As opposed to firing them (which would mean that they could use their extreme heat at the time to get even more popular using the offer in NYC that they had), they were kept on-contract but had their salary made static so that they effectively existed outside of the job. No matter what they had to ride out the contract, and their pay couldn't go up or down.
