unique thing but trying to be Louie made them feel bland and unoriginal.
I loved it. I'm a filthy degenerate who also volunteers with people with disabilities (usually high so I'm more relaxed and goofy). The premise that you can be a piece of shit but still be nice to people who "good" members of society overlook daily, really hit home.
I think it's the kind of show that needs a little bit of breathing room, which is a shame because a third or fourth season could have really made it a show with a good atmosphere all of it's own.
It's expected quite honestly, it didn't have 'hit' factor unfortunately.
it was alright. Not as funny as his stand up.
It was a little too similar to Louie I think it would have been better if he played a non entertainer character who would have a lot of interaction with the public like a bartender or something.
yeah I love Jim, seeing him this weekend actually, but he does reuse stories in multiple places so once you know the joke already it kills some of the humor
That's too bad. I liked it and thought most of them were pretty solid. I had a hard time remembering where FX was for season one and am pretty sure my TV set does not get FXX, so had to get all of season 2 from usenet.
I wonder if it was a relief for Jim J. - I seem to remember him saying on O&A that he pretty much put all of his real life experience/inspiration into season 1 and was going to have a tougher time writing season 2 without that to lean on.
I'm bummed to see the show go. I would download episodes even though I have cable. Its just easier I can download it and watch it when, and wherever I want.
I watched the whole season on Netflix and thought it was great. Haven't seen any of the second but I'm kinda bummed that it's been canned. I laughed hysterically at the scene where Jim is jerking off the wheelchair guy on the webcam. I had to rewatch the woman exclaiming "STEVE!" a couple of times.
the first three episodes of season 1 were great, after that it generally was little above mediocre, with very trivial plotlines. always funny but nothing memorable. i respect his inflationary use of disabled people.
the second season is more involved with character development and still had a lot of funny moments, but again didn't really expand on those concepts. what unnerves me a lot personally, is him becoming a bullhorn for the anti-gun-lobby with it's ridiculous and self-serving arguments which he only repeats, but leaves out the point that the 2nd amendment is meant for the people to be able to defend themselves from a tyrannical government, which of course is the whole point.
all in all, it was better than having nothing, and of course better than most other stuff on TV, including ami schumer's clip show, but i see why i would get cancelled.
he lost true friend of the show status as soon as he got that show. Don't think he ever had a good appearance since. Just ringing up to whore his show.

I liked it a lot. I don't get fxx though so I haven't seen any of the 2nd season.

Fuck that FXX horseshit.

Yeah season 1 I watched on the FX site or tried to get it any legal way. But season 2 was FXX so I've been torrenting it.
Stupid media companies!

Thought it was great. At least Eric the Midget (actor) was able to get on. I know, I know, Stern....
3 kgt5003 2014-05-14
Howie played Eric's scene the other day on his show. Also, Jim was a much better actor than I'd have thought.

Hoo hoo Robin.
2 molloybe 2014-05-14
Which is kinda funny, considering the running joke is that every show he's on get cancelled.
That sucks though...one of the few shows I bother to watch. Moving shows to FXX seems to completely fuck them over.

I liked it, but already knew a lot of the stories from O&A. Unfortunately the move to a subscription only channel (FXX) killed it.
Sound familiar?

Louie is a fan of Robert Downey Sr. He also posted some of his early attempts at directing short films on youtube.
He's using the show as a platform sort of, for making interconnected short films. It's more that than a actual show.

I disagree with almost everything you said. The one saving grace in your comment was that "Archer is shit". I agree with this. It used to be funny but now it's just doing the same old shit over until it's annoying.

I do think Archers' first season is one of the funniest tv seasons of all time.
-1 LizardKingRumsfeld 2014-05-14
Well I just went from 'don't give a fuck about Archer' to 'gonna have to buy Archer season 1' just now while reading your comment.

Louie is next on the chopping block, look at the ratings:

Interesting. In my opinion this season of Louie has been horrifically bad. I used to be the show's #1 fan.

I love Louie, but I think he needs to emulate his pal Gerveis and only do two seasons. Most shows just can't go that long.
-5 pfg-sciple 2014-05-14
The entire show was horrifically bad. The only good parts were when Pamela Adlon was on the show (who is a very attractive old lady).
This show kept repeating the same idea over and over. Louie is great at playing awkward, but he sucks in terms of show writing.
4 Kneecaps 2014-05-14

It's a loss leader for FX i'm sure. Costs them money, brings them prestige and branding.
1 [deleted] 2014-05-14
Not sure what your point is. Looks pretty consistent, except for the end of the previous season.
1 MonsteRain 2014-05-14

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee also suffers from "trying to be Louie" syndrome. Right down to the stupid jazz music.
3 LoganGV 2014-05-14
I hate to see Jim Jefferies lose his gig but at least now he can come in-studio again instead of a call to promote Legit.
2 thebedshow 2014-05-14
It was pretty good, lots of better shows out right now though.
2 CowsAreCurious 2014-05-14
